Heaving is caused by alternating freezing & thawing of the soil. Here where we grow rocks, we can place one on top of the rhizome to hold it down. If they aren't available (DD lives on Lake Erie lake plain) try a brick.

Rocks are good. Although I didn't do it last year, I've also placed Christmas tree boughs over my irises, and that did a good job of reducing heaving... just be sure to remove them before the spring rains start.

We have our regular pine needle mulch, Christmas trees are over the seedling boxes in case a silly seed germinates.
