This is rapidly becoming my favorite seed source. Increasingly, after purchasing seed from Pinetree two or three times, I find myself browsing elsewhere and then buying most of my seed from Pinetree. Price, availability, reliable quality, and prompt service seem higher here than just about anywhere else. Since I've purchased only seed (not plants, bulbs, or gardening supplies) from Pinetree, I'm glad to hear about other people's positive experiences with these products, as well.

I have been ordering seeds and books from Pinetree for several years and have yet to be anything but impressed. Quality and selection are excellent, and they try to improve their selection each year. The informal, homey descriptions of each product are informative and enjoyable to read. Their prices are low, even when you factor in the weak Canadian dollar and the taxes added at the border (I live on the West Coast of Canada). I have ordered from several other US companies (also top rated on Dave's Garden page) and have pretty much found that I need go no where else than Pinetree. I was not surprised to see Pinetree rated highly when I found this web site today.

On January 24th, 2002, Colin added the following:

This year I ordered seeds and books on Jan 7 through the internet and they arrived by courier on Jan 22. Of about 30 types of seeds I ordered, only 1 was not shipped (German Giant Parat radish). They did not charge me for it and promise to send it in about a month, when they obtain more seeds. What more can you ask for?

Agree with other listings, but would like to add that the lack of glossy photos isn't a problem. I've found the descriptions to be adequate (& even entertaining) and you can always look up the variety elsewhere. Plus, sometimes I enjoy the surprise and have grown some unusual and fabulous things from them.

I have ordered from Pinetree many times over the last 10 years and have never had a problem with them! The staff is friendly and helpful over the phone and all orders were received in a timely manner. This is the first company I order from every year and their prices beat the competition! All the seeds I've received from them germinated readily with no problems.

They provide the best value around for regular gardeners and have a really large selection of seeds and other stuff. Service is good - not super fast in the spring but they explain that. Everything has always done well and i have been able to try many more varieties than i could have otherwise because of their low packet prices

In a word, EXCELLENT. Have been ordering seeds from them for over 10 years and have never been disappointed. Their catalog is very informative and honest and has a particularly diverse selection of standard and unusual vegetables. Seed germination rate is very high. I always order in January and receive my seeds within 2 weeks. Ordered live plants last year for the first time. All arrived at the right time and in perfect condition and developed beautifully during the summer.

This is hands-down my favorite seed company. I've ordered seeds, plants, books, garden products…and all have been excellent. I look forward to their catalog every year. Not only is it full of new plant information, but they include tons of advice on intensive culture for small gardens (i.e., the square foot method). This company is guaranteed to have just about any variety of heirloom/ethnic vegetable or herb you're looking for, and if they don't-their helpful customer service staff will tell you where you might find it. I can't say enough good things about this company.

They are more than happy to make things right on the rare occasions when they go wrong, AND you always talk to a real person when you call. I've purchased seeds, plants, bulbs and books from them. They have wonderful discounts on books on many gardening related subjects. Just a really good business run by friendly and commited people.

Spring, 2001 I purchased about 15 different seed packets from them. All seeds germinated and grew as advertised. Pinetree tends to sell their seed packets with fewer seeds and a much smaller price tag. This is attractive for people who are growing a small family garden. I would definitely do business with them again.

I have been a loyal and faithful fan of Pinetree Garden Seeds for about the last ten years. I have found the prices and quality well exceeded the larger more well known companies. The deals they offer on books have increased my gardening library immensely. I find them to be excellent in the area of customer service and would recommend them to anyone.

[I am a] 1st time buyer for this company and very pleased with their response. They were the only company in the United States that carried a particular lily bulb I'd been searching for. When their fall shipping time arrived, they informed me that their supplier did not send them the variety I had ordered. I explained how much I needed this one variety (no substitutions) and within a week my order arrived with more than I had requested at no extra charge. That's really paying attention to a customer's needs. I am impressed.

I have ordered from Pinetree for 3 years now. One item that I purchased that I was particularly pleased with was alpine strawberry seeds. I left them in the freezer for over a year, (didn't quite get to planting them that first season) and had almost 100% germination, however, sporadic.

I have not yet planted the seeds I ordered from Pinetree, but I must say that I was ecstatic to have received my order so promptly! And the shipment was CORRECT! The catalog, while not having many photos, is all the more valuable for containing REAL, USEFUL INFORMATION, not the hype and obvious fluff put out by many garden companies! I also appreciated the rather honest-sounding opinions from their test gardens. I am constantly referring to their catalog for more information, because it is so thorough and informative. I ordered online with speedy results and complete ease. I am looking forward to this garden season, and after all of the wonderful comments and the loyalty spoken of here about this company, I am almost sure I will be pleased!

I'm a relative novice at gardening from seeds, but have done quite a bit of comparative shopping and reading. Both this year and last year, I appreciated Pinetree's small packets, low prices, and excellent germination rates. This year, I ordered through their internet site on a Monday (a holiday), the order was mailed on Thursday, and I received the box on Saturday.

Have rarely felt so loyal to a company as I do toward Pinetree. Bought my first order from them almost 10 years ago, and have never had a disappointment. When I started gardening, I bought the pricey gourmet varieties from Shepherds Gardens. Their seed was good, but Pinetree offers equally delicious products, at less than half the price, and the reasonably sized packets always served me for at least 2 or 3 growing seasons. (I admit, I'm stingy with seed, so my enthusiasm for them is based on getting truly good germination, not just good luck.) Their price for floating row covers absolutely boggles the mind. Plus, their growing condition test gardens make Wisconsin seem tropical. I've never been disappointed in frost tolerance, etc. If they can grow it in Maine, I can grow it here.

I ordered a number of seeds from Pine Tree. The impatiens had a 100% germination rate. I was thrilled! But the pink mallow seeds had only one sprout, but I will chalk this up to a fluke and will order from them again this fall for bulbs.

I have ordered from Pinetree Seeds for the second year. You have to be careful to note the amount of seeds you are getting. Some packages have a lot less seed in them than the standards, but the price often reflects that. Also, some packages have a LOT of seeds. The catalogue alone is full of REAL info, and not fluff. It has very few pictures, though, mostly pen and ink drawings, if at all. Overall, they are my favorite seed source.

I had ordered several seed packages and a few books via phone, talking to a very pleasant person. Within 7 days I received my order (Feb 1999.) Only 2 wrong seed packages, one of which was MY mistake. - I called to find out about exchange policy. Was cheerfully told to keep the 2 wrongly sent packages. They would send immediately the 2 correct packages and there would be no charge, not even for shipping! There are not too many companies like that out there that I know of.

I have been ordering from Pinetree seeds for 6 years now. Although I buy from many seed houses they are my first choice. If there is a variety I am interested in trailing, I am disappointed if it is not listed with Pinetree. I have been very pleased with their selection, service and quality. On the rare occasion where I have experienced any problem with germination or quality they have been prompt, responsive and courteous.

Pinetree offers seeds in smaller packets, great for those of us who like to try lots of varieties! Their prices are very reasonable, as are their shipping fees. This year, about half of my 1,000 square feet of intensively-planted gardens are filled with Pinetree vegetables. It is my best garden in 8 years. I highly recommend Pinetree seeds. Their on-site "store" is not much bigger than a closet with a counter, but both sides are lined with clearance items (books and non-seed items). A trip to Pinetree on my birthday turned into a bargain-finding treat! Do try Pinetree. You'll be back for more...

This is the place to come to if you just want a little bit of seed to try something new! The prices and package sizes are fantastic! Sometimes their delivery can be slow, so try to order as early as possible to avoid the rush in Feb. and March. In '98 they had an excellent reason to be slow--an ice storm completely trashed the state of Maine. They sent a little notice of apology and credit towards your next order. How many other companies can you think of that would do something like that? Not many!!

Huzzahs for Pinetree! I'd like to add that their glads and lilies are super bargains. I've been ordering their graceful lemon lilies and hemerocallis Hyperion for years for myself and friends and they never fail to come up - AND have babies! Order their intriguingly beautiful Rubrum lilies. They will knock you out - and they make great gifts! Update 4/1998I'm a fan of Pinetree Gardens for their lilies, daffs, tulips and glads as well as seeds. The varieties are not extensive but the prices are good. But it's better to order daffs directly from growers.
