ORVG COFFEE HOUSE # 165 HAPPY THANKSGIVING !

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi Chele, he is such a pretty baby!! I know boys aren't supposed to be pretty, but until he gets a little older, he is PRETTY! I voted for him, and if we can vote more than once, I will go back and do it agin. Let me know.

Marcy, You are going to be lost without the DD there, seems you all have been running here and there.

I went out to the grocery this morning, and the winds are gusting up to 50 miles per hour. We had over 2 inches of rain last night and this morning. So it is squishy outside.

Gonna see about a wee nap before I do anything else.

hey gang
is this crazy wind or what ?
chickens are still holding down the coop and the Gh is still on the ground.
grocery
then volunteer at kids school and home for hot soup
eating chocolate and it s good but not for my tushy LOL oh well
not much else
just the laundry calling my name again'
Chelle he is a cute one that guy is of yours. I will vote too .
later

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Adorable! He has my vote as well!

Today was candy day...well, I should say fudge day. Made a batch of Double Decker and a batch of Mamie's Million $$. I sold a half # of each and it goes to California, so I ran down to the new cake decorating store and picked up a few 1/2 # boxes. I started chatting with the owner and she wants a box of the Mamie's. So that is boxed up and will go to her tomorrow. Then the box to CA and a box to the kids in Florida and the rest will be for celebrations close to home. Doubt very seriously if I'm making much on those boxes at $5.00 a box. 18 pieces fit in there nicely and it weighs in at 9 oz.

It certainly looks very wintery outside! The wind almost takes your breath away. I'm a bad mama, cause all my bird-feeders are empty and I'm not going out today to fill them!!!

YIKES!

UT OH!

yikes Ric good thing the bamboo is there to catch that swing

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

That's the position I found my chicken pen in today. Had to use a come along to get it back upright and then strapped it down. Was able to get all the chickens back in. PTL.

Brownstown, IN(Zone 5b)

Have any of you lost a post on here. I swear I posted yesterday and it is no where to be found, Maybe I forgot to send........
Stay warm. Tomorrow I am going to Cynthiana KY to see my sis. I haven't been down since July so hope we make it. She is pretty much housebound with her H and I miss the good times we used to have when she would come to Indiana once a month to stay with our folks.
Veronica

Waddy, KY

Mercy! I'm making a batch of salsa and the darned peppers and onions are making everybody sneeze and cough!

Wind blew pretty good here too. I guess it's a good thing all the trees have lost their leaves so we don't have to worry as much about the electric going out. We were laughing about not having to rake the rest of our leaves cause they should be in WVA by now but I think we must have gotten Kansas's leaves cause we still have some.

Been trying to get some sales material together to sell some of the calves as freezer beef. We put some on Craigs list. Got a few live inquiries and a few chain jerkers. The human race never ceases to amaze me.

Gall bladder surgery on tap for next Thursday. He doesn't do Thursday surgery until the afternoon so it wouldn't surprise me if I ended up staying overnight. Suits me. That cut 'em and sent 'em home stuff doesn't sit well with me.

Got another calf in the basement. He was a real popsicle having just been born this morning. At least it's the last one of this calving run. Now to get everybody bred back....

Bonnie, good to hear you were feeling better. Want to do my Christmas shopping now????

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Janet, you have to be kidding me!! Didn't I say I was done Christmas shopping? Tell you what, if you don't get it done before your surgery, give me your list and lots of money, and I will shop for you!!

Joyce, the candy sounds delicious, wish we were closer, then DH would be coming by your house every day to buy some.

cajun, yikes on the chicken coop. Glad you got that all resolved. We haven't had anything blow over except a wooden swing outside. That sucker is heavy so, guess we are lucky nothing else had gone a** over teakettle.

Ric, our swing is way heavier than that one, we had one like that, but finally the material gave out.

Sue, no chocolate is not good for the hips!! I might as well just stuff the candy in my hip pocket, cause that is where it is going to end up anyway!! Shhh, I am whispering, but the kids have stayed well, right? Something's up!! Naw, they will be sick on Christmas break.

Veronica, can't do it this time, but the next time you get to come down to Cynthiana, maybe we can hook up, I am about 50 miles away. We could do lunch or a cup of coffee and chat. So let me know.

Well the DH got home from Indiana about 4:00 this afternoon. He had gone to look for one of his hunting dogs that he let his nephew take, and he lost. No luck, but he did put ads in all the papers around. She has a collar with his name and telephone number on it. So hope that somebody calls and says that she needs a ride home. She is a shy dog, and I am thinking that she won't allow anybody close enough to her to even see the collar information.

He went by an Amish friends house and they had just killed hogs, and he bought 2 whole pork loins, each about 4 feet long, and 2 racks of ribs. We cut it up and froze it when he got home. He brought home some yummy home made bread, and went by the Amish candy shop and we have peanut brittle, white chocolate peanut, and chocolate covered peanut clusters. Oh, I gotta hide that. It is so good.

Well the winds are finally calming down. It has gotten lots colder, so wouldn't surprise me to see snow in the morning.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Cajun I'm glad everything turned out OK.
I'm betting there will be no eggs tomorrow... lol!

Janet Good Luck!
I'll tell you gall blader stories AFTER you're back and feeling great!

Veronica I loose posts all the time.
Enjoy yourself tomorrow!!! Be Safe!

Fresh Pork! What a deal Bonnie!
That swing may well be heavier than I posted.
I'll know tomorrow.... LOL!

We had a bit of a furnace scare early this evening.
Turns out it was a clogged pilot light tube... probably from all the line work they are doing around here.
So we are warm and toasty. Which is good as it's supposed to be 21° by sunrise......

The high wind warning has been lifted.... the Futon will be uprighted tomorrow.

If you want a treat Google Eva Cassidy then hit Video... listen and just be amazed.

Ric

Is it cold enough for everyone yet ?
Bonnie my FIL tells me wonderful stories of when he was a kid and his neighborhood would gather at his house during the fall and they slaughtered several hogs and he and his brother would cut fat and his mom would keep it in a jar. She also did a preservative method with the rendered fat and keeped meat in the jar with it . Wow the things she used to do . She cooked everything with that lard.
Funny how we think its a bad thing and we don't second guess margarine ? or todays butter . ?
Austin is sick home today with a fever and soar throat . poor guy
off to get to dr apt today
have a warm day

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Sue I actually slaughtered and butchered hogs up in Urbana back in the early 70's.
A Family I knew from Kettering did it annually at their Parents place.
Started about 7 AM took till about 5 PM w/ a break for a big farm lunch.
Hard work, but I learned a new craft and got 15 pounds of fresh sausage to take home ;-)

Thanks vic!
I think you better get some Honey Butter ready for that Cornbread.
If you grow up w/ Sweet the Southern CB tastes bland.
Grandma made it w/ Molasses.... central KY style.

We woke up to a skiff of snow.
Wind s are still blowing but much lighter now and not gusting.
Every 5 minutes you get to play pick the weather...
Sun breaking through the clouds and snow
or cloudy and no snow...lol!

The furnace is working well and now we know what the issues are so.....
The GH temps are in the low 50's as is the Sewing Room.
I'll be going out there to start prepping for the dry wall and will just throw on a coat.
No need to heat it up just yet.
We're looking at maybe installing a ventless Natural Gas space heater out there.

We're a bit warmer than Sue at 21° but FAR below our normal 44° High for this time of year.
In fact we are colder than our normal Low of 29°!

Sun just popped thru and snow flurries are coming down.

Ric

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Snow flurries here but shouldn't amount to anything. Cold as can be. Have I mentioned I hate cold weather?

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Weather sounds about the same here...although we were at 14 * this morning. Sun is now out...and not quite as windy..but supposed to only be a high of 23 today! Brrrr...already got the woodstove fired up!
Bonnie..hope DH finds his hunting dog! Hope you continue to feel better. Just want to say..that's the way Fibromyalgia does though. You will hurt like crazy...then it will ease up...sometimes just disappear...until the next time it hits.
Janet...best of luck to you on the gall bladder surgery.
Yeah, Chele...let us know if we can vote more than once?????
Yes...I am going to be lost with DD here! We have had a great time! I think she is going to help me wrap presents today! And we may have to mail some. Guess you are only allowed 50# in your bag on the plane...and think she might alraeady have that!

Waving~~~~~~~~~~ to all the rest of you that posted...AND the lurkers!!
Off to get some lunch. Dave has to go to work today...ohhh...and he woke up with a throat thing going on this morning...so he isn't feeling the best!
Stay away from meeeeeeeeee....lol!!!

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Ric for 17 years, that is the way we spent Thanksgiving, killing hogs. Everybody worked, and when we got those 4 days in a row, it was major work days. We always killed with his uncle and sometimes we have butchered up to 10-12. Neighbors would bring theirs in, they would butcher it, and then they would take it home, or to the locker to have it processed. However, we did everything with ours ourselves. I have seasoned and wrapped more hams and shoulders than anybody I know, cut the tenderloin, and ribs, trimmed sausage, and rendered the lard. Back then, the lard was used, and we didn't have any qualms about using it, as that was before the trans fats, cholesterol, etc. Boy did I have good flaky pie crusts then!!

After working with it for 4 days it was a bit before I wanted to eat any of it.

Marcy, I am still convinced that I do not have RA, but rather Fibro. But until some Dr diagnoses it, I have to just learn to live with it. Good luck with the gift wrapping, and keep Dave at arms length. Not a good time to be sick.

Sue, sorry that Austin is sick again, hope that he can shake it before Christmas.

My gifts are all wrapped, and now I am off to find something else to do.

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Well, delivered 7 bags of candy, and got a $5.00 tip! :O) That was fun. Then proceeded to use it all up on mailing candy and refilling prescriptions. :o( Still have one to go get, too. Dang...

I need to do another batch of caramels, cause I have 5 bags that are due this week, and since tomorrow is the last of the work week, it needs to be finished and delivered.

I've lost my cookie press...now how in the world does one lose a cookie press??????? The box is there. The recipe book is there. All the plates are there...but the press itself is GONE! Geesh, and Lisa asked for Spritz cookies for Christmas. If it doesn't show up I'll have to buy a new one. I just saw one at Walmart for $10.00. It was by Wilton, so it should be a decent one. The one I lost was a nice heavy one. Sigh...

Okay, it was 18* here this morning and with the windchill I think it was about 0. Brrrrr...

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Well add me to the list of unemployed. My employer laid off about 25% of his workers yesterday. I don't see the chance to be called back. They let go all the people in my department on my shift.

I think it may be time to think about something different for a living. Printing is a dying business.

What in the world that will be - I have no clue.

I really should go on disability - but the unbelievable time you have to wait till your first hearing bankrupts must people, and it probably would me too. I understand it would be 2 years, then probably get denied and have to appeal, which would take another year or two. My disease is rare enough, that it is hard to say I would get an exam doc who has even heard of it.

Guess I will have more time to post from here on.... Will try to hold on to keeping the internet as long as I can.

Jules

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

So sorry about your lay off. It's a bad economy we are having to deal with. I sure hope something pops up for you really soon. Don't lose hope. God is faithful.

I well remember butchering. We call it a boucherie. We did mostly hogs and gators. Quite a combo I know but we ate 'em both and still do. Not together of course. LOL

I picked up an egg today even after yesterday's mishap. Things look good this morning. Just very cold. Have a small water leak in the cellar. DH is gonna get somebody to fix it. Other than that we are good today. I have to get the house cleaned up for company on Sunday. Also have to bake 2 batches of Amish Freindship bread and have to make a pot of chicken stew for the ladies supper at church tonight. I'd better get off here and get back to work. You all have a good one.

Austin has strep :( bummer
wow Bonnie and Ric .i didn't know you all did that . I would love to learn more meat fabrication. I really enjoyed it in School .
Jules sorry to hear of the lay offs. That is a hard one . I m sending T&P for you .
Cajun chicken stew sounds yummy.
not much here
just really really cold !!! -2 and blowing hard ! the winds . blew my egg basket with one egg in it down the road . sheesh. i ran after it LOL just for one egg ? but l love my egg basket .
good night

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Sorry guys. I'm running in place! I think you can only vote one time since it makes you sign in. It didn't let me vote at all. :(

Caneyville, KY(Zone 6b)

Hope everyone is staying warm.

Bonnie, I agree. Sounds more like Fibro than RA.

Cajun, beautiful picture you posted.

Waving to everyone else as I make a quick run through. ~~~~~

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Jules, sorry to hear your situation. I agree, that printing is a dying business with all the new fangled computer programs that let amateurs do it themselves. I just had note cards done for our church, wish I had known that you needed the business, I would have sent them to you to do. I don't know about taking that long for disability, when DH had his horrible accident, he had to apply just so that work would give him an extended sick leave. He wasn't serious about it, but it was a requirement. Well he recovered, after a year off work, and then he started having problems related to the accident, and he applied for it again, just as a semi disabled person for a short period of time. He got it promptly, but only for 6 months, but could have stayed on it had he chosen to. He never had a lawyer, or anything. That was in 1990, so it may have changed drastically after that. Anyway, he went back to work and retired from GE in 2000. I would give it a try, and your Dr that you have now could probably testify for you.

Joyce, I promise, I didn't take your cookie press!! Did you find it? You can tell how much of a baker I am, I don't even know what it is.

Sue, sorry about Austin, sure hope that he recovers, and that it is not passed around so all of you have it. Funny abou the egg basket. But if you like it so much, I would have chased it down too. Maybe George has some animal he would like to donate to this group to slaughter, and to practice on dressing it out. Would give you some first hand experience. We will be slaughtering a heifer probably the first of the year, but it goes directly to the locker where they will process it. Just too much work, and too cold too.

Caj, okay, I guess I knew this at one time, but where are you originally from to dress out alligators? I am thinking Louisiana, right? Okay give us a short version of dressing out an alligator.

robin, what is keeping you busy now days? Did you get to go to the Ky RU this fall? I didn't make it as I had 2 DG members who drove from WI and visited that whole weekend. We had fun.

Marcy, hope that you have had fun with the DD, and hope that it isn't too painful to see her leave again. Does that mean you won't be needing an escort to the west coast to visit her? Maybe in the summer or fall?

Ric, have you gotten all the prep work done on the sewing room so you can start hanging the dry wall?

Chele, Dang, I would have gone back and voted several more times. He is sure to win.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Jules sorry to hear about the layoff.
It's like dominos out there....

I got a letter today telling me about Pell Grants.
The letter is actually my proof of umemployment for school financial aide offices ... hmmmmm...
Plus if I apply and get one my unemployment isn't affected... wish they had sent me this 7 months ago...

Yes Bonnie I started hanging the 'rock'.
Well mostly it was getting ready to hang the 'rock' lol!
Had to find all my stuff from back in the Spring when we did Robyn's Parent's House.

Then Robyn needed help in the attic.
She's insulating and has finished one side...
so we had to move everything from the 'to do' side to the done side.

I did get the first 1/2 sheet up on the ceiling and some of the smaller pieces on the walls.
That wall is a bit wonkie so I had to do a little trimming.
BUT that means no more tweaking till I get to the other end so.....
Tomorrow will go smoother as I working in a clear spot now. Hopefully...

Ric

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Jules, drat I am really sorry to hear you lost your job. I know the insurance has been important to you. Disability sounds like it might be a good option; you never know, as Bonnie said, it might not take as long to go through as you fear. I'll keep you in my prayers.

I got the sleep study results back today and got a new machine. Since my deductible's paid, I won't have any out of pocket other than the copay today. Thank goodness, because it would have been $1600! Holy cow, what a RACKET. They turned my pressure up on it from 8 to 12, so I should notice a difference.

I've got an appointment tomorrow afternoon to get an MRI on my right knee. The orthopaedic doc agreed to order one at an imaging center that's on my insurance if I would come to see him to go over the results. So, considering I won't have any out of pocket for the MRI, I guess paying another $88 to him isn't the end of the world. It's just a drop in the bucket compared to what we already him because of his not being on the insurance anymore.

I was hoping I could get MRI's on both knees since they're both equally painful, but for whatever reason, the orthopaedic doc didn't document that my left one was a problem, too. My family doctor DID, but she sent word back to me that she doesn't order MRI's, just refers patients to specialists who order them. SO, when I see Dr. J next Friday about the MRI on my right knee, he'll document the left knee and order an MRI for it. I'm trying to get this all squeezed in by year's end. Tick, tick, tick!

We're having our best friends over for our annual Beast Feast (a nod to How the Grinch Stole Christmas). Tomorrow I must get brine ready for the turkey, bake some Italian herb bread and do as much of the dusting and vacuuming as I can tolerate. Howie may have to do that part.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Kimberly, do as little as possible before hand, and really clean AFTER the guests have visited and gone. If you do before, then you have to go back and do the after. Lesson I learned many years ago. Do the dusting of the rooms that will be used and the vacuuming, and call it good.

Ric, sometimes rounding up the tools is as time consuming as actually doing the work. This sounds like a load of crap, so want to run this by you. We put up a nice Pella storm door, 2 years ago, and we noticed this summer that the rubber part at the bottom that actually seals out the cold air is partially gone. I went to Lowes, and told them the story and asked what I needed, well they wanted me to find the make and model of the door, and they will contact pella to get a replacement one. Isn't there a universal product that can be used rather than go through all of this? Winter will be over before I get that replacement, and I need something now. Is there something else that can be used? Thanks for letting me pick your brain on this. They guy may be entirely right, but it sounds like another product would be made for this purpose.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Here's Pellas # 1-800-374-4758
Maybe they can speed it up.
We have a Pella too... I'll look at the sweep tomorrow and see if I can suggest something Bonnie.

Watching the Browns BBL....

Ric

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Ric

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

And the Browns beat the Squealers!!!!!

I've just had my Christmas Present! LOL!

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Morning friends.....baby, it's cold outside! Brrrr!

Didn't find the cookie press...so I'll get the one I saw at Wally World for $10.00. It's by Wilton so should be just fine. I checked for them at Meijer's and they had them on sale for $15.00. I've been out of work for almost a year, but my math skills still work, so I'll go for the $10 one!! ^_^

Jules, join the crowd, girlfriend. I'm so sorry you lost your job. But try to see the silver lining. Now you can be at home with Jules when the snow is flying and the temperatures are in the cellar!

Believe it or not, this city girl was involved in many hog slaughters as well. Had a cousin, and my folks always helped. My favorite part was making the sausages...okay...watching making the sausages.....I was probably 7 at the time.... also helped with the chickens....never could figure out how a chicken could still run around without its' head! Ok, nuff of that.

Sorry little Austin is feeling yukky again, Sue. :o( That little guy just can't catch a break!

Kim, good luck on your MRI(s). Hope they can get you all taken care of by the end of the year.

Exercise today for Bertie and me. So I'm freezing now, but I'll be sweating later!!!

Gw good luck on your MRI's hope it goes well. Have a great beast feast , it sounds yummy.
Bonnie and Cookie, thanks for the kind words for Austin , i will let him know his being thought of .
Jules my uncle does antique printing . i get a card from him every year for the holidays. I treasure them ! that style of printing is wonderful.
well not much here
i spent $80 on art and craft junk for the kids to decorate ornaments sheesh when did this stuff get so expensive ??? glitter was 6.99 ! the last i bought it was .99 per lbs ??? ok ok so that was 20 yrs ago .
I blame Martha Stewart !!!
welp off to feed chickens

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Egads! Glad I don't do much crafting anymore. I never was a fan of glitter. Just can't keep it where it belongs.

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Just a quickie here...hi everyone!
Does anyone know where..or how to find...pics of Michele's whole family???

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I haven't butchered a pig, but I did read Robert Newton's, A Day No Pigs Would Die back when I was a teen. And I have cleaned pheasant and duck. Does that count?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Well, Nolan says my fun time is over. Gotta find a way to entertain him until hubby gets back from the grocery. I'm burning off nervous energy by baking (which will be gifts).

Have a great day!
