Confessions of a Lily Connoisseur

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Okay, it's confession time. Who placed more than 1 order from the same place? And what was the place?
2 for me...
3 orders from Buggy Crazy
2 orders from B & D Lilies
Anybody else nuts? Or is it just me?

Lindenhurst, NY

Wow, you have major lily addiction. I've kept myself somewhat under control and ordered 1 x from 4 different places :-)

I knew you went back to buggy crazy for a 2nd order, but you went back after that??
And tell me what you got from B & D? I got some nice oriental/asiactic crosses.

I was good and kept it under control LOL:-) I mean, WHERE in the HECK could I find room for more lilies???

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Oh Pard, they are so easily squeezed in here and there. Your "seed habit" it what has gotten you into trouble. LOL!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Well you are absolutely right about that! The other day I stuffed in 2 big gallon sized "plugs" of Citronella and these seedlings from an orange, spotted, specie type seedling. These will be my first seedlings from my own crosses that will be grown out. All of my seedling starts from this year are in gallon pots now to be transplanted out next fall.

OK you Lily Lovers - look what you've done - I was doing fine until I read this thread, and just had to go look at this site you talked about - Buggy Crazy - and then I was caught into the Buggy Crazy vortex - only to emerge with a HUGE lily order! WOW!! And it's all your fault!! Can hardly wait for them to get here - I'll have to get them into the ground quick! But just couldn't resist - thanks, by the way, for the info - Buggy Crazy is a great site - Dax

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Dax she sends them so fast too. Just wait until you see those bulbs. Oh yeah, I expect a follow-up :0) Let us know what you think.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

I did two orders with Buggycrazy... :) I'm avoiding the site now, or it will end up being three! LOL

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Oh Ticker, until you, I thought I was nuts. I ordered a third time because I love the Yellow Henryi types, and I had ordered two out of the three she had in the species column. I just couldn't resist... I'll blame pard, she had that great pic of henryi citrinum on a thread over the summer, and the rest is history. Pard, maybe you should get a cut in Buggy Crazy profits.
Yeah for Ticker!!!!!!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I don't think it counts if I ordered and then added to it, does it??

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Moby, I did that too (& no I didn't count that). If I added in that number you'd really think I was crazy. I got my third order from Buggy today and she gave me an extra surprise, a bonus "Mystery Henry". Sweet!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

That's great! I got a 'mystery asiatic' along with the new additions to my naughty garden, Tramp. :)

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL-- Well, you can never have too many lilies, and I can't wait to see everyone's pics next summer.

I guess I'm a wimp--I thought I was overdoing it with just three orders--buggycrazy, bloomaholics coop and the lily society...but I'm a newbie to lilies, so what do I know?!

Everybody--your lily gardens are beautiful though, and all of your pics last summer sucked me into the vortex, too!

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

I'm not going to look, I'm not going to look, I'm not going to look, I'm not! I have to get planted what I already have, then maybe. ;)

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Hey Moby, Tramp was one I didn't get! Imagine that! What I should have done was ask if she had a deal on one of each. I even got Pard's famous, "one bud" that was called White Bud. It was too beautiful to turn away..... One thing for sure, I am sooooo excited about the next lily season.
Tabasco, come into the vortex, you'll love it here ;0)
Ticker, ah come on, would it hurt to just look one last time? LOL! Plant, plant, plant......

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Nope. Not gonna do it. :)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Oh, what will power you have, Ticker. What's your secret? :0)

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Need to step back and evaluate to see what I might need next year. :) and there is always that Hosta addiction I have....

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

At least your lilies and your hostas aren't competing for the same spot. In addition to lilies, my other addiction is peonies. It's in the family blood, there was no getting around it :0)
Ah yes....next year.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

hmmmm, at last count I had over 60 peony bushes.... :) I've two new peony roots in the fridge next to the lilies. I need to move about 10 peony to the new bed where I'm putting the lilies... Yes, Peonies are another addiction... as are daylilies, iris, poppy, and so forth and so on.... :)

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Okay....iris are another favorite of mine. Again it was in the family genetics, I had no choice:0) On the subject of poppies, have you tried t B&D Lilies purple poppies? I got them as a birthday gift.
Diann, your gardens must be just beautiful!

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Thanks, My gardens are ok. For the most part I'm happy with them. But, they aren't any more beautiful than anyone else's on these forums. :) And a lot of the time they are way more weedier. :) I've seen a lot of gardens on here that just knock my socks off! This is what I like about Dave's and GardenWeb, you are never an island, there are always other folks around that you can learn from. I try to take advantage of that. :)

When you say purple poppies? Do you mean a lily called purple poppy or do they really have purple poppies?

Diann

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Purple poppies http://snowcreek.stores.yahoo.net/pop02.html

Lindenhurst, NY

I'm having so much fun reading this. And come to think of it, I added to my Buggy order 3 times:-) Thank goodness Lisa is so nice!!

OK, so let's talk peonies!! I love them too. I have about 20 of them, mostly un-named, but I did just get a Sarah Bernhardt and a Mons. Jules somethingorother. I love the pink peonies, doubles especially. I just planted about 6 peonies in a new bed. I hope I get some blooms come spring:-)

Peonies and lilies, how great are they!!

Maureen

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

I did two orders with Buggy. I got the first order and was so impressed I had to order more.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

You folks are keeping Lisa SOOOO busy with her shovel! Gotta love that vortex description-- the whirling, swirling suction.....

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Lisa has got a customer for life here. I'm even thinking of buying some greens from her for the festive holiday season. The greens from the northwest are so superior to the ones here. They seem to last forever.
Oh Ticker, you didn't know about the purple poppies? They look beautiful. Has anyone grown these yet?
The very last peony I ordered from Klehm's was Sunny Girl. They said they were sold out earlier this season (and I ordered in JUNE!) , but then they "found some more" a couple weeks ago. It's a yellow garden peony.
http://www.songsparrow.com/2006new/plantdetails.cfm?ID=1080&type=Peonies&pagetype=plantdetails
I am guilty of weeds here too. Your beautiful kept-up gardens inspire me. And your weedy ones too:0)
Buggy Crazy Rocks! (I do need to get some auger drill device to make these holes large enough. )

P.S. The swirling, whirling suction took me in years ago, and the velocity has increased greatly since joining DG.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Hmmmmmmm, might just have to breakdown and get some of those purple poppy seeds and winter sow them. :) Winter sowing is the only way I've ever gotten poppy seeds to germinate.

Moby and Mag's you guys are some of the best enablers around! :)

Magnolia, jump on over to the Peony forum and you can chat up a storm with the peony folks!! :) I need to go out and take inventory and I think that's what's going to happen tomorrow or later today. ;)

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Moby, the psychologists would have a field day with us, wouldn't they? enable, enable, enable.... :0) Wouldn't have it any other way. Don't forget, Pard.
I do get over to peonies now and then & irises. There's so much here.....

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Now that I'll have the room, I'd like to try those pretty poppies too.

Enabler?? I like to think of myself as a warm, supportive and encouraging friend. >:)

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

I think of you the same way, Moby, and Magnolia, and Pard, and Beaker, and Mainiac, and Wanda.... ;) LOL

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

How can you not share the love of lilies with those already affected with the vortex high velocity machine? How can we not share it with others, whom have not succumbed to such a fate :0)
Really you guys, you are great. The vortex wouldn't be the same without ya.
Okay now here's the confession..... I ordered greens from Buggy, making it my fourth order this season. Hooray for Buggy!!!!! Her season is now expanded to greenery. That NW greenery, oh I can smell it already!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I ordered greens from her last year and when I went to pick them up she just gave them to me. Even loaded them into my trunk. They weren't trimmed but so what. What a nice lady!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

If only I could pick up my greens from her, oh, and one of each lily. Pard, she is such a gem. I've never seen such impeccable customer service. anywhere.ever. Really, she has gone above and beyond for me. It seems like, in addition to her bulb size and quality, this is one of her trademarks. How does she do it? That and all that digging and clipping?? What a peach!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I think if you are a small farmer and you want to survive you HAVE to do it. And in their case, they have to have the customer base and if they want to keep that they have to have the customer service and product. And of course with the internet word really gets around quick whether it's good or bad, and people pay attention to it. And there is always that Garden Watchdog watching over it all LOL.

You know lilies aren't the only plants they sell. I have purchased callas, trilliums, frits, perennial statice (gemelli or something like that-- I love it!), daffys, various types of seeds, groundcover thymes and probably a few others that slip my mind. Their offerings do change with the seasons. I look forward to her bringing my order to my work this week-- not a special trip but she's coming into town anyway. It will be nice to see her again.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I bet it will, Pard, be nice to see your former neighbor. Idid buy something other than lily merchandise. I was entranced by this Rare Pink Camass. Wasn't familiar with that at all, not even the purple. Perhaps it won't survive out here in the great tundra, but I mulched it like crazy. Do you have that?
I think it's neat that you and Lisa trade seeds. You'll get a peek at the up and coming and she'll get a peek at Pard the Magnificent's up and coming crosses :0).
I hope Buggy's business is doing well. With all that said, she really deserves it for all the hard work. And I think I've done my part in helping out :0)

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

And we should all be going to the Garden Watchdog and praising her bulbs, and customer service! I'm heading there right now. ;)

Diann

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Ha, seems you guys already beat me to the Watchdog!! good for you!

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

She's hard to keep quiet about, don't you agree? I think I praised her the day I got the bulbs. Even after hearing about these bulbs, you really don't believe it until you see it.
