I have the luxuary of living an hour away from Wayside and several times have visited and purchased directly at their facility. This does give one an edge over purchasing on the internet/mail order. My experience thus far has been very positive. All the perennials I have purchased have grown beautifully and their bulbs (specifically Emperor tulips) they gave to me FOC due to a large purchase I had made have done awesome! They are the largest blooming tulips I have ever grown.

I've been ordering from Wayside Gardens for 25+ years and have always been very happy with the plants they've sent. Oh, there have been a few occasions where something arrived in a dead or dying state but Wayside has always immediately rectified the situation with an immediate refund or replacement. There is always the chance of something in an order not meeting expectations but that can happen with any mail order business. I have found the quality of their efforts and merchandise to have been very consistent from the time I first started ordering right to the present. They don't offer the run-of-the-mill stock that other catalogs offer and if a plant arrives that I feel is small in size it's because it's an unusual or hard-to-find specimen that would cost much, much more if it were in a more mature stage. I have always been more than happy with Parks Seeds too.

I am due a review for Wayside Gardens.
I actually went shopping on this website because of a gift certificate received from Park Seed. My order arrived very quickly and in safe shape: a violet and a silver fern. Fast shipping, good packing, and the plants look healthy. The silver fern is not silvery-white as in the pictures, but is a very nice healthy and happy plant. I repotted the violet into a bigger pot and it started new leaves in just a few days!
I am happy with the plants and the service. And I am sorry for the delayed review, but I hope it makes up. It was a pleasant experience and I will order again!

I just received my order of plants from Home Depot on-line...it shipped very quickly and everything looks good so far. I didn't realize they utilized Wayside Gardens for their on-line plants and i don't know if i would have ordered knowing that based on their rating.

As mentioned the shipping was very quick and things look good. I knew ahead of time the plants were in smaller containers and all look like they are ready for more room. As far as i know the regular guarantee that Home Depot offers of a year still applies.

Perhaps all of this is a good sign for Wayside Gardens.

In the Spring of 2007 I ordered some roses from Wayside Gardens. All but one of them have lived and are doing well. They refunded the cost of the one that had died on my credit card.

I ordered 10 rose bushes two days ago and just received notice that they are already shipped to me.

I am well pleased with Wayside Gardens.

I had also placed an order a few months ago for some evergreen hedges from a company called DIRECT GARDENING. It is a whole different story here. The plants were dead and so far the company has given me the runaround about refunding my money.

My advice is, steer clear of Direct Gardening. Wayside Gardens is much better. They stand behind their products.

On November 23rd, 2007, SapphiresMom added the following:

The 10 rose bushes I recently ordered from Wayside Gardens arrived in a timely manner. They were all packed in pots as advertised, and all but one had leaves and looked healthy. The one Rockin' Robin that looked puny is now doing well in its new home in my yard. The rest of the roses are thriving. We just had our first round of cold weather, and I expect all the roses will continue to thrive.

In the Spring of this year, I ordered a Climbing Iceberg rose bush from Wayside Gardens. It is now HUGE!! and has two dozen blooms on it. I am amazed that the roses would bloom this late in the year.

We have an acre of property, and left to my own devices, I would have the entire property planted with roses. However, my Watchdog (aka husband) makes me stay within budget. Guess I will have to buy and plant the roses a few at a time.

On Sept 27th I placed an order for a special they offered on the website for Astilbe "Visions in Red". I ordered two collections totaling 12 plants. I received a confirmation email for Fall shipping and my credit card was charged shortly after. Each time I checked the status it indicated to be shipped.
The 2nd week in Oct I emailed them to get an update and the response was my order would be shipped at the end of the month. On Oct 17th I again checked the status and it now said "item no longer available". I emailed them again to see what was going on and the response I received was as follows:
"When plants do not meet our high standard of quality, we make the decision not to ship the plant material and place the item on unavailable status".
I cannot imagine that you would not be aware of the quality of your plants when offering a special collection on the website. The bigger issue to me though is how long would it have been before they told me?? There was no mention of a refund in their email so I had to request that they credit me immediately. There was no offer to substitute a different Astible which I probably would have taken if they offered.
This was my first order with Wayside and it is a shame it was bad as I probably would have placed many more orders with them.

After my original posting I received an email from Jay Johnson at Parks Seed. Jay said they had located another supplier for the plants I had ordered and would be shipping my order to me at no cost. The plants arrived quickly and are in perfect condition and larger than I expected.

Ordered 12 Thuja Steeplechase on a Saturday. I had never ordered from Wayside and was very nervous after reading this site. I had several questions before ordering that were promptly answered. 5 days after my order, I had 12 vibrant, colorful, healthy, nicely sized trees at my front door. They were carefully packaged and were in very good shape. It was just as if I had bought them from the local nursery, except that the local nursery doesn't carry these and if they did, they would be much more expensive. So far, I am very happy with Wayside.

After reading the comments here, I was hesitant to order from Wayside. But I saw something in their catalog I just *had* to have, and I couldn't find it anywhere else. So I took the chance. I ordered a "Cherry Cheesecake" Rhododendron on September 7th, and got an almost immediate confirmation of my order by e-mail. A few days later, on September 12th, I received an e-mail telling me my order had been shipped. The plant arrived today, September 14th, in perfect condition and excellent health.

I ordered a Variegated Pink Lemon tree online and paid with a credit card. I was given a shipping time of Mid-September. Shipping was a week earlier and the tree arrived well packaged and in good condition.

I was pleased with the size and health of the tree. The instruction booklet provided info on how to treat a recently shipped plant, as well as planting, fertilizing, and watering instructions for future care.

I've had tree for one day, so I can give no feedback on its stamina in the long run, but I was quite pleased with my transaction with Wayside.

I do not think I would opt for the 2 day shipping at an extra charge again. A weekend intervened and my tree sat in the Cincinnati Fed-Ex terminal for 2 days. $5 extra for 2 day shipping isn't worth it when it takes 5 days (Wednesday afternoon to Monday morning). But, I don't think I can hold that against Wayside. They did their job. Carmellia

In mid April 2007 I received my roses, and initially was very dissappointed with the size of the roses. They did come with a very detailed planting and care pamphlet.
Now in late August, all of these roses have grown beautifully. I planted as soon as they arrived, and with protection, they survived a very severe freeze.
All roses have grown and bloomed all summer, I am very happy with these roses. Midas Touch is getting quite tall . At least 31/2 feet it's first season.

In the Spring, I ordered a rose (climber) from them...bare root...came in good shape and way bigger than I expected. I followed directions for planting and in a few days, leaves began to show. It is now as high as my head and growing like a weed (oops, bad word)
I am thrilled so far and pray that the Gardenia I have ordered from them is shipped Aug 20th as they have stated. I LOVE flowers but live on a fixed income and can't afford to lose money, no matter how little. I have recommended them to a few close friends. Maybe I'd better stop until I see what happens next.
I feel that if some plants are out of stock, they shouldn't charge your credit card until it is IN stock!

I expected the worst, but the order arrived within two weeks. Although there was no confirmation when the package was actually being sent as there is with most other mailorder nurseries I've used, I was relieved that the order came. The plants were bareroot, and I planted them within 20 minutes of arrival. They sprouted within days, and though they have not yet bloomed yet, they look quite healthy and have continued to grow in size. All in all, I felt that I had to give Wayside some credit here for having fulfilled my expectations. I have also ordered containers from them and received prompt and satisfactory service. Perhaps the trick to dealing with Wayside is to order in small quantities and to steer clear of the more popular or common items that might sell out quickly.

I have to admit to being surprised by all the negative comments about this company, as my experiences have been all positive. Last fall I ordered a Capistrano (yellow) rhododenron, an Autumn Belle azalea, two Sieboldii clematis and some asiatic lilies. I got a bonus of some heucheras. The items came fairly quickly and were extremely well wrapped and protected. All arrived in good health. Unfortunately, the azalea died over the winter and two of the lilies did not come up. I called the company last week about the dead items, and they were very helpful and accomodating -- no problems. This week I already have my replacement plants, and this azalea is larger than the original one. The rhodo and clematis are doing great, growing like crazy. The clematis is opening blooms already! The heucherras are beautiful too. I really can't say anything bad about my experience with them (knock wood!) and will order from them again. My only complaint would be that I think their prices are a little high, but they do have unusual plants that you can't find elsewhere.

Obviously a lot of gardeners want to order from this company. I did and still do, but the whole "unknown ship dates" issues and "unable to cancel orders" issue makes it difficult for me to recommend them or try them again.

I will update this post once the plants arrive (or don't).

I placed my order # 4767513 on 5/5 with all items but one listed for "Spring Shipping".

Having ordered from Wayside before, I knew and expected that they would charge my credit card immediately, have no expected ship date, but I honestly believed this time that the "Check Your Order Status Online" link would actually work.

Q. Can I get my order status online?
A. Yes! Simply click the link below to check the status of your order online at any time (this may require 24 hours after ordering to work the first time). You may also go to our website and click on Order Status to enter your order number and last name, or contact us by email or telephone.

Again, the information provided was "Order is being processed". (This is NOT a status) So, again, I sent an email, just like last time, asking what "being processed" meant and asking for at least a general idea of what month? the order might actually ship?

Again, I got the generic "Nursery Manager email"

> Thank you so much for contacting us here at Wayside! We value our customers comments and questions very highly, and we appreciate hearing from you. I'm sorry for the delay in shipping your order. The plants ordered have not yet been released by the nursery manager for shipping. They are expected to be ready to ship within the next two weeks and will ship a soon as possible once released.

So..."Not been released" again? You might (or might not) ship them in two weeks but can't tell me that in a status update? Or might ship them in two weeks because I am again considering cancelling the order? Amazing...

So I tell them to cancel the order this time and get this wonderful message:

"Once order processing begins we are not able to make any changes. If you no longer want these plants, you can refuse the package and it will come back to us and be credited back to you".

Which would be great except I have already signed releases with all major carriers to leave their packages here during the day.

They were however, able to cancel one plant...."I was able to cancel the Camellia Winter's Fire as requested and will will credit $xxxxx back to your credit card for the cost of this plant".

Which was the main plant and reason for placing this order with Wayside Gardens in the first place.

So, now (Since Wayside is unable to cancel my order) I've requested that they just ship the entire order to me immediately.

I sincerely hope they at least send good quality plants, and also insure they send the COMPLETE order as requested (even if it requires multiple shipments).

Either way, I'll post updates as they occur. Hopefully they are working on these issues.

Ray

FINAL UPDATE:
Thanks entirely to Jay Johnson and his efforts to "make it right" I am retracting my negative and now going with a positive rating. He offered the "main" plant I had ordered for free to make up for my troubles and I honestly have to say that a sincere effort was certainly made to address my order issues and correct them.

Thank you.

After getting their catalog for years, I finally ordered from them this spring. Three Brunnera 'Jack Frost' and one Cimicifuga arrived promptly and were healthy. The Cimicifuga was tiny, and since then it seems to have disappeared, probably a combination of my neglecting to water it faithfully and having its little stem knocked over by a passing animal, so I can't blame them. Despite the negative comments here, I suggest giving them a try.

I'm happy to report that I followed up with customer service and have just received a new Cimicifuga, which is much bigger and healthier than the one originally sent to me. Thank you, Wayside, for being so responsive! I am very pleased. Obviously, this company is monitoring comments here and trying to do their best, which I really appreciate.

Based on my experience, I'm a little puzzled by the negative comments about this company.

Last year, I ordered a daylily mix (package of 3) and a couple of other items. All arrived in a timely manner and looking good.

Unfortunately, one of the perennials and one of the lilies did not survive my Syracuse (snow capital of the US), NY winter. I wrote to customer service and received a prompt email reply, crediting me in full for the perennial as well as the *entire* cost of the daylilies.

I called to place another order the same day, using the credit. I ordered two daylilies, a Blue Mist shrub and, as an impulse purchase, an Endless Summer hydrangea that their operator offered as a sale item (trade gallon for $16.95, reg. $29.95). The order arrived in less than a week. The hydrangea appears very healthy (well leafed-out) and different from a nursery-bought gallon plant only in the fact that it is trimmed lower for shipping. The daylilies were both sprouted and well packaged. The blue mist shrub, even though in only a 4" pot, has a sturdy woody stem and is branched out with many leaves. I am very pleased both with their service (particularly in crediting in full an item that was only 1/3 "defective") and the items themselves.

Finally, I have to say that I order via mail frequently and of all the companies I have ordered from, Wayside goes to the most trouble to pack nursery stock well for travel. Daylilies were wrapped in raffia and plastic. The potted plants both had raffia above the soil to conserve moisture, and both pots were very secure in the package.

I will certainly order from them again.

Plants were well-packed. I was a bit concerned about one of the bare root plants, but with a little water, it looks like it will take off fine and there were three separate plants for the one I ordered. The catalog is obviously inspiring and I found customer service to be prompt and helpful. The quality of plants wasdefinitely in the range of highly rated nurseries

I purchased a 1 gallon "Endless Summer" hydrangea from Wayside Gardens. It was beautiful, healthy and larger than I expected. It has been a great addition to my garden! I will definitely be buying from Wayside Gardens again.

I bought a new house last summer, and spent much of last fall (and now this spring) landscaping the front and back yards. I ordered most of my landscaping plants from Wayside. Every plant I received arrived in excellent condition, on well-sized plants. Some plants I kept indoors during the winter, but I can safely say that all of them survived our snowier than usual winter. I just received 13 bare root roses and two Magnolias, all in excellent condition. I am particularly pleased with the Magnolias, because I ordered them last fall and they were unavailable at that time, so I was surprised to see that Wayside carried over that order to the spring shipping schedule and delivered them anyway. The Magnolias are much larger than I anticipated and look ready to bloom. Way to go, Wayside!!!

Just wanted to add that Wayside sent me two gift certificates valued at $25 each which included free shipping, for being a "valued customer". I was able to use these gift certificates to purchase 3 more roses and a Clethora bush. Thank you so much Wayside!

All the plants I have purchased in the last few years have been of excellent quality of have done very well. Last year I received a Double Knock Out Rose in full bloom, right in the box. Most of the plants look like they just came from a local nursery. Last year I purchased a Camellia "Nuccio's pearl" which arrived in perfect condition, this spring it is full of blooms as beautiful as in the catalog; this is especially impressive since I live in zone 6. This year I purchased a gardenia "First Love" and it arrived full of flower buds. I purchase several hundred dollars worth of plants from them every year and am very satisfied. The customer service is always helpful and friendly. They just seem to get better every year.

I bought elegant candy lilies and longwood blue plants this spring. They arrived at planting time and were packaged well. Unfortunately one of the longwood blues was in bad shape and could not be saved. I notified customer service and was promptly informed a replacement was on its way. It arrived in good shape and is doing fine. The lilies are doing fantastically well.

I purchased 3 very expensive trees and only after read the bad reviews on watchdog. To say the least I was nervous since I had spend well over $200. However, I was very happy with my purchase.

The trees arrived the week they said they would and all were of good size and looked to be very healthy. I ordered a Henry Lauder Walking STick, a Lavender Twist and a Brandywine Crabapple.

As of today, 3 weeks later, they are all budding with some leaves and look very happy.

I am thrilled with my purchase and would definitely order from them again but I would state that I ordered right when I received the catalog because I didn't want to miss out.

I have ordered with this company and I think even though I thought the items we small when they arrived, they grew to normal size. I have been happy with them , and have recently placed a very large order shipping now, so I may update or add a new review when it arrives. Otherwise items were shipped well and I was very happy.

Great Service again this year. Ordered some interesting things. My zone isn't open for the live plants yet, but the pots and decorative things I ordered came very fast and well packed. I can't wait for spring to come so I can get my new plants in the ground! I've never been disappointed with the products, shipping or customer service of Wayside Gardens, thanks for many years of great service!

I ordered 29 plants from Wayside Gardens last summer. Everything arrived in exceptional condition with a helpful planting guide. Only one plant did not do well and after a month I emailed the company to request a replacement. It arrived quickly and in excellent condition and thrived.
I have no complaints from ordering online from Wayside Gardens. It was my first online order for plants and it has been a rewarding one. I would recommend Wayside Gardens for online ordering. Thank You.

A week ago, I was going to post on this forum. It was going to be a negative post. I had received only part of my order and I was very angry. I work all day, most of the week, and I expected my plants to arrive in time for my day off. When the order showed incomplete, I was fuming.

I had planned my week around when I thought those plants would arrive. Looking to vent I came to garden watchdog, and started reading the posts. A negative about shipping, a negative about customer service, or a negative about the products. I have to be honest. I have been dealing with this company for decades now, and I know their customer service department pretty well. Some of the things that some of you claim was said by their customer service people just doesn't make sense. If I ever heard anything that I thought was wrong or unfair, I've always asked to speak with a different person, and my problem was often solved, I believe that, ultimately, their policies are fair. As far as shipping goes, You are often receiving bareroot plants. A company is brave to even attempt shipping bareroot plants. But, after a couple decades I've had only two replacements ever, and the customer service people were very nice, and I had no problems. For most of my general landscaping needs, I buy from local nurseries, but Wayside has always been my source for the rare plants. The catalog is very fun and beautiful. I was disappointed, but I can't claim to hate this company.

While I was reading through these posts, I noticed that they seem to be trying very hard to correct these problems. So I sent Jay Johnson an email. I told him my problem. Before I posted, I wanted to see how helpful they really are.

He was very helpful, and he responded the same day. Apparently, the last plant on my order was on back-order. He explained that, usually because of a quality issue, the warehouse may not release the plant right away. He also told me where I could find that information on my invoice. He asked me to keep in mind that because of the Zones, weather issues, and other unexpected issues that seem to be inherent in the plant business, it may be really hard to plan an exact delivery date. Mr. Johnson informed me that whatever problem the warehouse was having had been resolved, and he voluntarily bumped me up to two-day shipping at no additional charge, and the day after I opened his email, I received my plant, and it was in excellent condition.

My issue was resolved. I was still annoyed that I didn't receive the plants when I wanted, but I guess understand that these things happen. If the customer service people are always this helpful, I will stick with Wayside. So now, I guess I will post here, and I think they deserve a positive post. I even feel like I may have initially over-reacted a little.
