Best online nursery for buying apple trees (north)

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

Where can I get a list of the best online nurseries that carry Honeycrisp apple trees?

Glen Ellyn, IL(Zone 5b)

IF you know the names of the nurseries you're interested in, you can check them out in the Garden Watchdog section here.

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

I've never bought a tree mail order before. I just wondered if there was a place here to check them out as a group that is rated or what. I don't have names. Has anyone mail ordered fruit trees before?

Glen Ellyn, IL(Zone 5b)

I recommend Raintree Nursery

Thank you very much!!!

Here is a list of fruit tree vendors in the USA that are rated in Watchdog. Since you are in the midwest, I would suggest that you try a highly rated nursery in the midwest. I would suggest avoiding the general seed companies like Gurneys, Henry Fields etc as they drop ship and have no control over the product. For me it is important to buy from a nursery that actually grows the product. I have had very good luck over the years with mailorder trees, but I have mostly ordered from Starks, Millers and Vernon Barnes.

Forgot to add the list: http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/advanced.php?state=xx&country=US&category=73&search_text=&sorter=company_name&submit=Search

Thanks Farmerdill.

After doing some searching on Google I found out there are only a certain number of nurseries that are licensed to propagate Honeycrisp apples. One of them is called Hilltop and they are located in my state. I don't know if they sell to the public or not. If not, Starks is on the list and I can order from them. I'm glad to hear you were happy with the trees you got from Starks. If this Hilltop is within driving distance of my home I may drive over there and pick out the trees in person if they are set up for that. I could save the shipping costs. If they are too far away the gasoline costs of going there might equal out. :) Hard to say the way gas keeps going up.

Here is the link in case anyone else is interested.

I've never had a problem with trees I've ordered from Stark's or Miller's, either.

Baltimore, MD

I have had problems both with Starks and Millers in terms of trees dying. Overall I would say they are both "decent", but I would say not as good as Adams County Nursery, Cummins, Raintree, the Dave Wilson retailers, etc. Hilltop is a commercial nursery. I don't think they sell to the public but it wouldn't hurt to call to find out - they are very good outfit. I still order occasionally from Starks and Millers.

I would recommend St. Lawrence Nursery in New York for Cold Weather varieties. I don't think you can order online, but I think they have a website.. But , also don't know that they have honeycrisp.. I just know they have VERY cold hardy varieties.

I have been trying to give my catalogs away as soon as I order from them.. So already gave that one away.

I bought a Honeycrisp Apple from Stark's last year -- because it was one of the few places that had them. It arrived healthy and happy and flourished all summer. I usually order from Raintree, but I think they were out of Honeycrisp when I ordered. Still they are an excellent nursery, but I got an excellent tree from Starks.

I just discovered that Bay Laurel Nursery in California also sells Honeycrisp apples. They are also a good nursery that I have used. http://www.baylaurelnursery.com/order/clicksite.cgi?cart_id=&xm=on&ftr=Apples&p=Apples

Thank you everyone. I did look at St. Lawrence Nursery online. I love their online catalog and all the descriptions of the trees. Who knew there were that many apple trees? I like that they are in a cold climate of New York too so the trees are grown under similiar conditions to where I live.

I'll look at Bay Laurel Nursery next. Thanks for the link.

Loon, there are two nurseries here in Washington State are licensed to sell Honeycrisp. And they won't gouge you on prices since they grow the trees themselves

You will have to call them to order though since they cater to the commercial growers (but they will sell to us backyard folks too)

I don't see any Honeycrisp available in VanWell's 2008 inventory, but they will have some spring of 2009.

C & O appears to have around 400 trees left on M7 for 2008 at the time of this post.

Holy cow, what a fantastic garden!! Do you know you personally responsible for making me get more apple trees now?! LOL
I was looking into crabapples, but a few more apples I can always squeeze in.
I have about 49 fruit trees in my front yard, and I have 1 fan and a lot of enemies because of it!!!

Christie,
I don't see how anyone could object to your front yard! It is lush and beautiful. Maybe you need to give them some fruit. Maybe they are just jealous! Don't let them get you down! Glad you are inspired. The fruit tree merchants mentioned on this thread are top notch and offer fascinating varieties.

I just ordered 5 apple trees at Trees of Antiquaty ( SP?)
Where o where will I plant them? Oh, I'll find room after seeing that man's yard!!!

I got awarded 2 free fruit trees for sending my garden pictures to Dave Wilson Nursery, and I get to pick 4 and they will send me 2 out of that choice.

I am coming out of my skin, real antique apples you can't find in the store; what a treat THat will be!!

Oh, I do share all my fruit with the neighbours, they like grass and neat, and I don't!!

I don't let it get to me any more. I have organic fruit to pick whenever I walk by, that is a delight!!!

Well, in that case my mistake may be appreciated! Check out the original thread I was trying to post on, you will like that one too!!

Done goofing around, I will go dream about my antique apples!!!

I received the order form from my county conservation department tree and plant sale. They had new this year the honeycrisp apple that I wanted so much for $14. I bought 5 of them and I also bought 5 Zestar apple trees for the same price. I also bought 5 hazlenut trees and 5 crabapple trees. I pick them up next month at the county fairgrounds. I've bought from them before and the trees are always nice with large root systems.
