How many Apple trees per 1/4 acre

Triad(for a few more, NC(Zone 7a)

Hi,
We have recently cleared an area of our land that is almost 1 acre so to be conservative I will say 3/4. We want to plant about 20 grape vines for wine next Spring on about 1/2 of the space. On the other side we would like to palnt apple trees. How many apple trees can we put on about 1/4-1/2 an acre?

I have chosen a Mac, a Golden Delicious, 2 Gala and one Red Delicious. I found a online place to buy them that has 100% positive ratings on Watchdog and I am assuming they are standard size trees, not dwarf.

Thanks for the help.

A quarter of an acre is 70 ft x 70 ft. Full size trees need about 20 ft each way. With overlap and good pruning practices, a dozen or so trees. Semi- dwarfs are the better choice as dwarfs tend to be brittle. But each type requires less spacing.

I have both full sized and semi-dwarf trees. The semi-dwarf are plenty big. The dwarf require sturdy staking as the wind will blow them over otherwise. Still, the smaller would give you more numbers and variety.
I think you have some good choices so far.........My Red Delicious in the fridge in January are tops in flavor to me.

.. I would reccomend starting with reliable cultivars first before trying exotic heirlooms as they could be more fickle.

I think a general rule of thumb is: 20x20 feet for full sizes; 15x15 for semi-dwarf; and 10x10 for dwarf.
