Cryptic Gardening #4
Well.
Kat is in the kitchen. How about cooking some puzzles?
" the best known traitor & a woody plant" not a real cryptic just a puzzle.
Stake - I'm guessing Gardengal was right 'cause I can't find a plant containing "Benedict Arnold"
Bedtime thoughts -
Policewoman Rosalyn's mother. - Genus
No tea when you feel remorse. - Species
Evergreen Shrub.
Cheers
Budgie
or a little harder -
Go animal! - Genus
A thousand dollars of plants - Species
Steve
Gardengal is right, I think that Judas is just slightly better known.
Brought this down from higher up. A cryptic for anyone so inclined. "Slow moving, ape, precedes the Liquid movement hesitates" Common name of a low growing native.
Now I will see if I can solve Budgieman's.
Regards Brian
Wait Stake.
Here is another.
'Overseas male therefore declared his sexuality to Mrs Diller'
Will come back to the Homer Simpson puzzle. (He's a slow moving ape)
Budgieman
G'Day Budgieman. I reckon this 'Overseas male therefore declared his sexuality to Mrs Diller'
is Osmanthus heterophylla.
Now back upto the others.
Brian
I can see how you got the answer, but what is it?
Now your getting rough, not only do we need an answer but also have to give a description. I bet Budgieman is not that tough. Some of the genus is known as "Sweet Olives" and they are related to the olive being in the same family Oleacae.
I nearly forgot it's a sweet smelling shrub that needs acid soil.
Brian
Well done Stake.
Correct on all counts.
Has a Holly type leaf and is a tough shrub.
Thought the other easier ones would have gone by now.
After all - what do we Aussies call a thousand dollars?
Will have a stab at the Homer Simpson puzzle after paying bills and sending emails.
Cheers
Budgie
Been looking at this without any luck.
Go animal! - Genus
A thousand dollars of plants - Species
Steve
Where I've been Genus. Shoo cat or dog or cow and lots of other animals, instead of Shoo, Scat or Scram.
Species only Grand with flora being the most likely but without the first bit not much good.
With the other I assume the police women is in a TV program and I don't watch much other than the news so I was waiting for Alistair on that.
Brian
Stake - You are there with the Species - grandiflora.
Go animal may be mixed up.
On the other - not a tv show but a policewoman and a woman's name.
(both are there) Maybe a 'PolicePerson' may help. i.e. collective name
Cheers
Steve
Gotim, Thanks for the extra clues. "Magnolia grandiflora" still got to work on the copper one.
Brian
Got this down so I can return the favour. That is a good idea of yours to list the Genus and Species separately.
"Slow moving, ape, precedes the Liquid movement hesitates" Common name of a low growing native.
Does it help if I tell you that the "Ape" is a "Monkey"?
Brian
Hey all.
The prompting does help. I think if a puzzle is there more than a two days then some extra
clues may be in order. Got to tell you Stake that I don't have much brain power left when I get
home. Working long days. So the ape = monkey bit will help but not now. I am intrigued more
by the liquid movement (wave?).
Cheers
Steve
p.s. you have the first three letters of the Policewoman one in your 10.58pm post
Budgieman. by the liquid movement (wave?). No! flow.
Brian
Ok Stake. I guess we are talking Monkey Flower - Mimulus
I was thrown a little by the 'Slow Moving' bit. Have you heard the saying ' went ape s..t'.
The monkeys I know go 'ape s..t' or sing 'Last Train to Clarksville'
I was thinking Sloth and the like. All makes sense now!
No answer on the Policewoman one so here it is.
Policewoman Rosalyn's mother. - Genus = Cop Ros Ma
No tea when you feel remorse. - Species = Feel remorse = repent = no tea = repen
Evergreen Shrub.
= Coprosma repens
Cheers
Budgie
I'm glad you finally solved it! I reckon you had inside information though, he, he. Jeeze the lid on this wine bottle is tight!
Easy one for bed -
Annual musical instrument
Genus and Common name.
Good night all
Budgie
G'Day Budgieman, You got it the common name is "Creeping Monkey Flower" the liquid movement is "Flow" and hesitate "er". Mimulus repens and I made no headway with your's because I was regret(ing) not repenting and I could get no further than cop with the genus.
Brian
Yearly guitar
Hey weed woman. Let me help you with that.
Ooops better not. Had enough.
Another bedtime one as simple as the other:
Annual Celebrity Cook
Genus and common name same
Cheers
Steve
ps did have inside info but can't reveal my source!
Waaaahhhh! I can't even do the easy ones! Must be time to go flap my angel wings!
* gulp, gulp* just finishing my wine! *BUUUUURP* ups, squooose me!
Weed woman - just googled annual string and got g-string. Are you leading us astray???
ROTFLMAO! whoopsh, shpilled me grappa!
I've made up another jumbled names, these are all well known flower plants.
1/ Esors
2/ Tanracnoi
3/ Adlahi
4/ Smoocs
5/ Sediesa
6/ Curlainun
7/ Dichros
8/ Senomnea
9/ Synap
10/ Loidgial
Hope I have that right this time.
And here is a cryptic. The Genus Sounds like "A Thread for the Holiday period"
Species. Sounds like "This Group is Very Cold"
This Group is Very Cold - Going Gelidium on this one.
Do I get any points?
Steve
"A Thread for the Holiday period"
Cotoneaster?
I'm on FIRE!!!
Budgie
Weedwoman you shpelled whoopsh wrong. It's whoopsh.
Budgie
Hey Budgieman are your plants annuals or is that the cryptic genus?
Brian
Genus is right Budgieman but species isn't. In fact if that is a species I've just learnt a new one.
Brian
Googled - Guitar Annual Plant and got Robert Plant.
He and Jimmy Page are on the wall looking down at me even as I type!
Bought a black and white framed photo of Led Zep in Sydney 1972 a few years ago.
Best hundred I've ever spent.
Now back to puzzles
Budgie
Which one Stake?
And yes both mine annuals
Me
Annual musical instrument
Genus and Common name.
Annual Celebrity Cook
Genus and common name same.
Both these have annual as the first word. I was asking, is the word annual the cryptic clue or are they both annuals and the word has nothing to do with the cryptic puzzle.
Brian

Aha! Now that would make a difference , right?
Whoopsh looks just like whoopsh to me. Slid down the hallway to bed, I did!
I bought a Led Zep T-shirt at the reject shop for $7 last year! Its a black one with blue and white printing. They were boys T's, but I fit into the large! Bonus!. I got a Jimmy Hendrix one also. Its a black t with orange and white printing, with Jimmy on a harley.
Is the musical instrument a wind, percussion, or ............ instrument? (fill in blank)
I like doing sudoku's. Can we have some of those? Also Backgammon, do you have a board? We can use mine!
Hey you two your supposed to taste and savour my wines not guzzle them because they can make you a bit tiddly if you hadn't noticed.
Brian
Hey Weed woman - looks like you and I would get along!!
Would love either the Led Zep or Jimmi t-shirts. Got my son interested
in Jimmi at an early age. He now says there is no guitarist as good. (Pat is 21)
String instrument.
Stake - Annual = annual
Slight variation on usual by giving a one word type and one word common.
Genus and common means the the same word.
i.e. cotoneaster genus and common name.
Cheers
Budgie
Thanks for the help does this? "Annual musical instrument" = Viola. and
Annual Celebrity Cook = Nigella
Brian

Just brought this lot down.

And here is a cryptic. The Genus Sounds like "A Thread for the Holiday period"
Species. Sounds like "This Group is Very Cold"
Budgieman got the Genus of the cryptic "Cotoneaster" and the species is "frigid - us"
Correct on both Stake.
First one on your list Roses.
Dinner time. Back later
Budgie
Annual named after a German physician and botanist
(check out the twenty sixth letter of the alphabet)
Cheers
Budgie
