ON SAFARI.

Klamath River, CA

starlight1153.......just missed two bucks in the back yard. They're too far into the trees at this time for any chance of a pic, but maybe they'll wander back out later.

If you look close you can see one of them looking at the camera.

While doing some birding yesterday I suddenly...............

realized I was hearing the gnashing of teeth.

I looked around and saw that I was surrounded by voracious carnivores that were closing in on me.

I make it a habit when I'm out in the wilds to stay near my vehicle,

so I was able to leap back into my pick up and speed away, once again averting certain death. I don't know how much longer my neves will let me keep going on these dangerous Safaris.

This is almost too scarey to read any more.

For real.. Got me a pillow to hide behind for the scarey parts. : ) Sure enjoying this safari. I love to live dangerously. hehehehehe

Ok, now fo rthe dumb question. I take that is some sort of squirrel, but it not like any I have seen before. Looks do different from th eone sin my area. Ya know what kind it is?

Klamath River, CA

They are ground squirrels. They live in holes in the ground like a gopher.

(to be precise, they are California ground squirrels)

They aren't nearly as pretty as tree squirrels, and my father fought them for years because of the holes they left on our property-mostly where us children loved to run around-but they do have one thing special going for them. They are about the only prey species to defy and outwit rattlesnakes. They are partially immune to the poison and live in colonies so when a snake shows up several will take on the snake with quick movements and others will hurry into the den to move the pups. Rather amazing when you think about it. Dotti

They do leave a lot of holes.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Neat... I learned something new.

If they outwit rattle snakes, I think that what I need here. Maybe they would help get rid of some of them aroudn here. Bought sent my car into the ditch yesterday on the way to the corner store. Had a huge diamondback laying across the road sunning himself.

Decided to do a little fishing at one of our local lakes. Didn't get any fish, but on the way saw this buck.

Shortly after arriving at the lake the BEASTIES started their encompassing maneuver again.

They even sent out the UDT team, so I packed up and came back home.

DH has seen a doe in front of our house a couple mornings this week...he made the comment "that is a nice way to start the day".

Klamath River, CA

It's really getting bad now, it's not safe even on the front steps.
