Searching for names of Irises from 1925-1945

Allentown, NJ(Zone 6b)

I recently purchased a home built in 1925 and right now have about 150 irises. I would like to plant irises that would have been available during the early period of the home.
Is there anywhere I could get a list of some kind so I can start looking?
Thanks ahead

Try the American Iris Society - if they dont know they can maybe point you to a source.

Join the Historic Iris Preservation Society. They are the authority on historic irises and can help you identify and locate irises that are appropriate for your needs.

Mare200, The American iris society publishes books with listings of irises registered in each year. There is a book for the 1930s. I agree with LAURIEF that the Historic Preservation Iris society (HIPPS) is a good start. The problem is finding a lot of the iris cultivars from the distant past. HIPPS usually has a list of historic irises that are donated by members to be sold to others. The definition of a historic iris is opne that was introduced 30 years ago, I think. That means that the introductions from the seventies are becoming eligible to become historics.

If you go through the American Iris Society website (www.irises.org) and go to links and then commercial links, there are several suppliers that offer historic iris that you might like. Good luck!

I am trying to find historic iris also. I went to the suppliers listed at the HIPS site, then go to their lists and scan down to find the dates. It takes a lot of time, but I hope to have a list eventually for selecting the iris.

Don't forget - a historical note - iris lovers in a 1925 house would have had all the great previous iris not just the 1925+ ones.

I found quite a few historics at this site. Also, Iris City in Nashville is a good source.

The iris in catalogs always have the breeder and the date, so the historics are easy to spot.

The Historical Iris Society is your best bet. If you join, you can access the databank which has all of the names, hybridizers and dates, it is perfect, also look at the photos. Good Luck, there are soo many, and soo many that have been lost.

C & T Iris Patch has some interesting "oldies" also. Found them on a link from Blissful's website.

Try both Superstion gardens ( their site is a commuity.webshots.com/user/rickt103) and try Argyle Acres (argyleacres.com). parenthesis mine in both cases.

Thank you one and all.
I have been a member of HIPS for years. Just recently their site is much friendlier and they have more pictures etc. I have many historics (can one ever have enough?)
I have been buying from them for a few years now but the last two orders were very dry and oh so small. Need to "nursery" them for the first and sometimes second year. I know it is hard when they come from all over the country though.
THanks again everyone
