I ordered a large variety of spring planting bulbs from them, and also fall bulbs. One item was substituted for another, but I liked the substitution even more than what I originally ordered! Positive | bluebarron14 (4 reviews) | On Jun 8, 2007, bluebarron14 Silverdale, WA (Zone 11) wrote: I ordered about $50 worth of daffodil and tulip bulbs from Michigan Bulb last fall, just enough to use the $25 off coupon. I knew about the negative feedback, but decided to give them a shot since I wouldn't be out all that much and the price were good (great after applying the coupon). All the bulbs arrived in great condition and were even a bit bigger than I expected but I decided to wait to leave feedback until I knew if they would bloom in the spring. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. All but maybe a couple out of several hundred bulbs grew, bloomed and were true to the type I ordered. For several weeks, my yard was full of gorgeous flowers. I can't speak to the quality of the plants they sell (that seems to be the major resaon for most of their negative feedback) but with all the negative feedback they receive, I felt compelled to relay my positive experience with this company. I wouldn't hesitate to order bulbs (only bulbs) from them again. Especially when I have a coupon! |

Positive | wrlips (1 review) | On May 31, 2007, wrlips Drummonds, TN wrote: My order was placed May 7, 2007, received May 17, 2007. Great turn around time. All items packaged above expectations. Everything was potted and looked alive. can't ask more from a mail order company. If you don't have the time or patience for small plants don't order from any mail order company unless it states specifically the size of planting. My experience from all mail order companies is small plants. most likely to keep up with supply and demand. I have had Althea's shipped several different times and those plants come in different sizes. These guys are no different then other mail order nursery. My experience is to wait a month after the rush of spring orders and then place my order. they tend to be better packaged and better looking plants. |

Positive | scully931 (9 reviews) | On May 20, 2007, scully931 Pittsburgh, PA wrote: I bought a considerable amount of plants from Michigan Bulb this year. This is my first year ordering through the mail. I knew to expect small plants, but felt kind of disheartened when I saw how little they looked in my garden. Then we got hit with that cold snap and I figured I'd lose everything, even though I tried to cover. Well, I have to say - after several warm weeks everything is starting to get nice and big. (relatively speaking) I had a few of the more tender plants surrender to the cold, but I called and got replacements within a few days. I definately feel that they ship too early. It seems like it would save them so much in replacements if they would just wait a couple of weeks. But, at least they replaced everything. I got great deals. In the future, I will most likely stick to ordering trees and shrubs through the mail. I can find much larger plants for not much more at my local nursery. However, the trees and shrubs are SO much less expensive that I feel it is worth it. I would use Michigan Bulb again. |

However some of the strawberry plants died the following year. When they say lifetime, they mean it (I hope). Because i called them about those couple plants and they sent then out QUICK. I am starting my first garden at our new home in Concord, NC and am axiously awaiting my MIBULB order. I cannot wait to get them (next week) and plant and watch them grow. I will always be a MIBULB customer. |

I have NEVER had an issue at all. They replace everything that doesn't grow (for life) and you will never get that gaurantee from a nursery. I have replaced plants that I ordered 3 years ago and they send them with no problems. |
Positive | SarahUCM (1 review) | On Apr 30, 2007, SarahUCM Santa Cruz, CA (Zone 10a) wrote: I'm pretty surprised to read the comments here. I placed my first order with them this spring and had wonderful results!!! My plants came small and VERY well packaged. All the plants were no more than a few inches tall with 3-4 leaves, but 1 month after recieving the shippment my angel trumpets are already large bushes and my honeysuckle is almost 5 feet high! The bulbs I ordered also looked great and are coming up very nicely. As far as the comments posted about small plant size and slow shipping, their catalogue states VERY CLEARLY (in my opinion) about plant size and shipping dates. I thought they were providing very good service to hold shippments until proper planting time in all the different zones. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to do business with them in the future! |
Positive | firebird96ta (1 review) | On Apr 25, 2007, firebird96ta Winslow, IN wrote: I found this website before I ordered but went ahead anyway, and was glad I did. All my plants arrived in good condition, nicely packed in cells with protectors on top so nothing got broken. Only one arrived dormant in a plastic bag, but was a good 2' tall. I failed to write down my confirmation number when I ordered and e-mailed them asking for it, receiving a response the very same day. Very pleased and would try this company again. :) |
Positive | DHON (1 review) | On Apr 25, 2007, DHON Center Hill, FL wrote: I have read both the positive and negative comments left about this company, but decided to give them a try with a small order first. I placed an order for two butterfly/hummingbird gardens that they were offering for sale at an excellent price. I placed my order on 4/14 and it arrived on 4/23. Yes, the plants are tiny, they are seedlings. But that's what I expected them to be. I realize the illustrations depicted in their catalog are of mature plants. My only gripe so far is that I'm somewhat landscape-challenged and I thought there was going to be a planting diagram included, but there wasn't. On May 3rd, 2007, DHON added the following: I just wanted to add that I emailed them asking about the planting diagram, and they promptly emailed a diagram back to me. So far most of the plants have new growth and look pretty good. The coreopsis isn't doing anything and I don't hold out much hope for it, so we'll see how well they back their guarantee. |
Positive | jenwaterston (1 review) | On Apr 23, 2007, jenwaterston Havertown, PA wrote: I ordered from Michigan Bulb in mid-April and it took about a week for my order to arrive. Everything was packaged in plastic cell packs and well protected. I had ordered short dianthus, hens & chicks, and low-growing sedum. The plants were tiny but healthy. I used a $20 off $40 coupon and had taken advantage of buy one get one free, so I feel that I got a very good deal. I am anxious to see how the plants grow now that they're in the garden. On April 18th, 2008, jenwaterston added the following: It is now a year later and the plants I ordered last year are doing well. The "short dianthus" I referred to were actually maiden pinks. I waited too long to plant them and I thought they were dead. I planted them anyway and they made a huge comeback they've spread nicely and are quite healthy. The sedums all did very well too. This year I ordered a bunch more with another $20 coupon, and I was pleased to discover that they've vastly improved their packaging. Everything was quite healthy in plastic clam shells. I ordered black violas and obidient flower and they both arrived small but quite healthy. I am fortunate in that I haven't had to deal with their customer service. Their plants are smaller than those of Bluestone, but they are cheaper and I've found that their plants fill out quite nicely if you put them in their desired sun exposure with good soil. I feel that they offer excellent value for the price. |
Positive | Gaia76 (1 review) | On Apr 20, 2007, Gaia76 Crown Point, IN wrote: I placed my order to Michigan Bulb prior to reading their rating on the site. I received my order today - only 10 days after placing order. This is the first time I have ordered from a mail order supply so I was not sure what to expect. I was impressed with the packaging.Everything was clearly labeled and the plug pack tote is great. My obedient plant and yarrow, although small, had nice green foliage. My shrub rose was bare root but was 2x the size of another shrub rose I had just purchased at a local nursery- and cost less. The rose of sharon was also very nice sized. Prices are very reasonable and shipping was super fast. I would definitely use this company again! |
Positive | ShannonB (2 reviews) | On Apr 20, 2007, ShannonB Swansea, MA wrote: I recently placed an order with Michigan Bulb and was very happy with my experience. I ordered 9 White Creeping Phlox, 9 Pink Creeping Phlox, and 6 Lilly of the Valley. All of them looked very good. The shipping was very quick. Positive | thood (2 reviews) | On Apr 13, 2007, thood Greensboro, NC wrote: I placed an order with Michigan Bulb on 3/29 which was before I came upon this site. I started to read the reviews and was a little skeptical about my order- but waited intently. I received an email yesterday with a shipping confirmation and there was the box today when I got home. Now that's FAST! I was positively surprised at how well packaged everything was. Not only that, the plants were in excellent condition. No yellowing or wilting leaves. You must understand that when ordering from Michigan, the plants are small. Why else would you get them for peanuts? Like others have commented, if you are looking for instant gratification- I suggest a local nursery or if your on a budget like me- Wally World or Lowes, Home Depot etc. I am a pretty patient gardner, so this is right up my alley. |
Positive | slfeldred (4 reviews) | On Apr 11, 2007, slfeldred Joplin, MO (Zone 6a) wrote: On a scale of 1-10, I'd have to give Michigan Bulb about a 7. It wasn't the best, most positive experience of my life, but it was a little better than neutral. The pros: great prices(57 shrubs and trees for about $240), decent variety of plants available, website easy to navagate, shipment was correct and well-packaged, and plants arrived with good roots. I also received 10 free shrubs with my order. The cons: in short, very poor communication. (The website doesn't put enough emphasis on the very small size of the plants or shipping-related issues, such as correct shipping dates or the "dormant" state of the plants.) Too, the telephone number is not toll-free, waited on hold for 5-10 minutes, and customer service was often in a language that was supposed to be English, I think. My shipment was in transit from OH to MO for 8 days. In all, I was pleased with the end-products but would have worried less if I had more information up-front from the company. |

In fact I just received a new order and the plants and bulbs are in great condtion and look to be really healthy. |
Positive | brenb (3 reviews) | On Apr 9, 2007, brenb Kankakee, IL (Zone 5a) wrote: I have ordered from this company before and I am usually very leary about it. After all, I believe you get what you pay for. I decided to order from them again this year because of the good prices and the good customer service when things don't survive. Well I had a real surprise! Everything arrived in great shape! The improvement this company has made in it's packaging is fantastic! Last year everything was clumped together in a plastic bag, half rotten and smashed. I couldn't even identify most of it. This year everthing was packaged in protective plastic containers that protected both the plant and the roots. All the plants were clearly marked and shipped in a cardboard box. I am very happy with this years shipment and kudo's to Michigan Bulb for making these much needed improvements! I will most certainly order from them again! On March 25th, 2009, brenb added the following: Once again I have ordered from Michigan bulb and everything is firmly packaged and arrived looking very good! I think the key here is to order early and understand that for the price they are a good deal but items arn't as large as they are in the nursury. |

The mix up with the lavender was my fault- I didn't realize the plants would be SO small. There were 3 seedlings per bag and I didn't know it, but they sent more right away when I asked about it. The lavender are large and healthy, the hosta did great all summer (it's too early for them to be up yet this year), and the dianthus would have survived had a friend not thought they were weeds and pulled them up! I would definitely order from them again. |
Positive | giustcm (3 reviews) | On Apr 3, 2007, giustcm Auburn, AL wrote: My order arrived within one week of my receiving notice of its shipment. The toad lilies were very tiny and frail-looking, but they're still alive and looking very green. The creeping sedum was also very tiny, but it's also still alive and slightly taller. What is growing best are the bare root crazy daisies I purchased (I personally have the best of luck growing bare root plants). I certainly hope that the daisies grow up to be the great colors shown in the catalogue. Having had a coupon for $25 makes me feel ok about the small size of the plants when they arrived; and I'm glad they look they're all making themselves at home. |

The bulbs were well packaged and were all healthy. I would definitely order bulbs from this company again. |
Positive | omegabook (1 review) | On Mar 19, 2007, omegabook La Mesa, CA wrote: Dealing with Michigan Bulb was a pleasure. I ordered crososmia, a daylilly, ixia, hardy cyclamen, dutch iris, tigridia, and tuberose. The crososmia, ixia, and tigridia were all doubled at no extra cost. I received an email letting me know the bulbs shipped on 3/10 and they came on 3/17. Everything was carefully packaged--each variety was in a separate package with a tag including planting instructions. All of the bulbs and the bare root daylily were in excellent condition. |
Positive | Doglet (4 reviews) | On Mar 19, 2007, Doglet Alpharetta, GA (Zone 7b) wrote: I almost didn't give Michigan Bulb a chance because of all the negative comments; however, I'm so glad I decided to order from them anyway. Their prices are great and unlike so many mail order companies, they don't charge an arm and leg for shipping. |

I was missing 2 hydrangeas from my order but I called customer service that day and was assured that they would be on rush delivery. They weren't kidding because I received them today!!!(3/17/07). I ordered daffodil, crocosmia, triteleia, and lily of the valley bulbs; hydrangea, bellflowers, and liriope plants. I planted them the day I received them and they are looking good so far, although it will be awhile before the bulbs come up. We had a frost last night so I covered them with buckets. They seem to be doing well. I will post an update later in the summer after everything has had a chance to come up. I will also be purchasing vegetable plants from them in a few more weeks! After seeing some of the posts on this site, I was hesitant about placing my order but their prices and guarantee were too hard to pass up. I am so glad that I took a chance because I am very pleased with my order, with their shipping, their customer service, and the quality of the items that I received! |

I expected plant sizes like I had found in local nurseries. I have to admit I was surprised with the small plant size, but they were healthy and remained alive without much effort on my part. One of the plants didn't survive, but Michigan Bulb quickly refunded my money back without a hassle. I just made a QUICK phone call. For the low prices and lifetime guarantee you can't beat it. I was able to beautify my yard for a relatively low cost. Yes, the plants arrive small, but that allows there roots to settle in. I look forward to seeing how they overwintered. I should be in for a beautiful flower show this year if they make it. I'm not too worried though, since there is that lifetime guarantee. I was so pleased with their products and great customer service that I placed a second order for this spring. On April 8th, 2007, kimmy222 added the following: Last fall I had received my first order from Michigan Bulb. I was so please with the hardy plants and great service that I placed another order for this Spring. I received it a couple of weeks ago, and the plants were hardy like the first time. I planted them according to their free planting guide, and they are doing great despite the below freezing temperatures we have had here lately. I have seen lots of negative posting for this company on this site. I'm sure it's just because those that have a good experience don't take the time to tell the company. Of the thousands of orders I'm sure they get a year, I bet proportionally there are few complaints. I'm very happy with the quality of their plants, and I'm sure I'll be ordering from them season after season. Thanks Michigan Bulb (if you read this) for the great plants and selection. |
