Its catterpilar fell on my knee while I was seated under a large Birch tree 23 August 2008

As I didn't know yet what's usually on its menu I tested if it would like nettle, but nope, no interest, lol.

Taken on 26th July 2008, Lincoln UK. Wingspan 30-40mm, it flies from June to August. Very similar to the Dark Dagger, which seems to be less grey and with slightly different markings.
