Plant Fruit (Peach) Trees in Fall? Prudent?

Sterling, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi, would most appreciate your advice. My son-in-law, (a MA resident and new to planting fruit trees) wants to plant Peach trees now (it's Oct.), however, I didn't think they would survive the nasty MA winters. Any suggestions - Wait until spring?

Fall is a good planting time in New Mexico where our winters are pretty tough. During the cold weather the roots can put their energy into growing rather than feeding leaves. On the other hand the mountainous part of New Mexico is different than Massachucetts so I can't say what is right for your son.

When I order new trees, they always say fall is the best time to plant in Zone 6 and warmer, but they try to discourage me from fall planting here in Zone 5b.

Still, I have done it successfully on occasion.

I am in zone 5a and always plant in the fall if I can.

Thank You for your responses. :o)

I believe he's in zone 5, but I'll give it a try.
