Anyone know of any native plant nurseries, or nurseries that specialize in heirlooms in Southern Virginia or Northern North Carolina? I would also be interested in any gardens that have occasional sales. I am still pretty new to the area here and haven't yet found "the loop".....
Thanks,
Kyrina
Virginia Native Plant Nurseries??
There's an excellent list in the link I posted here.

The Virginia Native Plants Society webpage would be another good source. Their local chapters' plant sales are a great source of Virginia native plants at reasonable prices.

Here's the local chapters.

Thank you very much for this link. I really appreciate the info. I hope that I can find some to visit...it seems as though some nurseries are going internet only which is good for them, I'm sure, but not good for me...I love to wander through a new nursery!!!
Anyone have any favorites?

Did you know there's a native plant forum here? A lot of people have posted photos and info on the ones they're growing.
I would urge you to go to the native plant society sale nearest you. They're all plants that have been grown by members in Virginia gardens. They're usually nicer plants than you would get from a commercial source too. And the folks will be glad to tell you what does well in your area.
I buy mine at the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News. They have sales twice a year. They also have nurseries in Williamsburg that bring plants down, but I don't know their names, sorry!
Laura
Hi Laura,
Please post when you hear of the sale...I make it up that way from time to time and I think tat would make a great field trip!! I will also see if they have an online schedule. Thanks for your reply...

You can start planning your trip, they announce the sales early. Looks like two sale weekends for spring. There is usually a fall sale too.
On the web site below, they provide a list of plants anticipated for sale, but there are often vendors from other places that bring their plants in addition to what the gardeners at the VLM have grown from seeds.
The plants are usually small, but there are always a few gallon or larger shrubs and trees. The seedlings are often in 4" pots. I have a snowball viburnum, that was a small twig, and is now over 6 feet around, along with some other plants, including a wild indigo, some columbines, and a couple others.

Another good place for native plants is up at Monticello.
