The Regal or Royal Fern gets quite large. This one in my garden was about 40 inches tall this year, but can get bigger. Shown with smaller Ostrich ferns to the left and coleus 'Haines Heirloom' (which gets huge for a coleus)on the right.

This photo (center) shows the Regal Fern in it's natural environment. They don't get as large growing in rocks as they do in good moist garden soil. Picture taken at Mina Sauk Falls in Missouri.

Early spring growth with fertile fronds in the center. The plant is quite upright and compact at first, sort of spreading later in the season...allow plenty of room for it.
