This plant came up in my back yard in South Jersey. They grew in the late summer/early fall after a storm. The mulched oak and pine needles are the growth medium.
Mystery Plants in South Jersey
Monotropa uniflorum, Dutchman's Pipe, Indian Pipe, Ghost Plant
Lucky you, They grow in the woods and aren't easy to find. We call them Indian Pipes. It was always a surprise if we found them while taking hikes in the woods as a kid.
Indian Pipes, only seen them once in the wild That really made my day. Thanks for sharing!
yes lucky you...they are neat.
I wanted to see the Indian Pipes in person ever since I visited Emily Dickinsons home in Amherst and purchased a postcard showing a painting she had done of them. Thanks all for the photos, I really appreciated them. rcn48, a painting of them sounds wonderful.
