A female Regal moth with 2 males in my cathouse, waiting for dark so they can form a pair and begin mating. Notice how much larger the female is.

Male (right) and female (left) mating. The female began dropping a few ova before the male found her with his claspers to mate. These ova are not fertile.

A cluster of ova, one larva out with "horns" inflated, one larva just hatching. It will take about 20 minutes to fully inflate his horns. The older larva on top just finished eating some of his egg.

4-5 weeks later the darker Hickory Horned Devil on top is ready to go underground for the winter. The other Devil is still eating Sumac and will turn this darker turquoise color before hitting ground

A regalis pupa in hand. The larva burrows underground and sheds his skin to form this pupa. It will overwinter underground until the next July. This pupa will spend 2 years underground. Some do.

This is the regalis female that started the whole thing. She landed on me one night back in July 2004 and began to lay eggs on me. Truely a beautiful moth and the neatest caterpillar there could be.
