Dear Bernie,
No need to call in Myth Busters. I grew up on a dairy farm and cows do get drunk when they eat apples. I've seen it with my own eyes many times. I also noticed that some cows imbibe more than others. It's a good thing that apples only ripen once a year.
apple trees from seed ?
Explain this. [Cows have two stomachs and the apples would ferment in one of the stomachs which would cause the cows to get drunk.]
Cows have four stomachs. What they eat goes into the first stomach, is regurgitated, & re-chewed. It is called chewing their cud. It then goes through the rest of the stomachs. It is not going to sit in a stomach & ferment.
Oh, by the way, deer also have 4 stomachs.
Is it possible that the apples have fallen on the ground and are already in the fermentation process before the cows eats it? That is what happens with the Marula fruit I mentioned earlier. However, that fruit ferments very quickly.
