I need a list of some of the smallest blooming and non-blooming alpines.
The tinier the better lol.
Any tiny plnts will do.
Know any good websites?
Thanks guys!
Needed-Tiny Alpines.
Coming to mind are:
- Primula mistassinica
- Sedum hispanicum
- Sedum debile
- Sempervivum arachnoides 'Minus'
- Iris reichenbachii (if you get a smaller growing form, I have some with leaves 1.25", and one with leaves 4")
Thanks! I'll be looking these up. I want some Asperula gussonei too, lol.So neat these tinies!
How about draba?
Ohhh thank you! Ive added them to my want list lol.
Here is a great book:
Rock Garden Plants: A Color Encyclopedia by Baldassare Mineo and Fritz Kummert (Hardcover - Dec 1999)
It will give you many suggestions and you should be able to get it through your local library or at a botanical garden library.
or amazon! LOL
Ill look this book up, thank you very much!
A good book, but not necessarily for just the tiny alpines. Has a lot of good pics, but they don't have a lot of detail for identification purposes.
Oh that book is pure eye candy. I drooled over it many times before finally putting it away.
I may just pull it out again to look at... gorgeous pictures.
Wild Lingonberry -Vaccinium vitis-ideae minus fruits twice 6 inches
Ameria grasslike 4 inches, clover like blooms 1 to 2 inches higher
Conifers - When dinosaurs ate them they were prostrate. Most are upright now, but nearly all have prostrate cultivars.
Azalea Pink Pancake 4"
Ohh thanks, Ill check these out!
If you want the absolute smallest flowering plant it is Lemna. It is a duckweed relative. It has one root and one leaf, rather than two.
Thats so pretty golden!
They don't have to be alpines.
I am looking for plants for underplanting my bonsai.
Ill keep the lemna in mind for any tiny ponds I create in my penjin Uallace, thanks yall!!
Ah, for underplanting a bonsai, a tiny-leaved, low-growing thyme might be very nice. Thyme 'Minus' is slow-growing, but has tiny leaves and is very low to the ground (1/2" or so). It blooms (purplish-red) when it gets enough water, but endures drier conditions well. It would be very nice in place of moss.
Ill look that thyme up too. Thanks so much.
I should have been clearer with my original post I guess lol. I was having a duh moment LOL.
For underplanting, this has got to be the best all time tiny plant:
Corsican mint (Mentha requenii) It smells of crème de menthe!
It's an annual for me, but it should be perennial for you. And it is as tiny as the tiniest thyme there is. And it still has tiny blooms too.
OMG I have to get that plant!! LOL
So pretttttttty and dainty!!
They have nearly all of the mints. Click on 'M'.

Should the genus 'Mentha' have even one capital letter, even when the plant is minuscule?
ohh wow, thanks for the link!
Im getting lots of ideas from you guys, thanks so much.
Aren't tiny plants amazing?
This is interesting becasue sometimes you buy alpine plants expecting them to stay small and then they grow big! LOL That happened to me with daphne retusa which is now about 24 inces across! Good luck with your hunting.
The hunt is half the fun! LOL
Man, plants are exciting!
Im constantly looking for weeds growing in the lawn, I found that if you restrict and abuse creeping charlie it keeps tiny leaves and still blooms beautifully!
Must be the Japanese?
GASP!!! :O
I got mine at a plant fair in Lancaster, PA a couple weeks ago. Maybe if you google them, you could find somebody selling them online.
