Taken 28th August 06. The female laying eggs around the edge of a pond. Note the 'face' designed to scare off predators!

It is quite large, close to 3" length. Similar to the Common Hawker, there is more green on the Southern Hawker and pattern varies slightly.

(1st of 3) I was lucky to find this female laying eggs. Her ovipositor is clearly visible. My garden in SW France, September 21st 2007

(2nd of 3) She was laying the eggs in a hydrangea leaf. The pterostigmata (dark marks on the forward edge of the wing) can be seen to be brown. They are black in the male.

(3rd of 3) She inserted her ovipositor into the tissues of the leaf. It did not go through the leaf.
