Seed pod for Datura Metel
by MOLLYBEE Jul 26, 2002 12:17 PM
This pod opened this morning to reveal the seeds. When the pod opens like this, you should cut the pod off and put it in a cup or a bag, and let it continue to dry naturally. The seeds will eventually fall out into the container.

We have always called this plant 'moonvine' because it blooms beginning at sunset, but after a local news story that showed seeds and what local kids were doing with them, I had to do a search, and sure enough, it's NOT moonvine! Not sure what to call them now, as 'jipsonweed' is just not as romantic!

If you are happy enough to live in a zone in which Datura metel is hardy, then this is what it looks like in the spring. :) This plant just came back from the root about 2 weeks ago, and look how big it is already!! I expect blooms within a couple more weeks.

A 'small' sample of just how large the roots of this Datura get. Long and deep. Don't plant it unless you intend to keep it for a while. ;-)
