Most Fragrant and Longest bloomer Survey???

Peachtree City, GA(Zone 7b)

Please list your top 3 most Fragrant lilies and which ones bloom the longest for you.
Please tell me what kind of lily it is. Asiatic or Oriental etc. I dont have too much experience with them and need enough info to look them up.
I want to order fragrant ones from the fall coop so I am trying to do the research now.
Also, which is the shortest variety you have seen?

Thanks,
chris

Any Orientals will be wonderfully fragrant, as are trumpets (easter lily type) and next in line is an oriental - trumpet cross. Asiatics are not fragrant.

There are several "pixie" (short) lilies which are asiatics but there are a few shorter orientals like Muscadet.

Chris - I had Dwarf Farolito orientals that bloomed early and smelled heavenly. Now we have some Angeliques that are in full bloom and are also wonderfully fragrant. I think those smaller ones do better for me. I have a yellow one opening now but can't remember what it is (also oriental); I'll have to look it up.

Here's the dwarf farolito when it was just getting started. It bloomed for a very long time, withstood winds and droughts, and did great in a pot.

Thanks Jo.

Do you leave them in there pots overwinter? I leave my asiatics in ground and they do great. I am going to leave the orientals that I just ordered in ground also. I never thought of growing them in pots, because pots have to be watered so often and they would get neglected. If I could leave them right by the back door of the house they would probably get watered more often. I dont want to bring pots in though. Will they make it through the winter in the pots?

My Stargazers do fine overwintering in large pots. I try to move them close together in a sheltered area against the house or deck and they don't seem to have any problems. Here is Angelique (first year).. Love the big ones but am starting to get addicted to the Dwarfs. I have another one (yellow... can't remember what it is!) just starting now.

I think dwarfs would be great in a pot. Right by the door.
Well that one is beautiful, and now its on my gotta have list.
I hope Angelique will be in one of the next coops.

Dallas, GA(Zone 7b)

It was in one of the coops this year, Chris.. Can't remember which one tho.
I'm waiting for this small yellow one to fully open. Aubrade (or something).. also from co-op.
jo

P.S. There are lots of dwarf asiatics too and they're beautiful. Not aromatic but they bloom earlier.

Peachtree City, GA(Zone 7b)

I have lots of asiatics, now I am going for the smell factor.
I ordered a bunch of orientals from the Kathys coop that just closed.
I am hoping to smell up the entire yard. LOL

Mona Lisa is short, the earliest Oriental to bloom and smells wonderful. Muscadet and Casablanca would be high on my list but I do love them all.

This one, Red Hot Lily, from Dutch Gardens, bloomed last year and it's more gorgeous than the photo of it online and it smells so wonderful.

For me, Silk Road is both the most fragrant and longest blooming. I have had blooms on my Silk Roads from June 1 through today and still have a couple more days left in them. S.R is an Oriental/Trumpet hybrid.

Peachtree City, GA(Zone 7b)

All of you have given me some great info. I will need some asiatics for the short ones
and also some dwarf orientals.
I need to get Orientals or Trumpets or Orienpet, which I guess is the cross between the 2.
I hope all the ones you named are in the coop because I will order them all. LOL

So far I need...
Muscadet (short)
Dwarf farolito(early)
angelique
Mona lisa (short and early)
casablanca
Red hot lily
Silk Road (long bloomer)

If you think of more, keep them coming.
Thanks

I'm calling the Lily Elder Abuse Hotline and reporting you people! And you, Moby, once again you're responsible with that link to B & D Lilies where I saw the "Long Island" lily! Sure, tell me you're innocent! I've heard that one before. Is "lead us not into temptation" a stranger to you?

Peachtree City, GA(Zone 7b)

Writing down notes about Mags! ^_^
I think you all sound like you would join in the fun, making sure the checkbook stays in a drought due to mass lily purchases.
Has anyone ever done a coop with any of these companies?
When would be the best time to order from them?

Peachtree City, GA(Zone 7b)

dang, gotta go look up "Long Island lily"

guess I gotta have this one, just cause of the name. Usually any reason will do, but this one is actually good. http://store.yahoo.com/snowcreek/l9407.html

See there you go proof! Just look at that Long Island. I can see I've been staying away from the lily sites too long!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Me, too!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I should NOT have opened this thread. I didn't have links to any of the lily sites. My DH just spent $500 on something that I consider a waste of money so ... now it's my turn, right. Isn't that the way it works?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Oohhh yeah, and then some!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

And look what happens when I am not looking?!?! I get blamed for all sorts of stuff.

All I do is innocently place links, I mean, did I make you click on it? Why of course not. I would NEVER subject you to such things.

Oh and 'Long Island'...just about ready to bloom here ;) Can't wait! Nah-nah. boo boo.

Did someone out there say enabler. I think not . Lol!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I'll be eagerly awaiting the photos!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

The pictures really show it to be gorgeous, don't they? The LOs really grow well here, far better than the orientals, and they seem to multiply at a good clip too. It seems that, after talking with a grower, some parts of the country simply have better success than other places, growing different varieties. He said it was one of their greatest challenges. What may grow well in the Northwest may not grow as well here, and vise versa.

So I guess one can only select what they are drawn to and hope for the best. That's half the fun.

I'm new to Dave's Garden, greetings, all. I've grown mainly fragrant taller varieties. Lilies are most fragrant at dusk, so they'll really get you outside on a warm summer evening. "Rubrum" lilies (Lilium speciosum rubrum, and its white variant, L. s. album) bloom quite late and are shorter, with a more delicate look and a sweet scent; you could grow them in a large pot. (I overwinter lilies in their pots in an unheated garage after they go dormant.) "Casa Blanca" is very reliable, strong in every way, including its delicious scent, with dramatic blooms, beautiful even in the closed bud stage, amazing when they open. I'd also like to put in a word for the graceful older trumpet-shaped lilies, especially Lilium regale and its all-white counterpart, Lilium regale album, which have a jasmine-like, wafting scent; these get pretty tall. By making a collection of trumpets, Orienpets, Orientals and rubrums, you can have that evening scent in all its variations over an extended period. I'm dying to try "Silk Road," and am glad to hear of its good qualities. Sorry to have gone on so long, but you've hit an enthusiasm nerve here. Thank you for the lovely pictures, a real treat. "Red Hot" is another that I think I must have. See what all this leads to.
