I love the look of caladiums, and I've seen them in a couple of gardens in DC, but don't they need to be dug up every fall in this area? Or don't they? Or does it just depend on how cold the winter is that year?
I am a lazy gardener (or rather I have many interests and a small child) and I am also thrifty--it pains me to buy plants that are just for one season. So no caladiums for me unless they can over-winter.

Caladiums: too high-maintenance?
Caladiums are very tender. No way they could survive outside for the winter here. You could plant them in pots, sink the pots in the ground and just lift them in the fall.
Thanks. It was a hope against hope that they might overwinter outside in a sheltered spot. Since I have a tiny house, I wouldn't have anywhere to bring them into inside. Oh, well. Caladiums will have to wait until I live somewhere bigger or warmer.

That's my problem too. I'd love to plant some too but....oh well.....
