My expectations were not sky high, due to the low price and a few of the reviews here. I recieved my shipment today (right on time), of summer bulbs, blueberry shrubs, peony tubers, and a few odds and ends. Everything was larger than expected, and looked great. Very great looking roots and plants. I'm very pleased and will order from Michigan Bulb again soon!

I really feel that Michigan Bulb Co get's a bad wrap. I have never had any troubles with this company. I just called them yesterday about a rose I purchased that isn't coming out of dormancy. They are replacing it, no questions asked. While there have been times that their plants don't come out of dormancy, I know I can call them any time and they will replace it for me. That's terrific customer service.

I recently had six bareroot plants in the vegetable drawer of my fridge for well over a month because of bad weather. I pulled them out in late April, and they had started sprouting while still in the bags. Once planted, all of them are coming up and looking great. I love ordering from this company. The price is right, and they have fantastic service.

On April 2nd, 2012, CandL added the following:

Still love this company. Got a 50% off everything offer today and bought a ton of plants. Cannot wait to get them and put them in the ground to watch them grow. I'm not particularly worried about ship date. I'm patient, and I understand that the plants have to be ready to ship before they can send them to me. I also understand that it's first come first serve and if the harvest isn't what it should be, I might not get my plants. I'm not worried that the plants are bare root. I consider it a challange to get these babies to grow. And when they do...Wow! And when they don't, I contact Michigan Bulb and they send me new ones.
I think people who want instant gratification from online nurseries need to just buy their plants at big box stores. Bareroot plants usually need a little babying. You can't just plant them and forget them (though I've done that with success before...).

I just ordered for the first time from this company. I received their magazine in the mail with a coupon for 50% off my entire order and $8.75 shipping. So I ordered almost $200 worth of plants. All of the plants are twigs but I expected that. But they were healthy and had great roots! Out of everything I ordered I only had to have the trumpet vine and strawberries replaced. Which isn't bad for how much I bought. The trees are already blooming! They have the best customer service I have ever dealt with. Very friendly and completely hassle free! I Already started recommending them to everyone else. I would defiantly buy from them again in the future.

I am impressed with how quickly the plants came. I ordered from Springhill Farms a week earlier but Michigan Bulbs actually came first. I ordered mostly tubers but the small Ketchup and Mustard rose bush had no damage at all. It is healthy color and about 6 inches tall. The Beacon Silver I received was small and had some dark leaves on the edges. I just got it so I am not sure how it will fair later on. I will re-post if any of the plants die or do not seem up to standard. But over all I like how cheap and how quick this company runs!

I am real customer. :)

Account Number: 47281879

Order Number:   11261181501

This is my first experience with Michigan bulb. I purchased 7 different living plants, and they came in two shipping. First shipping been delivery but It lost on the way may be stolen or wrong house. I was worried but I send them email and they have very great customer service. They answered my question in the next business day, no quicker it can be. And they promise to redelivery within 5 days. Oh wow, they solved problem as fast as a lightning. They are nice and very polite. Life time guarantee is not their promise but the fact. The shipping that came to me already is dwarf lime. It is well packed, very healthy and beautiful. I was surprised by the size a bit it is about
5-6 inches above the dirt. But for the price that come with life time guarantee, I am just very happy with it. I will come back again and tell you how the other plants look. I have my own blog and Facebook, I 'll be posting all pictures when each plant just came and how they grow. So far I recommend who never has experience, their plants are inexpensive and customer service is great. A+++ :)

More plants delivery today, -.-'
1st Concord grapeseedless looks like dead stick, but good size about my knee height included root. I never seen something like this, I plant golden delicious this year on late March, which bought from homedepot. At first it has no leave at all, but way taller about 5'. So I do believe this Grape will become really beautiful plant as well.
2nd I got Tiny Citrus Orange, looks handsome and healthy also but smaller than Lime I got before like 2" shorter, but very very beautiful.
3rd This is ??? Stevia ??? O.o :-/
Looks not really good, yellow brown leaves and skinny stem, looks very sick and no pretty at all.....I send email to customer service with its pics, My family do not want that stevia, may be return for refund or replace with another thing. We do not want ugly pot plant like that in the house.... period .... not as we image at all....

I will wait a couple days for the result and come back with another addition review...

Just got a Cherry bareroot, So impressed. it does have some leaves from buds already when I opened the box. For The Citrus still looks good. The stevia plant that looks so sick still looks so sick, doesn't look any better yet. I try to be patient follow the book they provided. Hopefully it will not going to die. After the Grape give some leaves or with next 4-6 weeks I will come back for telling how the plants look. This is not a week yet after I planted them. :) so far, the plants those came, are good size. Now I will give them times. Hope they are growing well. So in the next few year I will have a little fruit garden around the desk.

Updated, and question?
What is the great size of planter for Dwarf orane item no. 66622 and lime tree 66621? Mine both plants leves turn a bit yellow and look like need some extra care like a bigger pot? My plastic pot now are 12" height and deep and have drain hole. The plants both are about 6" from the soil.
:D
Pros: I really reccomend Grape seedless concord, it grow fast and keep growing, I got a tiny flowers but they did not turn to be fruits and fall out. :) I don't expect fruit or grape after plant first season. So it is a bonus for me to see tiny flowers within a month. This is so amazing.
For Nanking Cherry, The wood stem that has yellow leaves. The leaves all dried and fall off, scared me at first :)) but it did grow right back from root made a new tender green stem with 10s leaves about 5-6" tall already, but will have to wait to become a bush, it grow slower than grape. :) Never mind. :D because it look like it has very strong root systems.
:((
Cons: My dwarf orange tree and lime leaves turn a bit yellow. I am afraid to kill them. Customer service is available even after 5 pm, and I have not to wait to get a representative on phone, this is very great!

But I Called customer service asking the planter size for dwarf lime and orange, He told me that the full size of Orage and lime tree need 4' at least diameter and 6-9" height. I said Thak you and hung up politely BUT that sounds like a pound for a fish. O.o

Reccomend to provide the pot size for the mature plant in the information, I don't blame customer service because I did not know everything in the company that I work either. And I think it would be nicer if when the customer service do not know the answer should ask for customer email or ID to contact back for a right answer. I want a right answer not guessing.

Sincerely,
Pat

How long does it take for growing Giant Asparagus from roots?

I have ordered several times over the past few years from Michigan Bulb Co, and have always had good results. Admittedly sometimes there are delays because the plants apparently are grown by different suppliers but they have always been the highest quality even though small. They grow very fast because of the excellent packaging and freshness of the plants received. I just called them yesterday on two plants that had been delivered somewhere during the time I was gone on a months vacation and they immediately rescheduled a shipment to me. They have the best price and shipping cost of just about any mail order company. I am a retired nurseryman myself and really appreciate their customer service. I ordered from this company for many times. Not because they have great plants, but sometimes can't resist the low price. To be frank, usually half of the plants didn't make it. Bulbs are fine, just small. The two clematis I just got all have pale yellow leaves, don't know how long they will last.

Anyway, you get what you paid for.

On November 9th, 2011, lvyao changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following:

soon after I post a review here, the customer service contacted me. I got a reship for the plants died. The second shipment were in much better condition, planted them in ground, now after a week, they looks good.

If they can make sure the first shipment are all good quality plants, I am sure they will have much more satisfied customer than what they have right now.

I have been ordering from Michigan Bulb for years. Some things have grown, some have not, but I have never received anything that was dead or badly packaged. On the contrary, I think they package very well. Only a few times have I asked for a replacement for things that didn't grow-- two Pawlonia trees come to mind. I believe they were just planted too late to survive. I planted the replacements the next spring and they grew.

I had occasion to talk to a lovely Michigan Bulb representative a few months ago and happened to mention that some things had not grown over the years, and I generally didn't request a replacement-- I'm too busy. (did have all the original orders). After I talked with her I thought--why not?-and sent all the orders back, highlighting the plants that didn't grow, were no longer growing, and an order not received. I asked if they could replace a few of the plants.

I couldn't believe it- I just couldn't believe it! Three different boxes of plants arrived, and checks totalling about $80 for plants they could no longer replace. I didn't even ask for anything like this! That has got to be the best customer service I have received in 64 years! I will always be their customer.

And the replacement Pawlonias-- $5 each-- they are about 20 feet tall now--they are taking over the world!

Yes, their plants and bulbs are small, but you're paying a very small price also. If you can give them a little while to catch up you may well have a beautiful plant.

Good work, Michigan Bulb! Kudos!

I was horrified and called customer service and he said no problem it's something new, just plant it and water it and all will be fine. I'm happy with all of them (several bloomed within a few days and others are growing fine), although still waiting for good signs of life on the rose ( I believe I can see a few shoots forming ). The nursery is a great deal if you shop their website carefully. I placed and received numerous orders from Michigan Bulb this past winter. I will say that I was VERY PLEASED with the plants that they sent this year---healthy, green, growing. I potted them up, and they are doing just great.

I order from them most every year, and yes, some years have not been the best. But, they ALWAYS have replaced what did not grow.

A week or so ago, I sent them a list of plants from previous years that have not survived--way back to the early 2000's--and I received an answer in about a week. First I was told to send a list of what I wanted replaced, then a week later I received another e-mail listing those that will be sent in mid-May plus I will receive a check for those they no longer carry.

I trust them to follow through as they have in the past.

Wonderful shopping experience. I placed an order at the end of March and received it mid March. Everything I ordered is thriving beyond what I expected 4 weeks later. I was so impressed with the plants I placed 2 more orders, all in total I bought a variety of plants that totalled over $200.00 and every single plant is growing and thriving. $200.00 may not sound like a lot but at Michigan Bulb that is a lot of landscaping. I received every order in under 2 weeks from when I placed my orders, you just have to know when to place the order. Don't place an order at the end of May and expect to get it before it gets too hot for your area.

I was nervous about ordering from this company after reading some of the reviews, but my 9-year-old daughter really wanted to try their strawberry jar kit, so I decided to try them just once.

Although I was surprised that it took them over two weeks to ship this, I was very happy with the condition that the plants arrived in. Also, the jar is wonderful. I purchased a jar last year from a garden store that was terracotta. Aside from being very heavy and hard to move around, my large dog ended up knocking it off the porch and breaking it. This jar is a heavy plastic and even my daughter, who is very small, is able to move it around after planting everything in it.

I planted all of the strawberries, then came our wonderful Oklahoma weather. The temp went from 85 to 40 in two days and I was forced to move this pot inside. The next day as my daughter was watering, she called for me to come look at it. Every one of the 20 plants had beautiful green leaves already unfolding.

My daughter was very excited and I was so happy I placed another order. After placing that order, I was disappointed to see that it would be two weeks before shipment, so I called. I spoke with Kim and she was happy to put a rush on the order. She explained to me that would cause my order to be shipped within a few days and I wouldn't have to pay any extra.

I will update when I receive the second order, but so far I am very happy with this company.

On April 27th, 2011, DRBlack added the following:

The second order that I placed arrived with-in a week of ordering and I am happy to say the strawberries in the second order have out grown the first order.

I did have a problem with the raspberries I ordered and 9 of the 80 strawberry plants didn't make it. But after giving them three weeks to show some type of life, I sent Donna at Michigan Bulb an email. The next morning I had an email telling me that my replacement order was on its way.

I am very happy with the service I have received and will be ordering again.

I pre-ordered 12 lilac bushes in February. Received them when it was too cold to plant, so I repotted them and kept them in the house for a few weeks. To my disapointment, they all died. I sent an email to Michigan Bulb explaining what happened, and let me be honest - I didn't hope for a reply and/or a replacement. To my huge surprise, they replied in 4 days apologizing for the inconvenience and letting me know they are sending a replacement absolutely free. I received 12 new lilac bushes shortly after the email.

I am not a pro by any stretch. I'm not rich either. I can't afford older plants. Yet, seeds never seem to work in my tough clay soil. So the thought of buying inexpensive plants appealed to me. I initially was just looking for a few bulbs, but quickly feel in love with all the plants available from this site. I never saw plants like this at the local big box store. Over the past six weeks, I have ordered the following:

DWARF DAYLILIES
RASPBERRY PARFAIT HYDRANGEA
GOLDEN CREEPING SEDUM
BLACK MAGIC ELEPHANT EARS
HELENIUM MIX
STELLA DE ORO DWARF DAYLILY
PINK LEMONADE BLUEBERRY
ZEBRA GRASS
ROSE FOUNTAIN GRASS
DARLING DILEMMA DAYLILIES
BLUE FESTUCA GRASS
CROCOSMIA 'EMILY MCKENZIE'
3-IN-1 ROSE OF SHARON
BUTTERFLY BLUE SCABIOSA
SUPER ASTER

In all, well over 100 plants and a few bulbs for a total of $292.97. I would have spent three times that much at the big orange store without the selection I got. It is so exciting to watch them grow from virtually nothing. Once invisible from the road, some of the lilies are 5 and 6 inches tall in just a couple weeks. To be honest, I would have been disappointed but not surprised if I lost half the plants. They are so small that I didnt give them much of a chance. But to my pleasant surprise, my last count was three that have not flourished; even in my tough clay soil. I've kept them watered but that's it. I'm still keeping my expectations realistic so I'm not looking for many blooms this first year. To only loose three plants so far out of a number well above 100 is incredible. I do plan on testing that guarantee; especially considering the other people's comments. But even if they told me to go fly a kite, I still couldn't be happier with how well these plants have done. My neighbors watched me plant for the better part of two weeks as I moved out boring monkey grass and prepared the ground (that clay was tough.) It's so rewarding having cars stop by on their way home just to compliment the end result. In the words of the Chicago Cubs, "Wait 'til next year!" They ain't seen nothing yet.

I have placed several orders with this company and have only been delighted. I have called customer service once and got through quickly and they did exactly as I requested, though I primarily deal with them via email. There are a few things to know though. They do differ from many other companies in that they charge you when you place the order, not when it is shipped. I have run into an instance where I ordered an item (with several others) and they ran out so it would not be shipped until the next season. I requested it be removed from the order and received a prompt refund to my credit card and no "guff" from the representative. I believe that removal also dropped my order total to below the amount for the discount I received, but they allowed the discount to stand.

I have had two experiences when requested replacements/refund other than that. With one, I received the item andit looked a little worse for the wear, but I planted it. It seemed to die out, but this was in the fall and the only way to tell that was to wait until spring and see if it came out of dormancy or was dead. They only sold this particular item in the fall and rather than have me wait a year to have a replacement sent (if it was dead) the cs rep opted to send me a refund instead. I did not demand or request this refund, I had just emailed my concern. To my delight, the plant bounced up in the spring and is doing great. The roots of these plants are truly strong and the plants are quality. On the second, I sent an inquiry about when the plant should come out of dormancy, as I had purchased several varieties of the same plant and that was the only one that had not leafed out. They promptly sent me another one as a replacement. Again, the original plant ended up "waking up" a couple weeks later and I did not demand the replacement and had explained that I was not sure if it was still in it's dormant state. I find their service to be excellent.

The plants are small, but they are very strong-rooted and "survivors". Even if they look as though they are not thriving, give them a season and they will prove their quality. I have never had this company deny an order to avoid replacement or anything. In fact I got some lily of the valley that I think may not come up this spring, but I'm giving them until fall to see if they might come up then.

This company has great service, stands by their products, and has great prices. As long as you go into it expecting petite sized plants (that typically grow quickly) and know you will be charged when you order though shipment may be weeks/months later, if you give the products a shot, I think you'll be highly satisfied. I even have plants that are borderline in my 7b hardiness zone that thrive. Final example - I bought peonies from a home improvement center last year...only some came up a couple months after planting (all but one are thriving now), and I bought a couple from Michigan Bulb. The Micjigan Bulb ones came up and were thriving within 2 weeks of planting. I love this company!

I wanted to make sure that I took the time to rate the Michigan Bulb company since I almost did not order from them because of all of the negative ratings.

With all three of my order experiences, I received everything that I ordered, everything looked to be in fine shape, and everything appears to be coming up just fine. I did have a problem with one of my plants (which I think has to be normal when your dealing with live plants) and Michigan Bulb, without question, sent me a replacement.

My only suggestion would be that the Customer Service people have a picture of what the plant will look like when it first starts growing. In a couple instances, I didn't mark where I had planted things and wasn't sure if what was coming up was a flower or a weed. But of course that is just the newbie in me.

After reading all the comments on Michigan Bulb, Spring Hill, and Henry Fields I had decided not to order anything from them. However, they offer great coupons, have nice catalogues, and no one can beat their prices. After a week, I decided to give them a try anyway after seeing a guarantee Online. I was very worried but thought I would take the chance, even after reading all the bad stuff. I'm glad I made that decision and ordered from them. My rose came with new growth emerging . My lilac had several branches and beautiful green leaves, and not one broken. My Gardenia was a beautiful dark green and looked so healthy. Again, several branches on this one too and none broken. My Foxglove had many leaves and all looked great. They never charged me anything other than what was stated. No extra shipping even though some of the items were shipped a week or two apart. All plants were well contained. I don't know if all these negative comments made them change their practices or not, but I am a very happy customer and plan to use them in the future. This is the very first time I have ordered any plants from any company. I always bought from Lowe's or Home Depot before and I will continue to pick up some things from them. However, their variety is nothing compared to Michigan Bulb and the others. I would advise anyone to give these guys another try. I ordered over 20 items and I have received about 12 of them so far. I do not have one negative comment to say at the moment and I hope it will continue that way.

I ordered almost $200 of plants from Michigan Bulb this season and I am very pleased. Every plant is green and growing. I ordered a second Climbing Joseph's Coat rose because the one I ordered last year turned out not to be a Joseph's Coat rose. It's in the ground but not climbing on the fence, which is what I wanted. The 3 Banana Trees are 12 inches and full of green leaves. The blueberry bush is full of green leaves, as well as all the other plants I ordered. One Windmill palm has a few brown fronds. I don't know whether to return it or wait and see. I know they will not turn green but hopefully I can cut them off later down the road. I'm in Zone 7 and hope they make it through our winters. They say zone 7 in okay. We'll see. Over all, I'm satisfied with my order and will order from them again in the fall.

I am glad they wait to ship them to you when the plants will thrive. I have ordered plants I was unfamiliar with and this policy prevented some mistakes.
You do need to be familiar with how to care for bare root plants. They do not look like much when first planted, but, if properly cared for, they turn out to be better than those I bought from my local nursery. I think this is because they develop better roots early since they start relatively small.
I love their coupons as well. I always try to get $20 of plants for free. Today I was shopping again. Their site is easy to use and helps you select the right plant based on your zone, your shade/sun placement and even what colors you want to look for.

I am a 62 year old gardener with LOTS of experience behind me LOL and I have used Michigan Bulb for over 30 years.

I have placed 3 orders this fall with this company totaling over $275.00 for both live plants and bulbs. I have received everything ordered in what I consider to be a timely manner and in reasonable condition. I complained about one plant that was damaged in shipment and was sent three plants to replace the defective plant and received it within one week from the time I informed the company of my dissatisfaction.

After reading many of the comments regarding this supplier I have come to the conclusion that folks do not understand that they are purchasing young plants that have not matured (the reason why the price of the plants is oftentimes more than reasonable). You should also understand that a supplier of this type may well run out of an advertised product and may have to substitute product (in my case I ordered 5 red tulips and received 25 mixed white and pink tulips which was a very good deal as far as I was concerned) or ask you to wait until the product again becomes available.

When receiving bare root plants you should know that they do not look like much when planted but give them a year, perhaps two and they will look like the plants that the local nursery sells for triple or more than the price you paid for them.

I have found that all plants received from this company have been true to the description and throughout the years I have lost plants due to either my lack of knowledge of their care requirements to or just plain back luck or bad weather. Michigan Bulb has always replaced them without question, without additional charge for the added shipping costs they entailed to replace the plant and that means a lot to me! Their 100% satisfaction lifetime guarantee is stellar and I doubt that you can get such a guarantee from many other suppliers.

The one area I do not like about this company is that they do charge for your complete order as soon as they receive it. I would prefer that they change their policy in this regard and charge for the plants at the time they ship them if you agree to pay for the plants via a credit card. If they would do this I believe they would have happier customers and I doubt that this change would not effect their operation that much and would make people not feel like they were paying for something they have not received.

I commend them for offering a WIDE selection of plants at a price that most gardeners can easily afford. They do not have an 800 number but if you do call they they respond promptly and have a knowledgeable staff on hand to answer you questions.

I highly recommend this company, if you have time to let the plants purchased mature. If you want a more mature plant/shrub, etc. you need to look elsewhere.
