San Diego Zoo Palms

Garden Grove, CA(Zone 10a)

I went to the Zoo last weekend. I took as many photos as I could without getting left behind from my party of 6. Unfortunately, I could only snap 1 photo of the awesome cycad collection. I also don't know cycads well enough to know which one were the least common (beyond the Queen Sago). I even managed to see the animals too.

First photo is of a Dypsis utilis. They are known to branch.

I love the recurvature of this palmate leaf. I think it's a Sabal Palm. (not the same species as the S. bermudana)

Looks like that common cycad, but it sure is beautiful.

A tall Dypsis leptocheilos also know as the Teddy Bear Palm in the background. Look at the nice white trunk and the red, fuzzy crownshaft.

Thanks for posting. :)

The Dictyosperma is one of the nicest you will find in SoCal. These are hard to make look good here.

The plant you asked about is an aloe barberae.

Weblnt, here is a slightly closer photo of the Dictyosperma's crown and crownshaft. It was in afternoon shade.

your succulent is a tree aloe, probably a sad Aloe barberae (aka bainsii). Nice Encephalartos shot. Almost worth driving all the way down there just to get a few photos of that myself.

I wasn't expecting this visitor. I knew what it was when I saw it. It was not identified with a sign.

This palm was an amazing sight. Look at how it curves. It looks like a Washingtonia robusta, but I don't know for sure.

you last two photos show a palm with a bamboo culm right in the middle... that is not a palm leaf spear

Garden Grove, CA(Zone 10a)

I actually thought of that, but I it looked like part of the palm crown. I didn't even see bamboo from where I was.
