Praying Mantids

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I had a cool surprise this morning -- a praying mantis walking across the glass on our front door! It's the first one I've seen since year before last; this one was really big, too, about 6" long, I'd say. I have pictures in the photo forum if you'd like to see them: http://davesgarden.com/showthread/86566.html & http://davesgarden.com/showthread/86571.html

They are so creepy, but so neat. They really look intelligent and aware of things - the way they cock their heads and check you out. They're fascinating garden helpers!

Great photos Kimberley!! I remember these in Singapore (that's twice I've mentioned that country today) - anyway - they were fascinating and so brave - almost held up their front legs to box away intruders!!

When I first saw him, I thought I'd grasp him gently around his abdomen, a safe distance from his front end. Nomatter, he just twisted right around and grabbed my fingers with those prickly front legs. And I lost it! LOL I shrieked and put him right back on the front door and got a jar instead (I just HAD to bring him inside to show Howard before I put him back outside). I don't think they bite -- but just the sensation of those legs...*shudder*

ROFL - that's my gal!!! You are a braver than I am!

Hey GW, I'm jealous!! LOL ! I haven't seen a praying Mantis around here in about 8 yrs!! Got plenty of creepy-crawlers around, But, No praying Mantis! Well, At least I get to see a pic of yours .... Thank's for sharing ~ Great photo's!

A few years back, my kids brought in a "cool pod" left it in a glass on top of the bread box.. we all forgot about it... Until a couple of months later when I walked in my kitchen to see my counter moving! There were 100's of baby preying manthis everywhere. It took hours to get them all outside.
