Mystery Plants in South Jersey

Estell Manor, NJ

This plant came up in my back yard in South Jersey. They grew in the late summer/early fall after a storm. The mulched oak and pine needles are the growth medium.

Lucky you, They grow in the woods and aren't easy to find. We call them Indian Pipes. It was always a surprise if we found them while taking hikes in the woods as a kid.

They are neat, lovely little things! Rick and I always have an annual "competition" to see who can spot them first! We have a nice painting that Rick's grandmother painted years ago hanging in our living room - it's my favorite :)

I wanted to see the Indian Pipes in person ever since I visited Emily Dickinsons home in Amherst and purchased a postcard showing a painting she had done of them. Thanks all for the photos, I really appreciated them. rcn48, a painting of them sounds wonderful.
