B&Bs for Happy

Shenandoah Valley, VA

http://www.hotelstrasburg.com/direct.htm This isn't exactly a B&B but it's very charming. Click on home for a tour of the rooms, restaurant, etc.

This place is supposedly for fishermen, but I have a friend who comes up here for art classes a couple of times a year and she stays there each time and loves it. It would probably be the closest to my house.

More in Edinburg, which is the closest town.

Not a B&B, but it says this cabin sleeps 6 to 9. It must be in the southern end of Fort Valley, which would be about 10 minutes from here. Maybe if a couple of you want to share a place, this would be an option.

http://www.riverdinn.com/rooms.htm rivered in is a local term for being stranded by high river or creek waters with only a low water bridge. I guess the owner thought that was a cute coloqualism from us quaint rustics. LOL

A couple in Woodstock, which is about five miles north of Edinburg. If you stay there, don't let anybody talk you into taking Woodstock Tower Road to get to my house. The road is HORRIBLE. One car width wide, very rutted dirt road hanging on the side of the mountain with one hairpin curve immediately after the other. If you meet another car, you have to back back down the rutted hairpins while hoping not to back off the side of the mountain.

One more in Strasburg
http://www.virginia.org/site/description.asp?AttrID=31998

To give you an idea of where things are, Strasburg is north and west of here, about 30-35 minutes drive. Edinburg is south and west of here, about 20 minutes. Woodstock is just a little north of Edinburg, about 25 minutes. On a map, Woodstock is actually the closest, about 7 miles due west, but you really don't want to drive directly from there to here over that mountain. The road from Edinburg or from Strasburg is nice, two lane paved and not scary at all.

Way the heck far. Not really but not exactly close and there are much closer places to stay and much better country style restaurants around here. New Market is about 15 miles south of Edinburg.

If you want to eat in New Market, I'd strongly suggest Jalisco - excellent Mexican and very reasonable, or Southern Kitchen, one of the best country cooking restaurants in the area.

There are motels in Woodstock. The Ramada is being seriously renovated but there's a Comfort Inn. Probably not significantly cheaper than staying in a B&B, which would be much nicer.

I'm adding in camping info for Brent.

Here's info on the campgrounds in the George Washington National Forest. The one you would probably want is the Elizabeth Furnace Campground. It's not far from here and is very close to Front Royal or Strasburg if you need to run to town for something. There's also a small country store about a quarter mile from me that caters to the campers.

The Little Fort Campground is the closest to me but the only store nearby would be the little Fort Valley Store. The road to that campground is pretty darned hairy after you reach the top of the mountain, too. I'm not exaggerating. The road is fine between here and the campground but between the campground and Woodstock to the west, I'd stay off of it. It's a very, very narrow (one car width) very rough unpaved road that kind of hangs off the side of the mountain and has one extreme hairpin curve after another. If you meet another car coming in the opposite direction, you have to back down a few hairpins until you find a place wide enough to pull over.

Shenandoah County campgrounds - Edinburg and Fort Valley are closest. Fort Valley Stables are right down Fort Valley Road from me.
