What other pear to grow with Ayers?

(Zone 5b)

Bear with me.. I don't know much about fruit trees!

I purchased an Ayers Pear tree today and know that it's best to have another for cross pollination. Can I purchase another Ayers or do I need a different type?

Anyone grow Ayers because I read that it is a very sweet pear which is what I am wanting.

Thanks much,
Bonnie

Seckel is another very sweet pear.

You need a different type, all Ayers pears come from the same original tree.

Also I just noticed you asked the same question at the same time on the Gardenweb fruit group; please don't do that. Try one place at a time.

Sorry Scott for asking the same questions at different forums but I like to hear more than one answer and suggestion. Not everyone goes to both forums....

Thanks for the help,
Bonnie

You need to find a different cultivar other than the Ayres to cross pollinate your tree. Usually one that is reported to have the same bloom time will be ok. The blooms need to be open at the same time of year to be able to successfully pollinate each other.

Some pear trees will produce fruit without a pollinator, but will produce more fruit with one.
