question muscadines

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

we want to plant a self fertile muscidine plant but our thing is we havent got a well yet for water supply and have noticed the wild ones due to lack of water just didnt yield this year.

i have a tree we have been using the bath water on and it seems to love it.

will it be safe to use bath water on grapes as we are gonna eat them? or will they filter the bad stuff out on their own? thanks

Since no one else has anwered you, I will give you my opinion. I would not hesitate to use bathwater ( if you google you will find lots of discussion on grey water for plants) unless you added something detrimental to the water. Soaps, shampoos and the like no problem. Muscadines do need water to get established, but hang in there pretty well once established. Both cultivated and wild ones are doing well here this year, and there has been more rain on your side of the river than ours. In my experience they don't bear every year.

I actually get sweeter grapes in dry years. As far as the bath water I think that would work fine but once they're established they don't need much water. A saying with grapes is "they have to suffer to get good grapes". BTW you have to prune grapes since the grapes will form on new growth.

it seems my neighbors grapes are doing wonderful and mine in unwatered spot is doing terrible. like maybe 4 grapes.

must be doing something wrong.

pruned half way back like someone said too in january but nothing but 4 grapes. had nice little bunches but then nothing.

i am here in jackson like 5 minutes or so of augusta Farmerdill maybe its my soil?

Maybe, but as long as the soil is loose, they don't seem to partcicular. Have they borne before, Are they old enough? It takes them a few years to get going. Some cultivars do better than others. Even the self fertile ones benefit from cross pollination.

when i bought them they had about 5-10 on them but no more. this year they have even less. maybe it is just age. i planted them last year and they came in gallon pots and were about 5 feet long

thanks

I grew mine from seed and they started fruiting in year three. Next three years they grew more grapes and bigger grapes. It may just be the age of your vines.
