We worked hard too, selling 700 lily bulbs. (No, We didn't buy them ALL ourselves....) It was fun to get together to laugh & joke around all day. I brought my friend Jackie from the CR area.
What's the Iowa emblem on a couple of yous' shirts?
And what's pictured, that thing with the structure of an Eryngium yuccafolium?
T'was St. Paddy's Day, Lefty me lad. Got me fancy society shirt dirty diggin' for praties. (or were they lily bulbs?)
what a lovely group of people
Yes ,we are, aren't we? LOL
I have really come to adoring those little recurved blooms! I never thought I'd adore something that didn't have that wonderful fragrance! They are so darn cute though!
Have never grown citronella, but bought a few last fall, just found them underneath a melted snow drift, to place the new garden marker atop of them. Oh I can't wait for lily season!
I have some (lilies) in pots just for the IARU, to share! It won't be long now!

:( Boo! I completely forgot it was this week-end!
Maybe next one.
Glad you guys scored big!
Citronella flowers aren't little buggers, I am happy to note. I'd classify them as full size, at least that is what mine are.
Now for the Eryngium yuccifolium likeness, look at the obscured logo on your shirts in the first photo. Then, look here http://botany.cs.tamu.edu/FLORA/Apiaceae/AP0011.JPG
A very unique inflorescence.
(Or I could just have that diesease: prairie on the brain.)
One patch I have are small bloomed. From what I have read, the strain can vary in size and intensity of color. I'm interested to see how these do.
Well hi Iowa lilyites - good to see ya'.
Howdy Al! Coming to our Round Up on May 5?
Hey ya'll!!! Be sure & post some DG Cedar Rapids Round up pictures in May since I'm going to miss it again for yet another year for yet another famliy Wedding, have fun (I know you will) and eat - drink - trade & be merry! I'm glad I was able to see ya'll at the Flower & Garden Show.
Jill
Momof2D,
I wish I had know you were going; I forgot about it; I would have loved going with you!
Hey Arlene, darn! - I think it was halfway decent weather that day, all though Wanda said they ran into snow on their way into Des Moines. I bought a couple of lily's, a hot poker plant & a shade plant (Lenten Rose). But - hey, now that the weather is decent we can get together at some point - there are still a couple of places I wanted to take you to in or around Des Moines. The Flower & Garden show was nice but as always .... too many Hot Tubs! There wasn't much I could afford to buy but the lily's were very afforable!
I am going to try starting a lasagna bed on the south side of my property, I want to make it a sort of "courtyard" type of deal. I will have to look for shade plants for it after its done but I dont think it will be done untill next spring. The neighbors are going to think I'm nut's! Oh well - are'nt all gardeners a little nuts? LOL! I'll work on the outline of it this summer off & on.
Take care!

Jill,
Right now there is a lot of work outside uncovering all the perennials - layers of matted leaves!
And I have to be mindful that I'll be in CA for a week at Easter. Once back from there I'll be babysitting seedlings for the Iowa Round-Up. I'd like to make a trip to Des Moines to see you.
Maybe after the Round-Up. I'd come right now but there are too many leaves to clean up and too many seeds to start.
Yep doc, I've been working in the yard for the past couple of days - makes me realize I do have some leg muscles-sore one's! Weather's been great! Have a great time at the CR DG Round up! I'll be in O'me-ha helping my sis with my Nieces Wedding, I'll be lookng for some pics! Take care, Jill
My Trimphators and a couple of other lilies have broken ground. Quick! Go grab the Plantskydd!
Wanda does that stuff actually work?

Hey, is Plantskydd gonna be making an appearance at the Round Up? We can't get it around here.
It can be purchased from several websites http://froogle.google.com/froogle?hl=en&q=Plantskydd&btnG=Google+Search&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&um=1&sa=N&tab=wf
I'll have a good supply of Plantskydd at Roundup-reasonably priced
Ron
Ron--I didn't know you had it & just paid shipping on a big box. Darn.
Does it work? I had hundreds of tulips bloom last year that I had planted over the years & thought were DEAD.
The bunnies breed under a garden shed 5 foot from my fence line & have decimated my asters, phlox, coneflowers & LILIES in the past few years since we lost our English Setters. (Walker the Wonderdog has a hard time hunting them by himself.)
Last year I used Plantskydd 2 times on most of the plants & 3 times on the lilies. I had glorious perennial plants & lilies bloom all over the place. Lilies I missed were stripped or eaten to the ground.
What do you think?
Ron, count me in for some at the round up. I'd love to try it! I remember a "critter eating thread" from last year. Tried to fing the stuff locally, even though it said one place nearby carried it, but really they never had. Ron, can you save me some? I'm planning on attending the IARU. It really isn't so far after all , from good old Mad-Town.
Hmmm, I knew bunnies like my lilies and asters, I didn't know they like tulips and coneflowers, EEEK! With all of the money I spent on fencing I probably should try some Plantskydd. I know the mothballs don't work. Is it sprayed on or a powder?
Learn all about Plantskydd at www.plantskydd.com
It comes in either ready to apply liquid, or easy to mix powder forms. Remember...the sooner you apply, the less you need, and if allowed to dry for 24 hours, the one application is good for up to three months! (No more reapplication after every rain!)
Does it work? It has worked for me absolutely perfectly for the past three years. Will it work again this year? Who knows? All anyone has to go on is personal experience. I'll have plenty at the Roundup for anyone interested in it. I've gotcha down for some Magnolialover.
Ron
Oh please, Ron
Put me down for some too; I will try it at the garden at the Farm. I don't have trouble with the critters around the house but big time at the farm. Maybe I can keep them away from my green beans this year!
I know that the bunnies started munching tulips in one part of the garden .I sprayed & the leaves are now growing unmolested. I slip out each dry morning now to hit anything new popping up before the "bunny buffet " hits. An added advantage is that the Plantskydd is a natural fertilizer too!
Oh, I will be so excited to get my Plantskydd from Ron. Last year they mowed down my green beans at the farm. Should I also try to fence it in?
Maybe to keep the cats out?
Works on cats, too. Oh Kool!
No. I think Plantsydd would attract carnivores. It smells like blood when it is fresh & my dogs LOVE it.
Oh, phooey! is that a word?
