Winged Bean

if any one has had trouble [except me] finding Day length Nutral Winged Bean seed, -- Kitazawa told me that theirs is Day Length Nutral, -- the Bad news is, they want $100/pound for the seed, Is any one else interested in,- or already growing Winged Bean?? the whole plant is edible--and quite good tasting.

-- I got 1/2 pound from Evergreen, and 1/2 pound from Kitazawa, and some misc small amounts from 3 other places, --Kitazawa's came today, --they are very quick with the shipping, --Evergreen was about $28 with the shipping, got them 2 weeks ago,--Kitazawa was about $56 with the shipping added, --I will trial all varieties and see what happens, -- as usual , this should be fun, --it will take the whole season to get much more info, -- so --I will just wait and see wich ones do well here and are really Day length nutral, -- my reading on the subject, sugests, there are as many as a thousand varieties, --[look out plant files] MichaelP

When are you planning to plant these? I have purchased some seeds also from Evergreen and live in 8b zone in Florida. I was thinking maybe April, do you think that is a good time?

I will watch for warm weather but usually it is the 2nd or 3rd week in april for this kind of thing, [for me]

if you want to grow these , I would be willing to share a few seed from Kitazawa, that are suposed to be day length nutral, [if you would like], --I ordered 1/2 pound, and it will not take quite that many to plant the 200' row I have for them, --Yours in the garden, -- Michael

Thank you for your offer, but I have purchased some seeds from evergreen. I would love to see how your plants grow next year, though. How are you planning to eat the winged beans?

I'm thinking about stirfrying but I think it would do well deep fried, like tempura. Also have a few oriental veggies growing right now.

I plan to experiment with diferent ways of eating, and canning them, -I eat most things steamed, but also stirfry a lot, I am sure deep fried would be good also, If I can preserve them for storage, [and have them still be good to eat] I will be excited, but I will also see if I can market the fresh beans, and maybe vine tips and first few leaves also, as long as they are good and tender, with simple cooking or steaming, -- from what I have read, --there are a lot of varieties and diferences in palatability between them, --

The seed from kitazawa was great, [original post was made in Orange Springs FL]
grew very well, and produced a lot of great tasting beans, I grew them for several years.. the seed from Evergreen was not day length neutral - and did not produce many beans.
I am thinking of moving back to Florida, to be closer to family-- If I do-, I hope to plant these again...
