Bud. This cultivar is not used in the cut flower trade because the flowerheads snap off too easily.

The stigmas (at the end of the yellow, tall styles) are now without its own pollen and waiting for a neighbors. The canoe shaped stamens are wide open around the base of the styles The anthers are drying up for their pollen has already been transferred to its own yellow stigmas and then dispersed from them, leaving them bare so they can mature within 36 hours and be ready to be pollinated with stranger pollen.

The stamens are open showing the dried up anthers.

The yellow stems are the styles. The end of them, the stigmas, are slipped into the stamens and will emerge covered in pollen when the flower opens.
by Kell Nov 22, 2007 2:15 PM
Its own pollen is falling off its yellow stigmas and then within 36 hours the stigmas will be mature and be ready for pollination from stranger pollen.

This is a newly open bloom. Within 3 to 4 hours its own pollen will fall off the yellow stigmas and then mature to be ready to accept pollen from a different bush. You can see the fresh stamens (canoe shaped) way below the tall styles with their now bare anthers which soon will dry up.

To the left you can see the small canoe shaped stamens with the anthers inside starting to dry up. This flower has been open about 4 hours and its own pollen is falling from its yellow immature stigmas you can see sticking out to the right.

You can see the glandular leaf tips on these leaves. They become more red as they mature and become more leathery. They can have as many as 20 glands per leaf. These secrete a sugary solution which attract ants, flies and wasps.
