Thanks everyone. I did have a special alpine open for my birthday...Incarvillea forrestii. I grew it 2 years ago from seed and it opened on my birthday. It is truely miniature. the flowers are almost as big as mairei but the entire plant is only 9" tall! This one could work in a trough! Here is a close-up of the flower. The stem has 4 buds in total.

Happy belated, Todd! how exciting to have something you were looking forward to open on your b'day. the incarvillea is beautiful. enjoyed the aquilegias, particularly like the A. barnebyi.
i love them all, from afar. i can't quite picture an alpine garden in central florida, but i can live vicariously on this forum. debi (the wistful lurker)
