Joyce... I hope Cayenne and Maggie don't catch what Josie had. Pebbles has it this morning. Must be a dog virus of some sort. She was acting fine when I was down there, so hopefully she was not contageous then.

Franklin, OH

Thanks everyone for the Happy Birthday wishes. Really been busy with celebrating being a year older and getting ready for my family from Ky. this weekend. Just wanted to tell everyone the RU was great as always, enjoyed having you all at my home. Next year it will have to be at our place. It is so great getting everyone together and hav ing a good time. I think Martha and Morris are an amazing couple, they are so enjoyable to be around. Thanks again for all the birthday wishes. Have a great weekend.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Well no frost here.
Lots of Fog but temps stayed around 45° and we have a mild breeze.

We started the GH on the Sewing Room roof yesterday.
As the SR roof slants we had to compensate for that in the framing.
But the first wall is now framed and as we will build off that it shouldn't be too hard from here on out.

Jules I'm glad Josie is doing better!

Good morning all! Happy belated birthday Bertie!! I hope you have many more!
Martha and Morris ARE amazing , aren't they? I just hope I can do as well when I reach their age. This just goes to show you what gardening will do for you...lol!
Nothing much going on here. Dave put a bunch of plants in the barn last night, only to take them all back out this morning. No frost here. Yay!
Now I have to get out there today, and get more ready to bring in. Ya know...He is worse than me about bringing things in...and then he blames it on me!!! LOL!!
Anyway...I am going to try and get more of them done...also maybe a couple of windows.
Hope you all have a wonderful day out there!

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well, guess everybody has been busy with other things today, and no posts since Marcy at 10.

I did paperwork all day. Our Methodist Church has an annual meeting where year end reports are handed in. This is a District meeting and there will be about 25 churches represented. I didn't get the papers until the end of last week, and I have spent almost all day filling out reports for that meeting on Saturday. I did take break and cooked some food to take to a pot luck tonight. It was good, and had a good variety of foods to choose from.

That was my day, and I imagine that tomorrow will be similar, need to finish up those reports, and if it doesn't rain, need to get out and get some iris in the ground, and dig my little measly potatoes. I only planted 5 pounds, so will use a fork and get them out of the ground.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Well it was a busy day.
We have 1/2 the GH framed.
Were going to 'Hoop' it at that point.
Now we're going to just do it all in wood.
Little more work, little more money but much easier to cover.
Cheaper to heat too as we can double wall the plastic.

Ric, looking good. Will there be permanent outside stairs to get up there? If not, want to see you with a tray of plants descending the ladder next spring!!

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

How much would you and Robyn charge me to come build me one??????
Looks like you know what you are doing!!

Flemingsburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Hello Marcy and everyone
I am still here
trying to keep up with everyone
glad everyone had a good time at fall ru
I have been having problems with my legs this summer
Dont know if anyone saw how swollen they were at spring RU or not
They have been swelling to my knees this summer
worse than ever before and very sore and
My dr. finally sent me to a specialist a vascular dr.
I have lymphedema.. I like my dr.
No cure for lymhedema .
Have to wear stockings with 30/40 pressure
Talk about hard to get on and hurt so bad getting them on in the begenning
But they took away the pressure in my legs and my legs feel much better now
The swelling is going down. about half way
i will have to wear the stockings forever i guess
But that is ok with me

Well didnt mean to write a book lol

Pauletta

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Pauletta it's good to hear from you!!
Glad to hear they have a diagnoses.
Sorry there's no quick fix but what he suggested seems to be doing it's job.
Good to hear you're feeling better.

Marcy we don't charge much per hour but the 70 cents a mile each way, each day would kill you.... lol!

Bonnie we will put in some sort of stairs eventually.
We did though spend several years bringing plants up and down on that ladder when we had the Hoop house up there.
BIG Plants.
The window you see here, which we just replaced three years ago, will be removed and a door put in.
(That's our bedroom window.)
The usage will be mainly the smaller pots and then seed starting.
The GH will be about 10' x 9' of usable space w/ an 8' peak on the roof.
The back side will have a chase to run a duct from the attic down to the Sewing Room.
We'll 'Tee' off a register to heat the GH at night.
It gets sun almost all day in the winter and easily reached 80 degrees on sunny cold winter days..
W/ the Hoop we blew hot air back into the bedroom.
Now we'll put in heat sinks to help hold temps at night.

Paulettaaaaa....SO good to see you! So sorry about your legs. I've never heard of that condition before, but will look it up on the internet. And yes....as a matter of fact, I DID notice your legs were swollen this past spring. I really hope those stockings will continue to bring down the swelling and take the pain away. Always something..isn't it??
Ric...LOL on the 70 cents a mile! Yeah...don't think I could manage that! Unless you did it all in one day...lol!! Hmmmm..I better shut up...that would still add up big time!!
Bonnie, hope you get many potatoes! I think that is what I planted..5 lbs. and I got quite a few from that ! Hope you are feeling better?????
Well..I am off to bed. Not much sleep again last night...so maybe tonight...I will!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

LOL!
We got harvested fewer potatoes than we planted.
Too cool too wet.

Ric

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

I may have left the potatoes in the ground too long, but I will not know until I dig them. Janet and Ihad lunch the other day, and she was saying that the yield shoudl be about 10%, so if that is true, I may have 50 pounds. Well, just wanted to show DH that they do produce more than what he thinks.

Paulette, so sorry to hear of your medical ills. Guess we all have something to deal with, but hang in there, and I am sure that you will have lemonade before long.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Ric, that looks awesome!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Pauletta, sorry to hear about the lymphedema. I know that is a concern for cancer survivors, especially women who have had mastectomies; it can develop in the arms with them. I read an article about it to learn more and thought you might benefit from it. http://www.thedoctorwillseeyounow.com/articles/womens_health/lymph_9/ Are you getting the massage in conjunction with the compression?

Jules, glad Josie doesn't have the nasties back. I hope Pebbles and her both get over it quickly. We'll hold off on getting together - no desire for the splats here, thanks. ;)

Ric, the greenhouse is going to be awesome! Do you remember how my nicotiana planted below the ventilation system's vent stayed green all winter and bloomed in April? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/410598/ This year I'm finally getting around to seeing if I can harness that energy.

We now have my mini greenhouse in front of the vent and I cut a flap cut in the plastic to allow the warm air from the vent into the greenhouse. It's also against a brick wall that gets sun from morning until around 2pm, so there is that retained heat. I have a homemade earthbox (HEB) with six pepper plants taking up the bottom portion of the greenhouse and two pots of habanero peppers in the top. The bell peppers have so many fruit developing on them still, and so many blooms, I just couldn't let them freeze.

The greenhouse has some tears near the peak, and I figure I'll leave them in there for ventilation. My main concern is keeping the roots from freezing as well as the water in the reservoir from doing so. I might divert the air from its present height down to the bottom so the HEB's reservoir gets the warm air blown right on it. Residual heat would then rise and keep the foliage happy, along with the potted peppers up top. What do you think?

Eventually, I would LOVE to build a greenhouse along that part of the house. It's the perfect location, especially when there is warm air exiting the basement and being wasted. It would have to be beneath our bedroom window, though, so height would be limited.

Here's a picture:

hey gang
well just not in mood to can today
harvested sweet potatos and it looks good for a first timer ! some big one and some little ones too . those will go to the chickens .
well i got chicken ready to can and the broth so i better get at it
later

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Kimberley that's a great setup.
I can think of a few modifications we've used that may help.
Set the whole interior unit on some insulation.
There will be heat lost to the ground otherwise.
In fact you might think about setting the whole earth box in a Styrofoam cooler.
I'd also use insulation up the back between the plants and the plastic.
We use blue 1/4" rigid and I'd cover it in aluminum foil.
That will help reflect light back into the plants.
The dangerous part of the setup and any single glazed GH is where the plant touches the plastic.
That plastic will be cold. So the reflected light Will help it grow more upright instead of reaching South.

We're going to enclose the back (north) side of the GH.
Because of the angle it won't get any sun except in Summer. (When we don't want heat)
So it will be clad in 1/2" OSB and heavily insulated.
We'll clad the rest of it in plastic inside and out.
So w/ two layers we should get some good insulation there too.

It poured last night and rained steadily till about 11 AM.
So we went shopping for more lumber and did groceries while we were out.
Once again Wally World had skinless boneless chicken breasts on sale.
Came out to $1.02 a pound...... each $1.89 pack is two meals.... lol!

Had one of those weird experiences today.
We bought a new deadbolt for the front door.
Ours was probably 40 years old and the lock was worn out.
So at some point, probably Sunday, I was going to replace it.
Well when we got home the old one wouldn't open.
So we spent the this afternoon replacing the lock.

Ric

Ric, just in time for the lock it seems, and not a minute too soon. Wonder how things know when to quit working?

Kimberly, that is a good looking set up. Wish I could do something similar, and if I think about it some, I can probably come up with something to help the spring plants along.

Our church has their annual business meeting tomorrow night, and I have been filling out reports for 3 days. got them all finished today, all but the various signatures, which I will get tomorrow. I am so ready to move on with something different next week. I still have not got the iris in the ground and my potatoes need to be dug. There is still more clean up to do, and gathering various seeds. Not many I want to gather, but some.

Sue, why are you canning chicken? Oh, are they some of yours? If so, I don't know how you can do that. DH has a beef that he is fattening, and I have purposly stayed away from the barn, because I don't want to meet my meat on hoof, I would rather it came in packages, and something I have not known. I'm funny like that. Also cannot eat anything wild, so I pretty much stick to pork, beef and chicken and fish, and see if for the first time when I open the package. Hehe.

Marcy, I am so glad that I don't have anything that I need to carry inside for the winter. I know my gardens would look much better to have things that are not common to this area, but I have no room, and less inclination to lugging pots around. If it won't make it outside in my zone, I let a warmer zone grow it, and I will look at pictures of it in the seed catalog.

Jules, how is Josie? Hope the yukkies are all gone now.

Janet, how is the bull that you were trying to save? Sure hope that you have that problem all taken care of.

Joyce are you getting ready to start making your caramels for the holidays? Our church is selling pecans this year, if anybody has a need for several pounds. Don't know the price yet, but I know that we are selling some chocolate covered pecans that I bought last year, and there will be several of those packages here. They are sinful yummy.

Off to check my email.

Bonnie i m doing the stock i made and canned it today. I was going to do the chicken but got lazy and just ate it and added some green salsa and made some taco/burrito filling with it.
LOL on the meeting your beef LOL i feel you. Im hoping to get a deer this fall and can some of that meat up.
Gw i like your set up . i think its very cute and practical . :)

Sue, I should show you the biggest one that we dug. LOL, I have always thought that size matters, just don't have any comparison studies to back that theory up!! You are soooooo baaaaad!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Sue I wish I'd have known you has SP's.
I'd have ordered some and had you bring them to the RU.

Our taters were a bust. Dug fewer than we planted.
They were good though but I'll stick to buying bags.
Next year SP's

Those car ports will take a hit too.
Our neighbor has one and a 6" tree limb hit it. Small dent was all.
Nice!

Hello all!!
Well I can finally tell you all what has been going on this summer.

Early in the spring they found what they thought was a brain tumor. They thought it was located on my pituitary gland. Of course I went into a major depression at the thought of possible brain surgery. It started when they saw symptoms of a disorder called "cushings". I called everyone I knew and was put on every prayer/drum circle and asked our creator to please not let it be true. So you can imagine all the test I have went through all summer long. With my health history this was just the icing on the cake. My gardens went to you know what and I just could not stop thinking of possible outcomes.

Then my sister had a health scare and they "found" something in her lower bowel. She has fought cancer 3 different times and won. We were so worried this again was not going to turn out well. Then yesterday both of us got the news. I am negative for cancer and a brain tumor and she just had polyps in her lower bowel. YEAH!!!!! I slept better last night then I have all summer. That is why I have been so quiet this summer. Now you all get to hear all about our new house and my crazy life again! LOL

They think it was pure stress and my pituitary was excreting extra hormones which gave the appearance of a tumor. Until I knew for sure. I didn't want to say much about this.

Our oldest son quit school(had massive scholarships, but we could not talk him out of it and he moved this morning back to georgetown) then the middle son moved in and got caught here in Morehead for an AI(He is only 16) We also found out why he moved so fast here. He had gotten caught for AI with his mother in Georgetown.(Looks like Juvy for him) Then the house stuff and Jeff's health scare. Stress, stress and more stress.

Now life is going to be nothing but positive energy and I am so looking forward to moving and starting a whole new garden.

One more thing. Remember my pregnant friend? She had a beautiful baby girl on Oct. 1st. 8.2 lb and both baby and momma are doing great!

Well my wonderful friends I am off to work on the new house. Everyone have a great day!
Hugs!
George

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

George, Happiness Abounds! Yippee!!!

Sue, I really must congratulate you on your first crop of SP's. Great going!

I've been following along on all the other projects, health, and critters, just haven't had much to contribute except y'all are a fine bunch and I admire how you support each other!

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Darius wondered where you were. Glad you checked in.

George, eegads, glad that your health scare turned out okay, but I know you must have been scared to death before the diagnosis. So is the house all yours now, or still waiting on more paperwork.

I need to head outside and plant some iris.

Geo i m so glad things are working out , even with the stress. I am sending T&P for you and yoru family. I sure hope your oldest can get his @#$ together. I know its hard but jail might save his life ?? i wish i had done that with my oldest.
Tell Jeff i m sending T&P for him too . :)
well today was the last day of soccer and i m soooo glad it is over !!!
Ric i will be ordering more SP in Dec. LEt me know if you want me to get you some. I can't remember off hand what the cost was . But a very very good site i ordered from . (darius said so ) my potatos didn't do well either , got blight and just didn't get anything bigger than a golf ball and my fingerlings were very very very tiny fingerlings LOL baby fingerlings.
well i m drinking a Jack Daniels Fruit punch yummy . i just needed one.
and i m off to make sweet potato pie with a pecan coconut topping
later

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Sue, this is a picture of the biggest sweet potatoes that DH dug. Whoppers aren't they?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

George good to hear from you.
You and Neal were main topics at the RU.
Glad everything apears to be doing well on the health scene!!!!!

Thanks Sue! Let me know.

Spent the day driving to Dayton, then 6 hours putting in a new door for my SIL.
1930's house so we had to be very careful removing the old one.
Found out it isn't original to the house and there was no framing around it...
So we had to frame it out too.
Kind of thought that would be what happened.
Also found out why they had paneled her Kitchen.
The plaster crumbled as we worked.
So we'll be going back up, striping the paneling and plaster and rerocking that wall.
Got home in time to see te Ohio State game...lol!

darius good to see you posting . you have been missed .

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Good Morning all!

The JDRF walk was a success. I was able to raise $215.00. Jordyn probably had around 75 people walking with her. They had purple shirts this year that said Jordyn's Jammers (team name) on the front and we were just a big purple mass!

Kevin flew in from Flordia to walk with his family and us and yesterday he had to fly back, so we had an impromptu cookout. His wife brought most of the food, so it was an easy day for me. The babies were all in good moods and sweet as could be.

I have to take my phone back to Verizon. For the last 3 days I've been having problems with it. People say that I'm breaking up really bad. So I haven't been using it except to answer it. Seems like it should have lasted more than a month, huh?

Ric, great work on the greenhouse. And your great-niece is a cutie patootie!

I think Bertie and Herb are going to go get that monster pink boulder today. I can't wait for you all to see it. I hope no one gets hurt trying to get it. It's down a hillside and in with a lot of other rocks. They're going to wrap it and use a hoist to get it up. Keep your fingers crossed!

Haven't checked in on my other threads for a few days, so I'm off to do that. Hope your week is wonderful!

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Good morning!!! Did anybody miss me????????
LOL...sometimes I wonder about myself. I see I haven't posted since the 1st. But I have been reading! Guess I just didn't have anything to say??? Or I forgot to post!! Shhhhhh...we won't go into that!
Hope you all are having a wonderful day so far? It's sunny and COLD here...but supposed to warm up by suppertime...lol! Whoopieeee!!
I got a new birdhouse yesterday for that bare post in my new little garden. We went to our friend's antique place in Verona, and she had just made this birdhouse. Only thing was, it had a board on the back for hanging on a building. Soooo...Randy took it off for us...and put a larger base on it..per my request...and now it will work on that post. Now..I just have to wait on SOMEONE to put it up!! HE says it needs some brackets under it...and will have to make them....it may be next spring...lol!! I hope not!
We also went to the 4th Street Fair in Richmond yesterday. That was a bust. It used to be really nice, but this year it wasn't so great. I do love to walk along that street though, and look at all the beautiful old homes there. There are some really nice ones.
Not much else happening here. Just going to work around here today, and try to get some things done that need doing!
Have a good day everybody!!

Edited to say....good to see you George! And looking forward to pics of your new place! Glad the health issues weren't as bad as first thought!

Getting the container into that greenhouse was something I should never have done. Now my knee is really sore and I am not going to try to modify things any more. Maybe next year. Thanks for the additional info about insulating the container and using foil, etc.

I'm in limbo again, waiting to be able to get in at my orthopedic doc. When I fell at Lisa's the day we left Kentucky, I messed up both my knees. My right knee is the worst. I saw my doctor that Friday 9/25 and she x-rayed my back to make sure I didn't have any compression fractures, then told me off my knees, ice them, take ibuprofen, etc. She gave me a painkiller since the knees and my lower back have hurt so much from the fall. The back is feeling better, but my knees continue to hurt really badly if I walk much at all -- and forget steps.

In the meantime, I need to see the orthopedic doc since the knees are not getting better. Problem is, I can't even make an appointment until the balance still owed from my MRI is paid. My wonderful health insurance finally processed this February claim on 9/25, but no payment's arrived at the doctor. So, I am in limbo.

Today my boss called me to ask me what's up, whether I think I can work this week. There is no way, not the way it hurts to sit with my knee bent in the car and to stand/walk. So now I'm coming up on being off six weeks at work because of my vacation and her not scheduling me the week after I got back. So, the system would automatically terminate me. I feel like I'm in an endless loop...This is what it was like after my shoulder surgery. She asked me to think about whether it is worth it to me to drive all that way for just 4-8 hours a week. I've *been* asking myself that, but I love my customers, enjoy the work, and like my coworkers.

This stupid accident in 2007 just turned my life around. Now I've hurt my knees and feel like I'm kinda useless. Just bad day today. :(

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

((((KIM))))) I'm so sorry...

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Sending big Hugs Kimberly. So sorry that you are in pain, with yet again another accident. Hang in there it should get better!!

I dug my potatoes today, and I was surprised at the amount I got. I only planted 5 pounds, and got 2 five gallon buckets full. So I am pleased. My DH asked me when I was planting them how many people was I inviting to help eat them, implying that 3 or 4 people could eat the whole yield. He is gone, so I am gonna get to say nananana when he gets in!!

Marcy, I missed you, but knew if something was going on with you, that you would probably let us know.

Janet, have you gotten your potatoes dug yet? Ya know they are saying rain the next couple of days. I just used a fork to dig mine, and they were fine, but it is still plenty damp to be in the field with a tractor.

Well, got to go start supper, so will check back later.

Bonnie congrats on the spuds .
GW (((())))) to you and hope you get your knee back in shape , that is painful with knee's . T&P for you .
Marcy i missed you LOL :)
today was work and crazy stuff with my oldest DD *sigh * just never ends. I can't help her and she know it . But she still is trying her best to get everyone to help her so she doesn't have to help herself . oh well.
not much else
got tomatos to do and make salsa and that is it for that fruit.
then its apple sauce oh yummy
good night
this gal is pooped

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

I poured the potatoes out on the lawn and washed them and meant to get a picture to post here. But will do that sometime tomorrow. I am real proud of them. Also dug the rest of the carrots, and they may be good for horse treats, seem pretty strong tasting. But will try some of the smaller ones again to make sure.

Sue, I hear you on the kids and problems. I guess they all have them, and most want somebody else to solve them for them. I don't think it ever ends, but we just have to keep saying it is your problem, now you solve it. I am thinking about getting some apples to make sauce or to can. I have peaches now, and may can a few jars of them for winter.

Bertie did you get that big rock? Hope nobody got hurt doing it. You have got to show me a picture, as rocks are my favorites, along side the drift wood.

Ric, is the GH just about finished? You need to update us with a picture.

Joyce what have you been doing?

Janet what are you making tonight?

Okay, I am off to check my email.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Booin I was just getting ready to do that.

Here's a shot of the GH as I left it this afternoon.
We ran out of primer.... lol!
The right side will be partially clad in OSB as it's the north side and we need the insulation.
Everything goes well we'll be 'planting' by the weekend....!
