Grape vine questions

Steubenville, OH

We will soon have an 8 ft. deer fence surrounding our new fruit orchard. I was wondering if I could grow grape vines using the fence for a trellis. Also, is the fall a good time for planting new grape vines? (Early November is when they'd be shipped to me.)

Any fence makes a good trellis. The usual story is fall is good for planting in zones 6+ and not in 5-. I think the reason is that there is enough time when the soil is not frozen in 6+ that you will get some good root growth which will make it better. In 5- they may just sit there in frozen dirt. I would say if you are in zone 5 just do what is most convenient for you.

Does that go for fruit trees too? I was going to plant some more in Nov.

Yes, fruit trees are best planted in the fall. It gives them time to get their roots established and even get some root growth over the winter. This will cause them to grow better next yr. and better withstand any dry spells.

A lot of places will discourage people from fall planting in Zone 5 and colder.
