Neat link for Garden Centers!

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Received this in the Washington Gardener newsletter and thought I'd pass it along .

Locating Local Garden Centers

"Many area gardeners are only aware of a few garden centers and nurseries in their immediate neighborhood, but there are many more out there for you to explore.

About eight months ago, Mapmuse.com began a project -- the interactive mapping of garden centers and nurseries across the country. They initially researched and populated these maps ourselves, with the idea in mind that the public would subsequently add to, and enhance, the information provided. They mapped each garden center or nursery, and provided space for a written description, photo, and link to a web site.

Since this project was launched, gardening enthusiasts have made 100s of additions and enhancements to our maps. If you know of any garden centers or nurseries in your local community that are new or have closed in the last six months, please make those changes to the maps. Also, please feel free to add any places that are still missing.

The link to the Garden Centers and Nurseries Map is: http://find.mapmuse.com/re1/interest.php?brandID=GARDEN_CENTERS. They also have a searchable map and listing of local public gardens and arborerta to visit that gives a good basic listing for our region."

Pretty neat - the site even has the ability to bring up a map showing the actual location :)

rcn....I know this is stupid of me......however I am not sure I understand how to work that thing.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

levilyla, well I'm not sure what happened - it worked for me earlier this morning. All you had to do was click on the listings for garden centers and it would bring up a list of every state - from there you clicked on a state and cities would appear - click on the city and the names of garden centers would appear. Maybe their site is down? I'll keep checking and let you know.

Just tried again - seems I messed up the link by adding a period at the end of it. Try this: http://find.mapmuse.com/re1/interest.php?brandID=GARDEN_CENTERS

And here's the link for every state:

OK...I did it! You have to go to "interests" first and click on that and then click on the map and OH my all the garden centers I have not been aware of! Thanks for posting.

I'm going to use it when traveling to find new garden centers :)

If you know of any garden centers that aren't listed - be sure to add them!

Thanks for the link. I went ahead and submitted entries for the two Meadows Farms nurseries near me that were not listed. They seem to be missing quite a few nurseries around me an their website is not the greatest.

I wonder how much work it would be for Dave to implement something like this with The Garden Watchdog. It would be cool to see nurseries in the area and get reviews from other gardeners along with all the other details found in Garden Watchdog.

Brent, I agree, their site is not the greatest. But what a great idea for Dave to implement something like this! Like he doesn't have enough to do already! LOL Think maybe I'll at least pose the question - maybe something they could include in their future plans for DG?

Ok, suggestion made http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/672584/ Thanks, Brent!

Hi Debbie - I looked and didn't see it listed and don't have time at moment to list it, but Millmont Greenhouse and Nursery in Stuarts Draft VA is out of this world for beautiful plants. Have you ever been there?

It is funny that I used to visit there at least once a season before I really got in to gardening big time and didn't visit this year when I was going overboard. I will try to visit there next spring for sure.

Oh yeah, not sure if Millmont has a site or not.

Ruby, I just checked - it's not there! Seems like since this site is fairly new (8 mos) it will take some time before they get their information updated. I may take some time one of these days and add a few that I know of. Yes, have visited Milmont before - been a few years though :( They have a really nice operation there and their Poinsettia display this time of year is beautiful! Checked for a website - looks like they may have had one but link for www.milmont.com gives me an error message :( Did find this information though for anyone interested http://www.floriculture.vt.edu/vfga/Milmont_Greenhouse.pdf

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Two of my favorite local nurseries are missing, but here they are:

Watsons Garden Center on York Road in Lutherville, Maryland(will be having another 50% off sale the day after Christmas) You can't beat Watson's for variety-spectacular greenhouse)
Valley View Farms(has a great GH, too, but really rocks on the outdoor plant/tree selections) on York Road in Cockeysville, Maryland

If any of you are interested in beautiful Christmas tree ornaments and decorations, visit VVF now. They have the most spectacular selection of ornaments, including international ones. http://www.valleyviewfarms.com/

Watson's does not have a website that I know of...

GH

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

GH, be sure to go to the new feature on DG http://davesgarden.com/local/ and add these if they're not already there!

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks RCN! I actually did add Watson's a couple days ago. I will add VVF sometime later.
