Love their selections. Plants arrived healthy, well packed and with good instructions. Ordered seeds before and the germination rate was quite good. Would definately use them again.

I ordered foxgloves in spring 2002. The plants were huge, well-rooted, and very carefully packaged. They flourished right away, but succumbed to a harsh winter (very cold, no snow cover, too much sun on bare ground, monsoons in the spring). I ordered foxgloves from other mail order businesses the following year, but they were floppy (with the basal rosette too loosely attached to the roots) and spindly by comparison.

I'm a seed person, so my first inclination was to place a seed order with Select Seeds - they offer a nice selection of sometimes hard-to-find seeds. When I saw they were offering Persian Shield plants (hard to find in my area), I decided to order some plants as well.

I was not disappointed with either the seeds or the plants. The plants were the best packaged I've ordered - nice and healthy, too; I got 100% germination on all their seeds that I sowed. You can't ask for better.

Plants are packaged very well. Arrive in excellent condition and the packaging material is cardboard-type material; not plastic!! My order was filled incorrectly and they took care of the problem immediately.

Excellent company!

I found SS in an article in the New York Times.

Select Seeds is one of the best resources for quality seeds and plants anywhere. I have purchased unique seeds from them as well as plants. The plants did arrive a bit later than most, but this was because Select Seeds made sure they were the best quality BEFORE sending.

I simply cannot believe the quality of the plants- every one is more stupendous than the other. They are flourishing on my terrace.

I especially like the fact that the Select Seeds site has great information about each seed or flower. I concentrated on fragrant varieties. I recommend that others try the same- you won't be disappointed.

SelectSeeds.com is one of the best!

On June 24th, 2003, Ramnyc added the following:

After 28 days of rain in NYC, my two Daturas that had been doing exceptionally well, suddenly withered. I wrote Susan in desperation and got a fast reply that my plants were in shock from the reappearance of the hot sun. I followed her advice and my plants are recovering.

Can anyone else say that their plant suppliers are truly there to help once a purchase has been made? Once again, SS is the best!
On February 25th, 2004, Ramnyc added the following:

2004: Their new catalog is their best ever. Their plants and seeds remain the best anywhere. I placed a large order for 2004 and await the arrival of the plants when ready (their packing is the best of any and this is just the wrapping around amazingly healthy and beautiful plants). Support this company and end up with the best flowers you will ever grow!
On April 13th, 2005, Ramnyc added the following:

4/05 This year's order was a bit smaller than in the past but for only one reason... last year's plants did so well that and are ready for 2005 season so I needed fewer plants. S.S. is always great...

I order from several different nurseries each year, depending on plant availability. If Select Seed had every plant that I wanted, they would be the only company I would ever order from. I order plants and vines from them (I'm not a seed person!) and the quality, size, pricing, and especially the packaging are the best around. In addition, they respond quickly to e-mails and the customer service is excellent. I have never been anything less than 110% satisfied with this company. Give them a try.

At the risk of repeating myself.... another year's worth of healthy, well-packaged, beautiful plants and vines just arrived from my favorite mail order nursery. Give Select Seeds a try _ great plants, great staff, great prices _ you won't be sorry.
Thank you Select Seeds!

Just adding this year's update. 24 plants ordered.... 24 of the healthiest-looking, best packaged plants were delivered exactly when specified. If anything, Select Seeds just keeps getting better. Consistently the best.

As an experienced gardener who has ordered from a number of mail-order sources, I have to say that I am quite pleased with the plants I ordered this year from Select Seeds. This is the first time I've ordered from them, so I can't yet address the hardiness of the plants, but I am very impressed with the size and vigor of the plants I received - mostly annuals, they are comparable to those available from my favorite local grower, Graceful Gardens (whose superb plants I am lucky enough to be able to buy at my local Farmers' Market, but check out their website - http://www.gracefulgardens.com - for mail-order).

I was very pleased with the older "heirloom" varieties of plants & seeds available from Select Seeds; they offer a great range of fragrant sweet peas and nasturtiums, and specialize in flowers that smell good. The plants were excellently packed & shipped, arrived exactly when they said they would and in perfect condition, with clear and thorough planting & care instructions. My non-plant items were shipped separately & immediately, and were also packed with care. While their shipping charges are on the high side (and they did have a bit of confusion getting my order properly added up & billed), I am happy enough to pay their rates for such healthy & and well-started plants, and I have every reason to be optimistic about their performance in my garden. I especially look forward to growing some of the antique varieties of nasturtiums they offer that I haven't seen elsewhere!

On August 11th, 2003, cathyb53 added the following:

Addendum: As of Aug. 2003, I can add that most of these plants have grown & flowered very well for me this summer. Their Moon Garden collection has been blooming beside my front porch non-stop for months, and is keeping the night air perfumed very sweetly. Nasturtiums aren't blooming yet, but I gave the seeds a late start; they'll catch up and be going strong well into the fall, I can tell.

I discoverd this company a few years ago because I'm always looking for old fashioned plants for my cottage garden. I was so impressed with the way the plants were packed that I suggested to other companies that they contact Select Seeds to find out how to do it right! In the past I had a lot of trouble with my UPS deliveries, but with this company, it didn't matter what the UPS man did to the boxes!! Not only were they packed well, but the plants were gorgeous and thrived. I just can't say enough good things about this outfit.

I did not order this year, but used up packets that I ordered last year and the year before. The seed packets are very generous. The germination rate was still very good. I especially like the old varieties that are most likely open pollinated. The Balcony Petunias climbed and were fragrant just as described in the catalog. Will order from them again.

I placed an order for several varieties of annual flower seeds, and they arrived within a week. I can't really speak to germination rates, because I tend to use the broadcast method of sowing, choosing varieties known to seed and grow generously. If something doesn't come up, it's probably my fault for being so lackadaisical about it.

Overall, I'm very pleased with their selection and service.

On January 21st, 2005, nevadagdn added the following:

Select Seeds was equally prompt this year in sending my seed order, along with confirmation for the plants I ordered and projected shipping dates.
On April 22nd, 2005, nevadagdn added the following:

The plants I received yesterday were all stocky, healthy plants in good condition, well-packed.
On April 26th, 2005, nevadagdn added the following:

I was a little underwhelmed with the dahlia tubers I received. They ARE healthy, and each has a little sprout on it, so I know they will grow. I also am new to mail-order dahlias and nearly new to dahlias in general, so I don't really have anything to compare with yet.

As for seed germination, Select Seeds has been good so far. I wasn't so lackadaisical this year.
On April 27th, 2005, nevadagdn added the following:

The dahlia tubers (now that I've received some from other sources to compare with) are of normal size, and good value for the price.
On August 2nd, 2005, nevadagdn added the following:

The irises I ordered (they offered a handful of historic varieties this year) are nice, healthy rhizomes.
On April 11th, 2008, nevadagdn added the following:

Plants this year were healthy, a tiny bit smaller than I prefer, but not that much smaller (2.5" pots). Overall good.

I have ordered from this company several years. It sells seed from antique flowers that are open pollinated. The catalog has good descriptive information and pictures. I like this company because it has different seeds and plants. The service has been good and the prices are average. I have had good germination from the seeds. The catalog uses common names and it is difficult to locate the seeds and plants within the catalog

I also have had really positive experiences with them. Not only do they have some unique varieties and cultivars, they give you a decent portion of seeds in a pack. This has allowed an inexperienced gardener like myself to make a few mistakes and still end up with nice healthy stands of flowers. Their attitude is also quite good. I recently ordered 3 varieties of heirloom sweet peas from their excellent collection of same. When I started to experience problems with my seedlings, I sent them an e-mail describing how I was growing and describing the problem. They responded by giving me some specific recommendations and sending me three new packs of seeds. This in spite of the fact that I clearly stated in my e-mail that the seed quality did not seem to be at fault.
