Silk Road

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

I just ordered 4 of these bulbs from White Flower Farms in spite of the fact that they were $12.95 apiece. Outch. It said they are an Orientpet. Well, I flipped over the picture and description and could not resist.

I have never had orientpets before as prior to this year I have stuck with Asiatics and Oriental lillies. Decided to branch out this year.

Anyone grow Silk Road? What do you think about Orientpets in general? Thanks.

I love the Silk Roads. The fragrance is wonderful. They're my favorites.

This was the second season for the taller ones and the smaller ones near the bottom were just planted last year.

Holy moley! How about you cancel your order and get them straight from the source where they're only 3 for $27 http://www.thelilygarden.com/pages_lilies/orienpet_1.html#srd

White Flower Farm does not have a good rating http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/96/

Last year I bought some orienpets from this company. Nice bulbs and great prices. I bought Red Dutch and Shocking. Shocking has the best fragrance. It just wafts through the air. Mmmmmm.

Yeah, I got my Silk Roads from The Lily Garden. She's wonderful. I bought nine and she threw in an extra Silk Road and also a ‘Scheherazade’ as a bonus. Very nice bulbs.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I believe White Flower Farm also gets their supply of 'Silk Road' from the Lily Garden. 'Silk Road' is a favorite of mine and solid as a rock bloomer. I look forward to her grand entrance each year in the summer garden. You'll love it.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Rita, you won't be disappointed, Silk Road is an awesome Lily. I love the OT hybrids! Some of the best performers in my garden.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Last was the first year for Silk Road and I loved it. But you should've just bought straight from the Lily Garden.

I MUST get Shocking....

You will love Silk Road, I agree with the others. I think Park/Wayside and WFF as Tracey said all get their Silk Roads from Lily Garden, and my experince with WFF lilies/other bulbs has been good though it is true their prices are quite high. The OT's are wonderful for those of us in hot areas as they take high heat in stride and can grow quite large, with no leaf scorch either. Great compromise for us in the south who like Orientals but which don't deal well with the heat. I have several Silk Roads, and mine bloom for about a month in full - really!

I didn't know about The Lily Garden. Could not find SILK ROAD anywhere but White Flower Farm. Oh well, at least I know from what you all say that I will like it.

Of course I did go check out The Lily Garden website and now have it bookmarked. I filled out an order form and just faxed it over to them now, a minute or two ago. My poor credit card :-((

I just bought 3 each of 5 lillies. I got trumpet types and orienpets. My picks were MIDNIGHT, COPPER CROWN, Golden Sceptre, Sinfonia and Luminaries.

I really liked Quintessence too but did not get it because it was one of the pricier ones (and I had to have that purple one called midnight). Plus I also really liked Ice Caves but at 3 for $70.00 had no problem passing it by.

velnita- That is a great picture of Silk Road. I can not wait for mine to bloom (and they are not even here yet).

Moby- Thank you for the link to The Lily Garden. Cost me more money but who cares, the lilies are so beautiful.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Hi Rita,
Luminaries is wonderful. FYI I had to stake it with a 6' stake in the second year. I splurged on Qintesence, so I will let you know how it turns out. I just couldn't pass on a relative of Luminaries. I love looking at all of your pictures on the roses/lilies thread. My whole garden would fit in just one small section of yours. Marty

I wish I had more space. I love to garden and be outside in my garden. Hate Winter.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Silk Road is lovelty. Gets at least 7', tall here. Luminaries was a disappoint for me the first year. The colored markings on it hardly showed at all, but then the next year, it was lovely. Here is a photo. Not sure if it is the temperature or what that made it looks so different from year to year.

I've read that Midnight is one that varies a lot in color. Mine is not nearly as purple as the photos in the catalogs. I like it anyway and it has done very well very me. I think this one came from The Lily Garden.

Sorry about the damage to your credit card ~ my bad. ;)

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Oh Moby you little enabler!! You're not the least bit sorry, I know you. ;) LOL

Rita, you are now definitely one of us lily addicts. I have Luminaries and Quitesence and love them both. :) I've been looking at Midnight, too, but I thought I remembered that it might not get as dark as the picture. Moby do you have it? Ice Cave, well, I might do one Ice Cave, but not three. I could wait for it to multiply. :)

It would be nice to have a job where one could be home and in the gardens at times during the day, but alas, to feed my garden addictions and tummy, I have to leave my gardens to go to work.

Oh Rita, could we interest you in some peony and hosta, too? :) Drop on by those forums, you might get some more ideas. :)

Warning: The peony forum is almost as addicting as this forum....

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Beware, Ticker is another of the DG Sirens, luring unsuspecting gardeners with pretty pictures and the promise of fragrance, till suddenly you're hooked and there's no turning back! LOL....although, it looks like you're firmly rooted on the path of addiction already!

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Like you should talk, Neal. :) You're just as bad! :) LOL

Yup. When Gemini started posting pics of his flowers a few days ago I literally hid my credit card after looking at the first pic. Very dangerous and very pretty.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Lilies seasons? Are these currently blooming folks? I'm sitting here and drooling, credit cards? They maybe found next to a pair scissors if this keeps going. lol.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

My lilies typically start blooming in mid June through July and into August. I'm zone 5 I would think that yours would start a tad bit sooner. :) Lucky you. :)

I do, however, have lily noses beginning to pop us. Silly things, it is currently slushing out.

No lilies blooming yet up here. The pics I was referring to were bulbs. That was bad enough. Where the lily season gets here, the credit cards will go into the freezer.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

LOL, guilty as charged. After those first couple of years on DG coveting and drooling, I must say it feels good these days to return the favor, LOL. But, I'm also very cheap- hang around here long enough and you can get really good at stretching a buck while still being quite picky :-)

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Speaking of Silk Road, The Lily Garden gives a freebie with each order. I placed an order last year and received it as a freebie was Silk Road, and it may still be. If you request it, I'll bet they will send it.

I got THREE Silk Roads for $12.95 in 2006 when Wayside got the from The Lily Garden but, wanting $14.95 each could not sell them. Because they were such great stock - and TLG's is superb - the bulbs were in excellent shape.

Another Orienpet, and my favorite, is Anastasia, also a Lily Garden creation. It's stems are not as strong as Silk Road but the bloom size, scent and durability are incredible. I started out with three bulbs and have been spreading this beauty all over my yard because it suffers no losses over the winter and, in fact, increases.

Edited to say that these are offsets of my first three bulbs that I moved.

I really like pairing lilies with grasses, and Anastasia is neat that way.

Moby- Ha don't worry about credit card, it's not even full and money in checking account to pay up when the bill comes. Maybe I should go on another shopping spree :-))

lincolnitess- I will be dissapointed if my Midnight blooms that pale. I fell for the deep purple in the picture. I do think yours is a pretty color so I would like it either way. Its just that I want that dramatic deep purple.

I actually always loved lilies and have had some for years. Just now getting into the fancier kinds for me . I put in lots of new garden beds last year, planted daylilies and now want to add tall bulb lillies in between all the back rows daylilies. So I have gotten carried away with myself this spring buying lily bulbs.

Sorry, I hate peonies and dug out all of my hosta that was here forever when I got the rose crazies afew years ago. No room for hosta and I would not plant even fee peonies. No offence, sorry.

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Donna- Lovely pictures. Great ideas for fitting in more lilies.

I did not know about the free lily offer from The Lily Garden when I faxed it. I just e-mailed and suggested Quintessence since I really like that one. I do not want SILK ROAD as my freebie because I have the four ordered from White Flower Farm and do not need another. I wonder if I should e-mail and tell them not to send Silk Road?

Humm, I guess I will wait to hear back before being a pest again.

That Anastasia looks nice. I've been wanting a few of those. I saw that Brent and Becky's had them for a really good price. I've liked their other bulbs but have never ordered lilies from them. Has anyone bought Anastasia from Brent and Becky's? At $15.60 for 5 bulbs, it's almost irresistible.

I got the deal on Anastasia from B&B last fall...just couldn't pass it up. Of course have to wait to see if they bloom true...but the bulbs were nice.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Ticker, what do you mean that I'm not really sorry? You're just sore over that peony incident... ;)

NYRita ~ I AM sorry to say that Midnight is not purple as it is pictured. The outside is a nice purple-ish pink but that's as good as it gets.

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Oh, drats. Its very pretty but doesn't look anything like the picture :-((

Now I am wondering if there really are any deep purple Trumpet hybrids. I did order and plant a OT hybrid called Purple Prince from VB Wholesale and that picture showed a deep purple lily also.

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

...piping in... I, too was hoping against hope that Midnight was a true and/or deep purple...It wasn't...Mine was pretty close to the same as Susan's post on April 13. Not sure I'd even classify it as purple, it was pink. It's going up for adoption if it's not darker this year...

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

This year I'm trying Purple Prince from www.lilypadbulbs.com
We'll have to compare. We're all obviously in search of that elusive deep purple.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Rita, you've crushed me!! Not liking Peony and Hosta? Oh my.... *sob* Oh, well, that just means there are more of both in the world for me. Remember, the peony and hosta we're talking about are not your grandmother's peony and hosta. :)

I'm glad I didn't order that Midnight. I have an order form all filled out and everything, I just haven't sent it yet. :)

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

I like Hosta. Only I like other things more so no room for hosta. As far as Peonies go, I see all those pictures of stunning blooms. They stay open for 3 days max here, have thrown out any that I have tried. Waste of space.

I am real dissapointed in all the reports on Midnight. Its not just the picture, I mean one would obviously expect a lily named Midnight to be a dark color. Plus it was the most expensive one of my order from that company. Oh well.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Wow, three days. I have a succession of peonies blooming from mid May up to and into July. Oh well, it's all in what you like. I also have 11 acres to play around with.

Lilies do just fine. :)

Yeah, I'm glad I didn't drop that Lily Garden order in the mail as of yet. I will most likely go back and get something else instead of Midnight. Too bad tho. I wonder if anyone has had it bloom as dark as it shows on the web page or catalog?

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Hi New York Rita,

If you specifically asked for a lily I think the people at TLG will try to do as you ask. I used to ask for specific lilies and they were great about providing them.

Velnita and Nanny B&B is great. I saw that price and wondered, but they are reliable. I paid more than the current LG price years ago when Anastasia was newer, but I've never regretted it because they multiply so nicely. In fact, given the speed with which they propagate, added to the disease resistance, I think the hybridizer was just trying to recoup costs in early years. I have three separate beds of them now, and gave a couple of bulbs to a friend, so it worked out well.

I'm glad more people can enjoy their beauty. And one last note - they are really easy to dig up and transplant!

Donna
