I saw this plant along road at the time it was flowering, and I asked on here if joe pye weed was on Wisconsin roadsides. Someone said yes. So Once the blooms dried I went and got some. I am not so sure they are Joe Pye? As i recieved some from someone last week and They are simular but not the same. these blooms were a dark purple about 3 foot tall in a wet area. I thought they were pretty. So I am going to plant some just to see. If anyone else wants some of this you can have some for sase. Like i said i am not sure what it is. if not joe pye it resembles it , are these different variety's of Joe Pye?

I went to above to see a pic. it looked the same so maybe it is Joe Pye? I see there also it does come in a pink. Also the leaves are the same.

roadside seeds
It looks like swamp Milkweed. Is that a type of Joe Pye weed?
here's a good upclose shot of Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata): http://www.oardc.ohio-state.edu/beelab/garden/swamp.html
And here it is in PoppySue's garden: http://davesgarden.com/plants/go/539.html
Here's a photo of Joe-Pye Weed (Eupatorium spp) http://www3.sympatico.ca/don.johnson/joe_pye.html
And here it is in Joy's garden: http://davesgarden.com/plants/go/1430.html
Even though these plants do share more than a passing resemblance in their flowers, they are not the same genus. (duh, family yes, genus no :)
Whatever you photographed, it is very pretty :)

well i have looked at all the pictures and I am still not sure what is is, but i think i will try to grow some as it has to be one of the two! It sounds as if it would be a well behaved plant. thank you all for the help! :)
midwestsnowbird, and also anyone with swamp milkweed....I would like to trade for your seeds of these plants!!
about the trade.....would nice fresh bachelor buttons in blue, purple, pink, and white be okay in trade?
Bach. Buttons would be great send address please. if anyone else wants some just holler!
Are you sure this is not purple loosetrife? BEautiful, but a real bad boy...Elvis
Elvis, I don't think it's purple loosestrife - seen the bad boy up close and personal :)
From the seeds, I'd guess it's a Eupatorium - they look the same as some other Eupatorium seeds I have. But stay tuned, and we'll see what happens next year!
They are all gone now. Kept me a batch and thats all i have for now. thank you all. :)
The link wouldn't come up for me but could it possibly be Ironweed a type of veronica?
