Nice trees for bark texture in my yard are my Tanyosho pine (P densiflora umbraculifera), Pseudocydonia sinensis, Stewartia pseudocamellia (couldn't find a decent picture - take my word for it, it's very pretty bark) and crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia faurei).
