Just as the plant awakens from dormancy, you can briefly see its only leaf for the year, alongside the flower stem to come.

The aerial part of the plant is a green, fleshy stem that curls on anything on its way. No leaves. Rio de Janeiro, mid spring.

showing how plant divides... was a solid 'bulb', but then two stalks grew out of it, and then onion just split in half. EVentually they will round up and become more spherical. So California
