Wedding Frills is one I've grown for a long time and have multiple clumps of. I like the little white ruffle around the edges.

MrsJ, That's some pretty cool coloring on Sunny Disposition.

Dan, I love the horns on that seedling. The coloring on the falls is so light/delicate that the color of the beard/horn really stands out.

Susan, Wedding Frills is a beauty; I can see why you have multiple clumps.

daltri_z5... Thanks for your compliments on my seedling 04-34b. I always appreciate the opinion of others (good or bad) on my seedlings.

Dan, how long does it take iris to bloom from a seed? I have some pods on Dusky Challenger, Immortality, Can Can Red. Do I let them develop a few more weeks and then plant?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi bluegrasssmom,

It will be a minimum of about 16 months before you could expect to see an iris bloom from seed. Under optimal conditions, seeds harvested this summer and planted in early winter will sprout in early spring, grow strongly through the summer and a few will bloom the next spring. Most will bloom the following year, or about 28 months.

Let the pods you have now continue to develop until they turn brown and begin to split open. As they begin to turn yellow and seem to be drying, watch very closely. Once they begin to brown they may split open and drop the seeds, so cut the stems and bring them in at the first sign of the pod opening.

Here's some much more thorough info, including pictures, on watching those pods and planting the seeds.

Good Luck, I hope you get some really nice seedlings from your crop of seeds.

irisloverdee, great looking horns. Are the flounces the other things that look like horns? Sorry to be so dumb. Just not familiar with that term.

Susan,

I hope I played a small part in encouraging you to try hybridizing. You won't regret it. If I can be of any help please feel free to send me a d-mail.

Thanks for the comments about my seedlings, Dan
