The seeds (nuts, I suppose) of these bushes are edible and supposedly taste rather like pistachios. Anyone have experience with them, seeds or plants? They seem to be zone 6 to 9, typically, and Forestfarm (forestfarm.com), a mail-order seller I trust greatly for offbeat plants, sells four species, including the American and the most common European. A quick search on line reveals no attempts at selection or hybridization to create varieties for serious nut production.
The name is from the odd inflated capsules that hold the seeds, not it seems from any medicinal use or a flavor less redolent of pistachio than of its first syllable...
Bladdernut? (various species of Staphylea)
