Nothing lowly about thistles, they may not be loved but they're one of the most dominant and successful of all plants. Several of the European thistles are classed as noxious weeds in USA, a reflection of their tenacity. Carline thistle is relatively rare, preffering dry alkaline or sandy soils. bonehead wrote:

Check out the later flower colours, for some reason this starts as yellow then develops to a dark purple colour.
