We are looking for a safe, fenced-in place where a horse can be transferred between trailers on a trip from NY to GA. The Roanoke area would be the approximate half-way point. Is there anyone here who has the facilities to accommodate such a change over?

Roanoke, VA Vicinity Farm Owners - Need Help
Thanks wrightie for posting this.
She will be traveling (hopefully) down I 81
Good luck Jen!! I have my fingers crossed for you!
Interstate 81 to 95, I would imagine. Right, Jen?
95 is alot further east than we need to go. I mapquested it and 81 took us right in to Roanoke.
Sorry, I meant that you would *eventually* pick up 95, no?
I figure that there might be someone who can help that is outside of the Roanoke area, so it might be a good idea to post the general route in case someone else can jump in.
I think my reply came across as rude after rereading it. I'm sorry, that was not my intention.
According to mapquest, it looks like once 81 is picked up its almost a 300 mile straight shot into Roanoke. I'm not familiar with the towns north or south of there.
These directions pick it up at step 19, lol. There are a whole buncha 2 lanes that have to be traveled in order to get to 81. I think Bill said that 95 is about 100 miles east of 81.
: Merge onto I-81 S toward CARLISLE (Passing through MARYLAND and WEST VIRGINIA- then crossing into VIRGINIA). 286.0 miles Map
20: Merge onto I-581 S / US-220 S via EXIT 143 on the LEFT toward AIRPORT / ROANOKE. 5.8 miles Map
21: Merge onto US-11 S / US-220 BR S / US-221 S / WILLIAMSON RD NE / VA-116 S via EXIT 5 toward DOWNTOWN. 0.4 miles Map
22: Turn RIGHT onto SALEM AVE SE / US-11. 0.1 miles Map
23: Turn LEFT onto US-220 BR / S JEFFERSON ST / VA-116.
It wasn't rude at all!

Whew, lol
I didn't think it was rude either. :~)
I used to live in Roanoke.. You do not want to go downtown if you can help it.. I think it is exit 4 or 5 (you go left which is away from downtown) that will take you to a place where they show horses. I have not been down there in a few years, but there used to be a lot of horse places and very friendly people..
Thanks, Jenn. Do you think that that is a *public* horse show venue?
Is there another town at exit 4 or 5 that I can start looking for a place? Is it north of roanoke?
Thanks for the info on downtown,
jen
Here is a list of equestrian centers in that area, but I have no idea if they would be of use: http://www.swvada.org/web/directions.html

Jen
It was over in Vinton VA... I have tried to google it but I cannot find it.. I wonder if it has shut down. If you can find a horse club down there someone may just let you use their farm. If I spoke to my ex-husband I would ask him but that would not work..
I will keep looking
JustJen, just saw this - both of the facilities in the Lexington area, about 45 min north of Roanoke sound good for you. The Virginia Horse Center is really easy to get to right off I-81 and no traffic. Fancy Hill Farm is easy as well, would be a couple exits after the Virginia Horse Center.
If neither of these facilities could help you, I'm sure they could refer you to someone in the area. Good luck!
Debbie
Sweet! Being so close to 81 is going to be a huge plus. Do you have the numbers for them or can I google it?
Yikes, I'm sorry - I didn't realize the number for the Horse Center wasn't listed in the link wrightie posted above :( Let me look it up, but in the meantime, Fancy Hill is 540-291-1000. At least I'm hoping that's what it is, it was recently purchased by a group of three women and I'm hoping they didn't change the number......okay, the "main" number listed for VA Horse Center is 540-464-2950.
Here's the link for VA Horse Center http://www.horsecenter.org/view.asp?id=home
Looked for Fancy Hill Farm, guess they changed the name to Stone Bridge Farm, but the number IS still the same. Here's the link http://www.stonebridgefarm.net/
Let me know how what you find out, I'm hoping everything works out for you :)
Awesome! Thanks!
