I've tried them inside on flats and in MiracleGrow seed starting mix (damp not wet), and outside in those milk jugs. In all cases, the seeds would sprout and about a week later the node between the two starter leaves turns brown and they're dead a few days later.
Help!
Problems with Alyssum
I started out doing seeds in the house under lights. Then one year decided to direct sow. I like alyssum as a border. So now I just scratch the dirt in the border and sprinkle the seed, they catch up fast and I get a nice full border. Saves a lot of work. You could probably direct sow now as you are in a higher zone then I am.
But if you want instant border, then starting seeds, or buying plants is what you must do.
Wonder if your seedling suffered Damp-off?
I have too many weeds in that area for direct sowing, maybe in about 4 years, that's how long it took me to tame the front yard.
sigh
I'll just have to buy the live plants
