Ah - did ask the either/or question, but you answered "Yes" LOL
Which part of Germany was he from and is that where your family is now?

The seeds are loosening in the pod so I am going to net them today so as not to lose them. Once they are brown should I start them straight away or should I save them til spring as the summer is fading?
Photo taken a while ago, the seeds have shrunk and are loosening now

I heard Paul uses fish net stockings! lol

Seriously i have read so much on lotus now.. they say that they will store easily for many years possibly thousands!
They don't germinate untill they are scratched and soaked!

But remmember i can't grow them at all.

I've just bought a french water plant book and it says they need an AVERAGE of 5-6 hours strong sunshine per day in the growing season!
No wonder they are a little temperamental in Lincolnshire LOL

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Hmm we don't really do strong sunshine ever... never mind 5-6 hours.
Been asking every nursery i know in the Uk and no one has ever heard of them so i am begining to wonder if its just one of those plants that can't make it this far north.

I'm going to try again next spring hopefully i can get it big enough during the summer we should have! Not the one we got this year!!

Yes, I think a lot of people think they aren't hardy, but as long as they have a good covering of water they can survive the water over their heads getting frozen. I think it's much more a question of needing long, sunny summers.
You've tried all the water plant specialists? I'm sure you have. They probably know best LOL
Well, good luck for next year! We could all do with a better summer ;0) Though I welcomed the one here that was slightly cooler than normal and lacked the usual drought period.....

I even tried a gro light above it earlier in the year with little result. I think it was still not strong enough.

Yes, there's probably no substitute for hot sun................
:(

For me never mind the plants....

I'm giving up on the mass gardenening for now. Just growing collecting and tending the rare-er stuff and special items.

All good fun

I have my lotus ('Sunflower') in a large tub and they have survived the winter here in the US (is it OK that I throw my tuppence in here?) for several years now. Only the top freezes over for short periods here in 7b.

But ---- I need to thin and replant them. The show wasn't very good this summer. They grow so fast and fill any container to over-flowing post haste!

On the left is waterlily 'Attraction'.
