Lilies in Alaska

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

Okay, so they get a head-start indoors. But they bloomed outdoors ^_^.
We've had record-breaking warm temps for the last three days, breaking 80 degrees, which is HOT to us. The lilies have been moved outdoors, though not into their permanent summer locations yet. A few of them decided to enjoy the great weather, too.

Rosario opened May 21, I think, but I didn't get a good pic. She was beautiful, but is a little washed out from the long sunny days. Tramp and Zeus opened next. Love, love, love Tramp. She's my kinda girl. (That doesn't sound quite right...) Being a first year bulb, started indoors under lights, Zeus's height is a little stunted, but I love him all the same...Now, Tiger Babies, hmmm...Wasn't thrilled last year and am underwhelmed this year. Doesn't handle stress well (and my lilies have to be Alaskan strong) and drops most buds before opening. And I don't know what possessed me to purchase such a short, downward facing lily. Ya can't see it, even when it's up on the deck table, much less at ground level. Cute, but I get tired of holding it over my head to look at it...Lower left corner is a 3 day old First Crown that I started last year. It's in a very small pot as I expected to grow it out another year or two before it did anything...and it bloomed! It's only about 10-12" high. Silly lily.

Lots more to open over the summer, but here are a few previews. Not many blooms on them, but they made it out to see the sun! My asiatics in the ground are a long way from blooms. Very late this year...sleeping in, I guess.

Is there supposed to be a photo here??? LOL

I adore Tramp! She's very lovely and smells oh, so good. Tramp is in my naughty section of the garden, right next to Vamp. ;)

Where can one find those? I can't locate any photos of either of those lilies.

Lovely, just lovely! :)

Lovely blooms. They must really have grown in the garage alot in order to bloom now. Isn't it early for you?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Georgeous flowers!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Wow - I love "Tramp" (that must be LAST year, right Mary? LOL) and Chocolatemoose, you always have such nice presentation and make your yard appear so un-Alaskan - not that ther is anything wrong with Alaska! LOL

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

No, I'm still a tramp.... Oh yes, those pics are from previous years. ;)

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

NYR...Yes, early blooms...and it's frustrating me. They come out of dormancy too early and start blooming before I have them settled outdoors anywhere. Got another one popping open on the deck today. My DH can't figure it out. He says you PLANT them so they'll bloom. Then you piss and moan because they open. I tell him, yes, but they are supposed to open on MY schedule, where and when I say they can do so. At this rate, they'll be done by the end of June and I'm just starting to plant my outdoor gardens. June 1 is the Magic Day when we should be past night frosts....heavy sigh...I know I'm going to go into a depression when your masses of lilies bloom...Can't wait to see them.

I will be researching how to keep lilies and dahlias dormant at least two weeks longer next year. Not sure if 5 degrees cooler in the fridge would help.

Steve...I laughed at your comment. I so understood it!...Your gardens are picture perfect as usual. Keep posting!

Headed ouside...It's a gorgeous day!

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

Missed posting a few pics, but here's a couple currently open...
Firetruck...with more orange to it than I would have expected by the name...jmorth's is the same color though so guess that's what it is. I do like it, but was expecting a true red-red without the orange tones...

Now I really like that Firetruck!

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

Silly Me...I looked back at the website pic and it is orange-red there. Guess it was one of my ordering frenzies and I selected by name thinking true fire engine red instead of paying more attention to the picture...duh...

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

LOL The excitement gets to all of us, at one time or another. :)
