Lily slide show 2009

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Snow flakes are falling occasionally today and all the lilies are safely hiding underground. I'm already looking forward to next year, aren't you? Here is a slide show I put together of last Summers blooms.

http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/slideshow/575716425haphsT

Many of the lilies were divided and moved last Fall and new ones planted, so I'm excited to see how they all look in their locations next Summer. Hope you all have a peaceful and happy holiday season.

very nice...Purple Reign and Champagne seem to be among your favorites.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Susan, That is one fabulous show. I saw 5 or 6 new ones that I must have. You did such a beautiful job raising and photographing these lovelies.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Susan,

What a lovely show! Thank you so much for putting that together and showing us. It brightened my dreary day.

Love that trellis. I would love to see you home when the lilies are in bloom, which must be a very extended period.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Nice showcase, Susan. :)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Very nicely done ;)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I love your slide show.
The gardens are sublime.
Purple Reign was offered on B&D lilies and I passed in hopes of finding it cheaper somewhere else.
By the time I was exhausted looking I went beck to B&D and it was removed.
Shoulda-woulda-coulda.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Susan,

I just watched every image. Just gorgeous. I really appreciated your multiple images of Champagne. I sort of took a flyer and bought some from Buggy. Your pictures assured me that I'd made the right choice.

It was like a breath of summer as we get our first accumulated snowfalloutside.

Thank you.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Champagne was one I just couldn't pass by without taking a photo. Some I notice, like Black Beauty, I never did get a decent photo of all summer.

ge, I read someplace that Purple Reign has had it's name changed to Hot Fudge, so you might want to look for it under that name. I added another one last Fall and divided the one that was there, so I should have a nice clump next year. It is fairly short and upward facing, so worked well near the sidewalk where people walking by can look down at it.

Now I'm working on a daylily slideshow and then will do an Iris one. The only thing blooming right now are the Amaryllis I have taken in to work. Here's LadyJane.

I just had to look again and noticed Samuers.
I just planted some with Lavander astilbes. Yours are something to strive for.

I just wanted to also say your lilies are beautiful! I sat and watched every one as well. Two years ago I looked for Purple Reign and could find none. When I looked at your slideshow I was off in search again. I only found one source, and have had no response. I checked all the possibilities of places listed at Dave's Garden as well. I also found that it may now be referred to as Hot Fudge. (To me Purple Reign is much more suiting and don't know why they would change to Hot Fudge.) I couldn't find any sources under Hot Fudge at all. What was really surprising to me is that according to a lily society website I was at, it was introduced in 1979 I believe (could have been 1989). I was quite amazed at that. I would have thought it would still be quite popular. Is it difficult to grow, or slow to increase?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

There are a couple nurseries in Canada that carry it. That's where mine came from.

The name Purple REIGN was not acceptable due to confusion with Purple RAIN which is a reddish lily. Here you can see that their descriptions are nearly identical

PURPLE REIGN
Parentage: 'Hot Fudge' x 'White Prince'
Hybridizer: H (1987), G (1989) & N (1990): J. Wadekamper I: Borbeleta Gardens, 1995.
Description: Inside white, with a large deep purple brushmark (paler around edges of brushmark and breaking into spots at base); outside white; nectaries lime green; pollen brown. Petals 90 x 30mm, not ruffled, not recurved. Lvs alternate, 70 x 20mm, dark green. Stems 1.0m, dark green, with 10-12 fls. Midseason. (Unacceptable name: identical pronunciation to 'Purple Rain'.)

HOT FUDGE
Parentage: Unnamed Wadekamper brushmark seedling x 'White Prince'
Hybridizer: H:1979, G:1982, N:1989 & Reg:1993: J.Wadekamper I: Borbeleta Gardens, 1989. Borbeleta Gardens cat., 1989.
Description: White throughout, with large, deep purple brushmarks and some spotting below them; throat green; nectaries green; pollen deep brown. Petals 90 x 30mm, margins slightly ruffled, slightly recurved. Lvs alternate, 90 x 25mm, dark green. Stems 0.8m, dark, with 8-10 fls. Midseason.

The name 'Hot Fudge' doesn't really seem fitting to me either, but it does figure in the parentage.

Thanks for that information Moby...and yes, a better understanding of the name. I was at two Canadian sites in my search, and while they had photos (listed as Purple Reign), neither listed any for sale. Perhaps I need to go back and do the Hot Fudge search again.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Very very very nice. :) It's 23 degrees here at the moment and it took the cold away and made me think of summer again. :) Thank you!

Same conditions here.
Slide show making sounds like a good idea.
I'll just do gardens instead of individual flowers. It will keep me out of the cookies.

Hyannis, MA(Zone 7a)

Susan, Again, your glorious slide show is inspiring, indeed! What a beautiful garden ! Bravo! Watching it through winter will get everyone through! :-)..........Thanks for sharing it.

Go back and put a space between 'are' and your link ~ that should work.

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Snowy, windy day so what else to do. . . . look at your slide show! Wonderful!!!!

Hyannis, MA(Zone 7a)

Ge1836 Thanks for sharing ..Yum! A treat for sure in December! Your garden is wonderful!! :-)

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Great job, Jo Ann!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Nice to enjoy on a very cold day.....12 degrees here now.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

This is the longest part of the winter.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

It does seem long. 7 degrees here. But the days are getting longer, and we have Jo Ann's love show. Thank you so much.

Donna

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thats cold.
Days are getting longer.

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

There some slide show beauties, for sure! Thank you.

7 degrees...hmmm, cool, but not cold. We're currently at a very dry, no wind minus 27. A beautiful New Year's Eve watching 2 hours of fireworks with friends, set off on a frozen lake with the full Blue Moon. It started very lightly snowing just after mid-night....And my New Year's tradition? Order lily bulbs and seeds for those longer days to come.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Yes, this is the longest, longest time of the year. The time to wait and hope....for longer days and warmer temperatures.
Chocolatemoose ...now that IS cold and leaves me nothing to complain about :) Sounds like you had a neat start to the New Year. As per usual, I was tired early and retired for the night before the new year struck. Woke up and sure enough it had begun without me ;)

I will add a link for my lilies here, it is an ongoing project and helps me keep things straight. Have added pages since the last time I posted it around here last winter. Hope you don't mind Susan, adding it to your beautiful slide show. I just know that I can use all the help I can get to get through the winter:

Happy New Year all! Enjoy!

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

Simply amazing...Thank you Tracey...

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

You are welcome. I should have noted that there are several pages I think I have 8 separate lily categories on the top, along with some seedlings and other favorite plants (peonies & iris). Sometimes people miss how many layers there are there.

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

I looked at them all...twice...What program/format did you use to create this? Is it a Mac program?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I used iWeb, a mac program. It was simple, pick out a background and drag and drop (what could be better?). It's an easy way for me to keep track of things. Each summer I actually have fun updating it now. The web space comes free with my .mac email account.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Its just beautiful. I especially liked some views with Lilies in their surroundings.
ie. with clematis

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

These slideshows are fabulous ! Due to my HORRIBLE rabbit problem, I did not plant a single lily this fall.I have given up, they win!!! Thank each of you as I really enjoyed every single picture. Lesley

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Trouble is that I am not that great at companion planting. My camera likes the close up pictures and doesn't have that great of a lens to take nice wide shots, even if I did organize my gardens nicely ;)

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Magnolialover, Your lilies are absolutely beautiful. What a collection!! Thank you for sharing them. You've sent me off in search of "Awesome".
