Agave Species Agave tequilana often called "century plant" around here, common in landscaping; this kind CAN be used for making tequila; easy to keep alive, but needs certain condition to grow large | 'not sure' | Plants | (fredgm) |
Hot Pepper Capsicum annuum Overwinters here in Central Texas if protected from hard freeze; if not frozen will stay green and start flowering as soon as it warms up. Excellent xeriscaping, very cute; almost viney in semi-shade. Ours is descended from another locally-naturalized plant. Yup, they are VERY hot (picante). Keep kids from handling them; wash your hands after handling. We put them in sesame oil for a condiment. I sometime use extract in bug repellent mixes. May be called "pitin" or "piquin" or "pequin" (with accent on 2nd syllable; all of which more or less mean "pequeno" or small, I think) or Bird Peppers. | 'Pequin' | Seeds | (PlantFiles) |
Capsicum Species Capsicum annuum var. aviculare We have 3+ bushes, several years old; growing with little extra care in semi-protected areas outdoors + 1 large bush in greenhouse. These are the small, roundish ones, green>>red. See our photo on the plant page. | '"chiltepin" I think' | Seeds | (PlantFiles) |
